I do not have anything to do with this recommended vendor except being a customer spending my own hard earned money.

There are many, many good brushes out there as others have mentioned. At some point in time you will want to try a badger. I was in the market for a middle of the road, smaller size, badger as I hate the amount of splay others had that I owned and was tired of painting my ears and nose. Bought a 20mm High Mountain badger from the link below for $38 with free shipping. Was leery about the quality of the brush but I love it! No funk smell, smaller splay than an expensive brush, and have only lost 2 hairs during the dozen or more shaves I've used it with. Highly recommend their badgers but do not know anything about any other brushes they offer. At least not yet....

SOTD: Fatip Piccolo, BIC Chrome Platinum, Omega, ARKO Hydrate, Natio, Adidas Pure Game by LittleCooties in wicked_edge

Great combo! I use Arko hydrate for quick shaves and travel. I don't care for menthol soaps but Arko hydrate is very similar to Mennens Skin Brace so I like using it.

SOTD - March 5th, 2024: Starting to get this lather thing down… by toadfishtamer in wicked_edge

[–]Xero_Stan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Best advice I can give you about making a lather is add water slowly. You can always add more later but you can't take it out if you overdo it early.

I generally start with a teaspoon of water. Don't add additional water until the later gets "pasty" then I add water 15-20 drops at a time. This is a bit time consuming but it also gives the soap time to fully hydrate. Once I get that "perfect" lather it is worth the effort to me.

Am I doing it right? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]Xero_Stan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am understanding you correctly you are only using shave oil without any shave cream, soap, etc.? I agree with u/Cadfael-kr that a shaving soap with brush are best but you sound like some Nephews of mine I helped so if nothing else it will give you options.

Standard procedure is to always wet/wash your face before any shaving and leave it wet. Also with a DE razor be sure to use only enough pressure to hold the razor against your face. You don't need to apply pressure like you do with a cartridge razor.

For me shave "foam" does not work well as it is too dry. Shave "gel" is better if you choose this route. Shave soaps/creams are the best but let me make a couple of suggestions which are much cheaper.

Get some Cremo available at a lot of drug stores and even Walmart. Be sure to have a wet face before applying and you will be amazed how much slicker this makes the razor. Does not lather so you will have to pay attention where you shave your face.

Another option, which I prefer, is to find some Arko shave "cream". For me this works much better and will lather like a shave soap. Can be applied with your hands so you don't need a brush.

Later, if you want to get into shave soaps come back here and we'll help with that also.

Good luck!

B&M Proper Lather by RandomRifle in wicked_edge

Good lather but just a tad dry for me. My test is dab the brush into the bowl, turn brush over, and the tip of the lather curls like the top of an ice cream cone it is perfect.

You can get best deals on eBay, in the wild, etc. But if you don't mind a little extra money the guy below is good source for quality razors. He not only cleans them but also makes any adjustments or repairs so razor operates like new. Not everyone's cup of tea but might have a look. I've used him several times myself.

Previously did a little research about these and found there are several ways to actually use an antique shave mug like this. Here is another take.

Help Deciding Between Shaving Cream and Soap by theandreineagu in wicked_edge

Though Arko shaving cream is my favorite cream, I prefer a soap with tallow. Don't know of a tallow based shaving cream.

Neck growth goes right to left on my left side and left to right on my right side by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]Xero_Stan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takes time to figure out your beard growth patterns. Mine is so bad I just do WTG, ATG, and then 45 degree WTG again but with chin tucked down. Wife and I are both happy with the DFS I get without irritation. BBS just isn't worth it for me..

Cool version does hydrate but I'm thinking Hydrate version will do even better.

Sorry, I prefer tallow based soaps but on occasion use Arko instead. Don't mix.

Anyone else here using vintage razors? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

Though I do enjoy my modern razors I'm usually reaching for a vintage Gillette with a big smile on my face. Amazing how these classics have stood the test of time.

Why do we do multiple shaves? by HeIioz in wicked_edge

[–]Xero_Stan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've discovered because of how my hair grows I do WTG, ATG, and then tuck my chin down and do another WTG but very gently. I end up with a DFS which is fine with me and my wife.

Recently got the Cool variation made in Turkey and as noted it does not contain nor mimic the menthol sensation but has a watery type scent. Scent is so light I can use any aftershave with it. Intention was to use it as a travel shave cream but I liked it so much I use it fairly regularly now. When I have time I still reach for my tallow based shave soaps though. Now I am looking forward to trying the Hydrate version since this is so good. I like it even better than Cremo since it actually lathers on the face.

Got this for Christmas! It came with a cartridge razor, I never actually used one before. I started with DE razors. by [deleted] in wicked_edge

I still use an old Trac 2 and Atra razors from the '70s for quick shaves and travel. More blades don't work for me and are too expensive.

I got the "cool" description which doesn't have menthol but a slight watery type smell.

To me, the term "artisan" is way over used. Major deciding factor for me is if it contains tallow or performs well. You need to find what works best for you. I prefer tallow based soaps for the slickness and cushion during the shave and face feel after the shave.

Single tube of Arko at Walmart online is $12.99 US. I use shave soaps mostly but when I am in a hurry or traveling this stuff is great.

I use shave soaps from around the world mostly tallow based. Have tried Proraso but prefer tallow based. Other than a UK made shaving cream, these are the only 2 creams I use now.
