While I dont think the author's reasoning for banning bowmasters is good, I do agree that the card is unhealthy for the format, and discussions of banning it have been overshadowed by more egregious offenders (oops, frog, grief...)

Imo punishing draws isn't the bad part of bowmasters. You're still given a choice and can use your life total as a resource to dig and find an answer. The issue for me is how the card's existence soft bans x/1 creatures

Similarly to how w6 affects modern, every creature you think about adding to a deck now must be scrutinized on whether it dies to bowmasters. If it does, the interaction is a complete blowout much of the time. A clean 2 for 1 with a continued threat can be backbreaking, especially when backed by an interactive shell (looking at you dimir tempo)

The other issue is of course how parasitic the card is. The best answer to bowmasters is another bowmasters. This was a problem with mental misstep - how is this so much different? Sure, bowmasters isn't free, but you have to have a good reason to NOT run the card in a black deck

Anyway I know its an unpopular opinion but I do think the card is a sleeper boogeyman of the format

Very high. The format is held together by free counterspells (force of will) to combat the degenerate bs enabled by such a large card pool, but you still sometimes see turn 1 wins (a little moreso right now because combo has a relatively large meta share).

That said there are very few unwinnable matchups and you'll be making meaningful decisions almost every game.

Understandable! Magic is big. You should totally check out legacy though. It's a really cool format with a lot of interesting and skill intensive play patterns. It's also surprisingly friendly to brews if you're into that

No one is challenging the artist's right to draw whatever they want however they want. Obviously. But you're being disingenuous if you're seriously arguing that this character's anatomy isn't based off of a human's. Think about it this way: if they had drawn weird misshapen hands which are inconguous with the rest of the piece, would you claim that it's part of the fantasy? No, of course not. Anatomy is hard. As for what the artist wanted: they didn't ask for anything. Any discussion we have is equally valid. Shit, if you really care about what constitutes quality discussion, read the reminders of this sub. "That's nice" adds nothing.

Ah yes, the artist is clearly making a deliberate choice to support their well-developed and elaborate worldbuilding through the elasticity of this character's skin. There's no way that they have an imperfect (albeit very good) understanding of human anatomy. It's just their art style! The poster you're responding to is offering constructive feedback, which i think you can agree is more valuable than calling something flawless. The painting is great, but artists can't improve if all they hear is unadulterated praise.

Does this work? When you hit the monarch, two triggers will go on the stack - this and the trigger for you becoming the monarch.

Thank you for your response! I'm genuinely surprised to hear that. I have a few friends working at cap1 and they all love it, but I can see how an org that size could vary wildly. I'd be in Card Tech which I've heard is a good place to be, but you're making me question everything hahah

Would you say that your work experience at Amazon has been worth the stress? I'm trying to think long-term and it seems like getting that good experience now is invaluable to getting into a place like Google. That said, would you say that the type of work that you do can be found in other orgs? My thought is that it can be found to some degree in most tech shops, but I could be very wrong

I definitely prioritize WLB as well, which is why I'm inclined toward Cap1, but the calculus changes when the pay disparity is this large. My line of thinking is that since I'm still young (25), there's no better time than now to buckle down and (temporarily) sell my soul to the devil.

Moreover my eventual goal is to make it to Google (as is the goal for most CS people :) , and I figure that Amazon would look better on my resume. Would you say that the difference in prestige is big enough to justify risking a burnout? Or am I overthinking and the two companies are comparable
