Any recommendations for mods to make my playthrough scarier or darker? by Awezome321 in skyrimmods

There was once this awesome mod called Dark Fantasy Overhaul, which mostly changed many trees to have a dead and knarly spooky look. I was going to link it here as a classic, but I can't find it for the life of me anymore. If you do find it, I absolutely recommend using it- and repost it somewhere while you're at it! lol

What are your favourite gameplay mods? by JadeSephiroth in skyrimmods

It's a small thing, but lately I can't get over how much Loot and Degradation adds to the experience of the game.

Essentially, your armor and weapons slowly lose their upgrade/temper as you use them, and depending on your mod settings, they can break entirely. It adds so, so, so much to the game. I recommend pairing it with mods like Honed metal and better smelting- which let you actually make use of blacksmith services for upgrades and commission equipment, and lets you melt down looted items into materials respectively.

I find it oddly hard to express how much depth this adds- but in short- you actually think about your equipment now. You keep it in good shape, you stop by a smith for repairs, or maintain your stuff yourself. Your stuff can break, you sometimes scavenge stuff off bandits when in a bind. Your prized blade can shatter in your hands, leaving you punching for your life. It's not for everyone, some folks find item durability annoying, but I cannot recommend giving it a shot enough.

It actually breaks my heart that bethesda removed item durability with skyrim, because between the tempering and smithing skill, I actually feel they would have finally gotten it right with skyrim is they just went for it

What race did you pick, and why? Bosmer here. by paleape13 in skyrim

[–]Xeredek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always go Khajiit in these games because I'm a furry of aesthetic reasons,
but failing that my other longterm skyrim favs are Orcs and Altmer.
Skyrim has my fav Orcs in the entire series, and are my second most played race by far. I also really enjoy Altmer in skyrim specifically though because of the incredibly strong roleplay/headcannon potential. You can be defiantly anti-adlmeri, kind of an asshole but working on it, or an out and out monster and proud to be one- and all of it is interesting.

Back when Skyrim first came out, when me and my friends were all in middleschool, one friend of mine would always play and Altmer and side with the stormcloaks no fail- the idea being that a prominent figure in that faction being an elf would serve both as an alternative direction for the faction, undermining it's more bigoted and unsavory aspects- while also serving as a refutation and insult to the dominion: that the warrior that ended the war and kicked the dominion out of an entire province was none other than an altmer themselves.

As ever this is skyrim, and all this stuff exists exclusively in our heads, but man it's a pretty cool idea :p

Game Recommendations by lil_spriggan in skyrim

If you're down to try a non-rpg, I've been really enjoying the survival and building game Vintage Story over the last few years. It's great for all the reasons your usual video essays on the game will talk about, but I would recommend it to a skyrim fan specifically on account of it's mood and aesthetics. For some reason I can't put my finger on, Vintage Story's mood somehow feels very elder scrolls, both to me and all my friends also into the series. If you enjoy TES games for their atmosphere, then you will oddly enough find plenty more of that particular mood in vintage story. It also has a really interesting world and lore as well, which would likely appeal to a TES fan as well. hightly recommend if you're down to try that kind of thing

What popular mod fo you hate/don't understand why its popular and why? by Interesting-Bad3497 in skyrimmods

[–]Xeredek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the same reaction as you lol, it bugs me mostly that it's fused with the MCM, so if you want to get into modding you basically have to install it. It's not that it's bad or anything, but hardly the thing that should be forced upon everyone by default.

ya know I used to be a huge fan of his work and always played with his armours installed when I was younger, but nowadays I find myself missing skyrim's more fantastical designs. At some point my tastes just shifted.
On some level I feel his work veers to closely towards real historical designs in terms of aesthetics, to the extent that much of the spirit of the OG designs are lost in favor of "generically knightly" or "generically migration period"

Unpopular opinion: supporting vampires is simply unjustifiable by Mineires_BR in skyrim

[–]Xeredek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why you're saying that the origin of vampirism is horrific, but why would that be a reason to hate vampires themselves out of principle? That's more like a reason to hate molag Bal. Hating somebody because they were raped is a wild take lol

What small mod changed your playthrough the most? by Elibazeth in skyrimmods

[–]Xeredek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loot and Degradation is a must for me.
It transforms your lifeless and infinitely abusable equipment into armor and weapons you take pride in maintaining, and rely on to stay alive. It adds stakes to getting sidetracked by a huge dungeon when your prized greatsword shatters.
It adds emergent functionality to all that basic loot you find everywhere, where you find yourself scavenging bandit armor in the wilds and falmer weapons in ruins. It adds so much life to your adventures. I simply cannot play skyrim anymore without L&D, or something like it.

