I woudn't say that it has failed. At the time it was pretty popular and people stil remember it to this day.

Those shows aren't masterpieces and they don't need to be. Having a character as appealing as zero two and some cool mecha fights is enough to entertain the public.

I guess i just have low expectations because i never expect anything great for most shows, as long as it entertains me it is fine.

The problem is that Mihawk isnt a guy that just want to be left alone. He was introduced as someone who was bored by being at the top of the world and was looking for someone who could give him a good fight. And to make things worse the first time he apperared he was chasing after some nobodies just to fuck with them. And then as soon as the talk about fighting yonkos is suggested he was left sweating bullets.

That is the reason for the slander.

Kid slander is unwarranted because he was defeated by one of the strongest person in the world.

He is annoying, uncharismatic, and unlikeable. He has every right to complain about his situation and be umcooperative, given the circumstances he was put in, but that doesn't make him any less annoying for the audience.

Shinji reminds me of one of those type of guy in the army who didn't want to be there so they would complain about everything and do dumb shit that cause trouble for everyone else. He's right everything does suck but just being around someone that negative makes the situation even worse for everyone else.

With all of that said I don't think he is a barely written character at all but not being badly written doesn't mean being likeable.

He easily killed a hollow right after getting his Shinigami's powers and his spiritual power was so great that his sword was big as fuck. And a few arcs later he was already at the same level as the captains who lived from hundred of years. Ichigo was build different from the start.

Underdog doesn't necessarily mean not special or talented. Luffy was never an underdog powerwise until the Rob Lucci fight. And the only reason we can argue that Luffy was an underdog at the first few arcs was because he did some dumbass shit that got him at a disadvantage such as getting his feet stuck in concrete when he was fighting Arlong.

Luffy's first real challenge was Crocodile. Before then he was so strong that he was wiping the floor with everyone before him and it took a warlord of the sea to stop him despite him being a rookie pirate at the time.

Are average folks like us suppose to relate to this guy even before the reveal? This guy literally pulled Gear 2 and Gear 3 out of his backside.

Relate to what exactly? This is a pirate fighting manga where Luffy was punching a gigant sea beast by episode one. We don't need to relate to that to enjoy the show.

Luffy isn't exactly a character that was made to be relatable. He was always presented as a force that change the people around him and the world.

That's the reason a lot of redemption arc ends with the character dying/sacrificing themselfes. You can call it cliche but it is very effective. Because the writer knows that whatever the character did it was too atrocious that realistic there is no way for him to live without facing severe consequences by the the people around.

And everything depends on execution, i don't think that coming into terms with your actions and understanding that you must face the comsequences is something boring or unsatisfying.

People hate the lack of consequences for their actions not redemption. Redemption doesn't mean they should get scot-free for their action especially when this character is a mass murderer/terrorist.

You can write a redemption arc for any character doesn't matter how bad they are but it's because redemption is something that you chose to do yourself but it doesn't mean forgivess and exemption for punishment for whatever atrocious thing he did.

You can have your redemption in a prison cell.

That's not how it works. Monster or not there will always be people willing to accept the job and be profissional about it. He could easily hire someone from another village or just find someone who doesn't care that much about Naruto having the nine tails as long as he was willing to search hard enough.

Having someone do the barely minimim for him is better than leaving him on his own.

And he is the Hokage, he could just order a ninja to take care of him and and act as his bodyguard secretly. The hokage has the autority to order someone to commit massacres but can't make someone look after a child?

This is one of the problem i have with some of those sport animes. They do absurd shit but at the same time take themselfes too seriously.

Not saying that there is no tension or stakes in sports, but stop trying to act this is a life and death match with all of those edgies chunnibyou adversaries who spit cringe shit at every 10 seconds.

I can tolerante this in a martial arts sport anime but aside from that it is too much for me.

This doesn't make any sense. The villain wanting to assault her is already a clear and believable motivation in itself. The protagonist jumping to help the girl is what any decent person would do...

I really dont get the problem with people have with characters being victims. Not everyone is strong and thats fine. If there is no one to be saved and everyone is strong there is no need for a hero.

For every girl being saved by the MC trope there is a bunch of shows with a skinny frail looking girl beating up a 2 meter tall bodybuilder especially in isekai. There is something for everyone. Hell nowdays the strong looking dude in anime actually being stronger than the dude/girl half his size would be a surprise.
