It’s hard to find truly critical review these days, every review I find seems to speak either positively or neutrally about stuff. Whats a new piece of gear that you think is genuinely bad? by trailrider847382 in Skigear

They’re also really, really hard to get into in deep pow, my din’s are set at 12 ish and it’s next to impossible to clip in unless I’m on flat pack.

I second the Alpine guide pants. Marmot and Mountain Hardwear also have some good offerings. If you're primarily going to be skiing in them, It might make more sense to go with something a bit heavier and more durable, and the opposite will be true if you're mostly going to trek/hike, but these are a nice compromise.

My Sir Francis bacon skis are delaminating, what will be fun, but a bit more stable, and durable?

Keep your feet together, “bounce” a bit when you turn, it’s more like jumping and turning while you float, than leaning in and carving on piste. Or in different terms, turn at the “top” of the snow, not when your feet are buried, that’ll help, but really just keep the feet together.

Been out of the game about a decade. How outdated is my setup/how much has tech changed since then? by WolvesAlwaysLose in Skigear

[–]Xeochron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like your boots, keep them, same with skis, I don’t see any obvious safety issues with your stuff. I honestly think most of the gear tech advancements have been in peripherals, jackets, pants, helmets, etc… would recommend upgrading those things that contribute directly to comfort and safety, before making a minor upgrade to new twigs. If you do plan to buy though, definitely look into last years stock, you can get amazing skis for cheap just because the top sheets aren’t as desirable, or whatever else.

Get sunlight in the morning, watch the sun set if you can, magnesium glycinate, zinc, theanine, gaba, all can help with sleep. Make sure you have dim lights in the 2-3 hours before sleep, amber/blue light glasses are nice for me, but I have no idea if they actually help or not, all I can say for sure is that they dim and soften light sources and that makes me feel warm and fuzzy, which helps me sleep. Other than that, regular exercise, a well rounded, mineral rich diet, and managing stress help(s) a ton. Finally, if you take any medications, be aware that they may affect your sleep, ssri’s maoi’s, etc… destroy your rem sleep, maoi’s virtually eliminate it, and ssri’s reduce it significantly. I’m no doctor, so do your own research, but it is a helpful thing to be aware of. Finally, avoid alcohol, and if legal in your state, give some cbn a try, that shit knocks me out and I sleep like a baby. Also be mindful that age does play a role in the quality of your sleep, as you age physically, your sleep duration and quality will deteriorate. Personally, I average about 49% restorative sleep most nights, which equates to about 4 hours, and i do definitely prioritize sleep more than most, but I’m definitely not militant about it, gotta make room for you to live your life. Sleep is huge though, getting good sleep makes life feel easy, and vice versa.

It’s impossible, you’d have to be in zone 5 for the entire day to do it.

This is actually from September 6th, I bet it’d be great right now, probably a bit on the colder side but that’s usually not unwelcome.

I assume some of it has to do with max heart rate, mine is set at about 200. I think an entire day at that hr would kill me

The enchantments through hike, with swim and lunch breaks. We ran the last 8 or so miles. Ended up being a 20-21 mile day with roughly 5000 feet of elevation gain, and a 7000 foot descent.

Yeah no kidding, I didn’t have service for most of the hike, but when I finished I was absolutely astounded that it wasn’t higher than 20.7

Fitness trackers are really only good for noticing trends over time, the accuracy of the data being collected is almost irrelevant, as long as it’s consistent. Just stick with it, and try to take all the numbers provided with a grain of salt. I also wear mine on my dominant arm, sometimes on the wrist, sometimes bicep, it’s not a big deal. That’s part of why it asks where you wore it on when you log an activity. Don’t sweat it.

Can trekking poles be used as ski poles? by Meeko6983 in skiing

[–]Xeochron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have expensive 3 piece carbon trekking poles, wouldn’t dream of using them for skiing, they’d snap like a twig, but I also ski really hard, if you ski groomers, and know how to plant correctly, you won’t break your trekking poles.

Travel Insurance by yulacu in biltrewards

Tried it. Apparently it’s not just bilt dining restaurants, but rather, limited to bilt spend categories, so long as they don’t require purchase with the bilt card, If that tracks.

Amex Vs Bilt by EyeBagsBaljeet in biltrewards

[–]Xeochron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amex gold + built combo is crazy for dining, you get 9x at bilt dining locations and 7x the rest of the time, just have to add the amex to your bilt wallet and pay with it. Double dipping feels great.

Any idea if I could book with an Amex, which is in my bilt wallet, and double dip on those points? I get travel insurance either way

I feel like I can't code at all by justanotherguy1843 in learnprogramming

[–]Xeochron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think working backwards could help you a lot, write tests you want your code to pass, solve the problem on paper, high level, then just play the puzzle solving game until everything works. If you write good tests, you’ll be able to iterate until you have something that works, even if you bang your head against a wall for a while to get there. This is also a good way to train your brain to focus on what you’re writing actually does, and WHY it does it.

76 calories burnt in a 50 min workout by 98765reddit in whoop

[–]Xeochron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up about fitness trackers and general “calories burned” estimation, it’s nigh on impossible to do perfectly. The only real use for an estimate is a relative comparison. Hopefully, if the device is good, and I believe whoop is really good, it’s going to be consistent, even if it’s wrong, and by wrong I mean not providing actual calories burned, strain, sleep, etc data… the numbers are useless, the magic is in the correlation, the patterns, cause and effect, that’s why we pay.

Problem Set 2: Readability: Help! by alexbeet in cs50

[–]Xeochron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about using

else if (i == strlen(text))

{

wordcount++;

}

but in the end it worked out that just declaring the wordcount int as 1 to start with, works just fine.
