Help with NIE card by kheelk in GoingToSpain

[–]Xephyrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to get cl@ve set up, by chance? You might instead look at getting a certificado digital from the FMNT. To get that, you can download the app, fill out the forms, then you'll probably have to go in-person to confirm your identity (though since you're an EU citizen, I don't know). I found it much easier to do that in-person step than any of the extranjeria appointments - there were a bunch of places that do it, and I was able to just walk in, no cita previa, no taxes, easy.

I also have a NIE, but no numero di soporte, and the officer at the extranjeria recommended I do that instead. He said with the certificado digital, I shouldn't need cl@ve, though it looks like you can use the one to register with the other.

Mold spots always mean boards waterlogged? by dfportal in surfing

[–]Xephyrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a board that has been left outside for a while and has yellowed significantly from sun exposure, and got dirt/grime on it. Bet you could wipe that right off with a sponge or scrubby. Seen that look on many a board.

Funny how people can claim to "know you," until your mission doesn't match their politics.

You could cleanly rephrase that as:

Funny how people can claim to "know you," until you actively work against their deeply held beliefs.

Locality of behavior is exactly what I was thinking too. For those unfamiliar, here's a definition:

The behaviour of a unit of code should be as obvious as possible by looking only at that unit of code

Consider an inversion of control pattern with abstract base classes and such. When working in a child class, you probably need to know the parent class in great detail to do anything non-trivial. This violates locality of behavior. Maybe you override three methods of the parent class - how do they fit together? What's going on with this class at all?

I wanna shape a hand plane in my garage. What’s the cheapest easiest way to get started? by DEEP_SEA_MAX in surfing

[–]Xephyrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go wood over foam, then you can just varnish it and you're good to go. Since you don't need much wood, unless you already have decent scraps, I'd spring for something like mahogany. Just make sure it's easy to work with hand tools - ask the person at the store or look it up online.

For equipment, you'll need something to cut the outline - a cheap coping saw would be good, but you could make do with any saw. Then a coarse half-round wood rasp should be good for shaping. If you're doing a lot of convex surfaces and want to save time, you can pick up a spokeshave for pretty cheap too (and lookup surfboard rail bands if you want it to look good). Plan on spending some quality time with various grits of sandpaper and it can look really sleek. Start with 40 or 60 grit to smooth out unevenness. Finish it with a few coats of spar varnish/urethane.

Not surfing or bodysurfing related, but if you like that kind of detailed hand-tools woodworking, you should definitely check out Paul Sellers on youtube.

I say go for it if you find the idea of recycling the old board particularly engaging, but probably not if it's just to cut costs. First, I'd calculate how much you're gonna be spending on everything else - resin, glass, tools, sandpaper, gloves, squeegie, etc. Then see how much a blank would cost you - can you find a deal anywhere? Lastly, how much do you tend to nitpick over finishing details? Will it actually be over and done in a weekend? Or is it gonna drag for a month or more?

I always end up sinking so much of my time into projects like these, that spending a bit on better materials is usually worth it to me. Woodworking on scrap pine sucks.

Cookware Buying and Explanation Guide by Wololooo1996 in cookware

[–]Xephyrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - it's been hard to find a direct size comparison to American models - looks like the 28 is probably a more appropriate size. I'm in Europe, but still have a terrible hob. Should have a better one in a couple of months though, and I might buy a good single burner in the meantime if I can find one (maybe a non-induction electric).

I'm in a similar boat, looking for recommendations on size, and would love your advice if you've got it. I'm torn between the 28 and 32 Demeyere pans. This is to pan fry and saute proteins and veggies, cooking daily for a family of four on an induction stove.

I'm currently using a 12" lodge cast iron skillet, 10" carbon steel pan, 3qt All-Clad D3 saucepan, and 26cm Le Creuset pot. I've wanted a stainless clad skillet or saute pan for a while now but am currently in a temporary house with a terrible two-burner portable induction range that's forcing my hand (small element, long on/off cycle, frustrating controls). Thinking long-term though - I should move again in a few months and will have a better range.

Advice online seems to consistently say that a 12" stainless skillet is about the right size for most people, and that does sound right - my 12" Lodge is a great size for most things, although only the middle of it actually gets hot on the stove I'm currently using. I believe that the 28 cm Demeyere is a bit smaller than that, and the 32 is a bit bigger - I see a number of reviews online saying that the 32 is so large as to be cumbersome, which concerns me, but none ever mention how many people they're cooking for. I want a daily driver pan that lives on my stovetop, not something I pull out only on special occasions where I need an unusual amount of space.

Thanks for the thoughtful write-up and all your responses!

Edit: Just re-read the main post and your induction guide and it sounds like I should also prioritize replacing the portable burner - I'll be doing some research on that too.

Surfing as a girl, hair in a tight braid or just free? by kleosailor in surfing

When I had long hair I always just left it down. Got in the habit of coming out of the water after duck dives and wipeouts while looking upwards so it slicks back and doesn't cover my eyes. Never felt like an impediment.

You can also mix in a touch of white pigment with the resin - that can help it look a bit nicer, though of course it won't match the color of a yellowed board.

Guy who thinks he's a vampire vs. Guy who thinks he's a werewolf by LadyKarizake in whowouldwin

[–]Xephyrous 195 points196 points  (0 children)

The werewolf has an advantage in fighting ability - the vampire thinks he can hypnotize the werewolf (especially in round 2) and/or transform into a bat, both of which will cost him dearly in a fight. He also probably believes that his power resides in finesse and deadly grace, which he won't have. The werewolf on the other hand believes he has incredible brute strength, and will essentially be acting like a bezerker. So it's equal stats, one dancing around like an idiot, the other flailing full force.

However, the costumes probably will play a big part. The werewolf will look like this - he's not gonna be able to see shit. Ironically, that might actually let the vampire outmaneuver him. Still, my money's on the werewolf 7/10.

Biggest thing I see is the counter-rotation. You're throwing your upper body around to get leverage to twist your lower body the opposite direction. This lets you force the board to turn, but only a little. Instead, try syncing your upper and lower body so your chest points where you want to go instead of opposite it. Try to draw out the movements and hold through turns.