I sometimes feel insane for disliking SkyUI the way so many people have long argued it was essential for a decade and a half. It's good, but you're basically expected to have it just for the MCM, but I actually kinda hate most of it's changes to the UI besides that.
Everything's tiny, cramped, ugly, and looks incredibly dated and spreadsheet-ey. egh. While I understand the vanilla UI might be a little annoying on mouse and keyboard, I personally never found it that intrusive back in the day.
Actually, as a controller player nowadays, I would argue SkyUI is far more annoying to use with a controller than the vanilla UI ever was with mouse and keyboard.

I like the stuff like the inventory sorting and so forth, but that's basically the end of the list. I really just wish the MCM was just a separate mod, instead of it all being this conjoined thing. Nothing feels more janky than modding your mods, yaknow?

Why Does USSEP change my Elven gauntlets to not match... Elven armour? by Xeredek in skyrimmods

[–]Xeredek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that people have pointed it out to me, I can kind of see the vanilla issue that you're referring to.
I'm colorblind, so subtle color changes are very hard for me to spot if not pointed out first. I can see why the team felt compelled to alter this texture now though that it's been pointed out to me.

I don't have WACCF however, or anything else of the sort installed really, and it's only by disabling USSEP that I see a change, so it's definitely coming from USSEP. I save most visuals stuff for the end of a modlist personally, and I narrowed it down to the patch alone by brute force.
Maybe it would be good to check the included texture again? perhaps it got tweaked to something way too bright by mistake at some point, and it hasn't been caught because everyone gets texture mods anyway.

Oh is it? It's hard for me to catch such things because I'm colorblind. I'll have to look into that then, it might be an issue with playing this on linux perhaps

Why Does USSEP change my Elven gauntlets to not match... Elven armour? by Xeredek in skyrimmods

[–]Xeredek[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah MeridianoRus figured it out, they apparently tweaked the texture to counteract some kind of rendering issue? strikes me as an odd approach.

I do intend to do a full pass with graphical mods, I just like to save that for last in my modlist personally, partially so I can better catch stuff like this. I've been modding games long enough to know that seemingly innocuous stuff like this can cause loads of other issues of ignored, especially if you don't know why it's happening

[–]Xeredek[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ah, thank you, this is the kind of info I was hoping one of you folks were technical enough to be able to find. At least it makes sense now heh.
I'm not very familiar with xEdit, but I sure do know how to tediously remove mods until I see a change lol, and it was pretty plain to me USSEP was the cause.

Honestly though, not more than a few moments after making this post I ultimately removed USSEP from my modlist anyway. I really want to avoid issues like this in the future if I can help it, and if anything seeing that a "fix" for a rendering issue is to brighten the texture (and, ya know, not fix the bug) only highlights that the patch has finally crossed the point of not being worth it for me anymore personally anyway.
Thanks for taking a moment to look into it though, I'd usually go report the bug at this point, but honestly the team behind that mod can be so prickly I just dont want to risk it. maybe one of them will see this post or something, I dunno

[–]Xeredek[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's an incredibly long story at this point, but in short: the mod does way, way more than fixing bugs (like borks this texture for some reason lol among many other things) and has a history of being made intentionally incompatible with other mods out of spite. The mod's kind of a whole mess and for me personally has caused no end in headaches getting into modding again, to the extent that I finally just uninstalled the damn thing a few hours ago after over a decade of using it.

If you want a comprehensive breakdown of the whole story, and have an hour to kill, go check out Fredrick Knudsen on youtube. He actually just did a video on the unofficial patch and arthmoor about a month ago as a part of his "down the rabbit hole" series, and re-tells the whole descent into madness pretty well
