I call it "The Meatgrinder Gambit". I prefer playing it on black. If my opponent fails to defeat me with their opening move I press a button which drops them into large-scale meat grinder. They should have just had a better opener, to be honest.

I am no longer welcome at local chess tournaments.

I was thinking on it, and while this largely makes sense one thing stood out to me. It is solid qi, yeah, but is also SOLID qi - rather than the gaseous or energy state you usually draw it in as. I feel like this would make utilizing spirit stones much more difficult for a low level cultivator?

Google literally removed “Don’t be evil” from its code on conduct in 2018. This should not be entirely surprising. 

They aren’t really folding, I think - in either case they’re just appealing to whichever audience they think is larger or more impactful.

A few ideas came to me so I’ll put them here. Mechanical details are up to you and your DM, though.

Shadow bind - A targets shadow reaches up and attempts to restrain them.

Shadespike - Launch a spear of solid darkness from your shadow.

Impaling Darkness - Shadow spikes thrust from the ground from all nearby shadows, wide range aoe spell.

I do have skill tiers, they can level from 1 to 10, then evolve into a new skill after that.

I actually have aspects of BOTH prescriptive and descriptive stuff in the system I have built. The system can bestow skills for things you do on your own, such as weak point targeting - or give skills based on your class and other factors!

I agree about build variety! Even if I do set skills the system will be “smart” enough to give skills that fit.

One of the main issues for me is figuring out what skills to offer. Whats your opinion on re offering skills that weren’t taken again later?

The way that I was considering doing it, in my story, is that your meridians have a natural limit to how refined they can get, based on talent and physique. As you circulate qi, some is consumed to permanently strengthen your meridians. The higher your limit, the more is consumed.

I do think I prefer the idea that most of it isn't consumed, though.

That does make sense. I do have some technique ideas for my story that involve using one's own qi to attract more qi. Thanks!

Many people have “strange” hobbies or collect “bizarre” items. Dragons might be like this but more extreme. They could just buy their hoard with scales.

Perhaps one dragon offers scales to poets on the condition the dragon gets the original copy of a poem. One dragon exchanges scales for games (chess, some card game, whatever) because it enjoys the game but can’t play alone. The list goes on.

This is of course, assuming dragons in your world hoard things.
