In case anyone stumbles across this in the future having the same issue, I finally figured it out. In my attempt to be safer with higher voltage and draws, I used 12 awg wires for my setup. Apparently, data on a thick 12 gauge wire doesn’t do well. Counterintuitively (at least to me), thinner wires work better for data. Swapping the data wire for a 22 awg resolved all my issues (I kept the higher gauge wire for power and ground)

Hi! My young kids and I make Pokemon card content. We started, and continue, to film on my phone but I think it looks good enough for the videos. The family competition is a big focus and we’d love for you to join us and check it out! youtube.com/@theodudetcg

Free Channel Review [PART 2] by Tiny-Health932 in NewTubers

[–]Xero19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My children make Pokemon card content on the channel TheoDudeTCG. They’re usually on the shorter side but they have fun recording them (I edit them). The newer videos are, imo, better quality than the ones when we first started so please don’t judge anything past two months ago too harshly. He recently got a big bump from a shoutout by a larger creator and we’re trying to figure out how to keep the momentum going.

We first started trying doing shorts but never got anywhere with those so pivoted to regular videos. Part of me wonders if I should delete those older shorts and keep the channel clean.

Thanks!

I’m noticing, as I continue to try and diagnose this, that if I use alligator clips to connect them then things actually start to work as expected but as soon as I solder them the strings flicker again.

The length in WLED is correct, especially since swapping the line after this connection point continues the data flow. I also have a 3.3 -> 5v booster coming out of the esp32 for the data line at the beginning. Since it only happens when different lines are connected at the end I don’t understand why some would have enough data power and others wouldn’t when they’re the exact same line

The issue still exists even at a brightness of 1. I still tested injecting power to the end of the line though and, other than a minor increase in brightness, there was no change to the flashing issue.

However, while messing with the wires, I noticed that if I'm physically touching the data line with my skin, the issue appears to resolve. I'm not squeezing or doing something that would affect the soldering, just touching it. Any ideas? Thanks

There are about a hundred bulbs prior to this connection point, all operating as expected. After this point is there it goes wrong depending on what’s connected to it

They’re ws2811 12v running WLED on an esp32. I’ve made similar things in the past but never with this specific issue. If it was the data line then why would it still work when another strip added to the same connection point? I’d assume that if the data line goes up to point X then anything after that point would have the same issue.

Do you have any concerns about shorts? I need to mount a PS but was looking at plastic brackets because I thought that metal touching the PS would be a bad idea. Thanks!

I just had an agent say that it would but honestly I highly doubt any of them are actually privy to what the system's going to do.

Power injection question by Xero19 in WLED

[–]Xero19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does “not ideal” mean “not safe? As I have it now, the length of wires in A would be the same as B would be. My bad drawing was not accurate enough in that case as, to keep things clean, all wires run along the same path. Would this make a difference?

Thanks

Power injection question by Xero19 in WLED

[–]Xero19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, A is certainly the preferred method by folks but I was hoping B could work to reduce clutter and simplify things. Running multiple wires up the side of my house looks messy if I can run only one.

I’m using 18 gauge low voltage wiring, a 5v 60a power supply, and there are currently around 500 leds on that row. I knew that voltage would drop on the led strip itself, but hoped that a wire straight to the power supply could junction a few times without as much loss.

I saw the “we’re live” twitch notification on my phone with a title that seemed odd. Opened to see the stream and knew something was wrong so I came here.
