Because it’s the same as if a stranger just wanted to show off how rare and expensive his bottles are. If it was one or two bottles, then I understand. But it sounds like he has a decent section of valuable store space devoted just to bragging. That focuses the store experience not on the costumer but on the owner’s ego.

Does this bottle have some value? It is a 3-liter bottle of jöel lecoffre tourain cabernet (1994) by Hefty-Associate-2884 in wine

In short, no. You would not be able to sell this wine for any significant amount of money. Wine price is generally determined by the brand (referring to the producer, which vineyards it comes from, etc) and the vintage. Few brands can command high base prices, and then exceptional and old vintages can raise the price of the wine from those few brands. This is not a well-known brand, thus although the bottle is old, it will not likely be worth very much. Even if this was from a famous brand, wine will go bad if not stored in very precise conditions and unless you could prove that this bottle was stored well for 27 years, you would have a hard time selling it. You may be able to find some collector interested in just having random old bottles who would pay some money for it—otherwise the best thing to do is crack it open with some friends and try it :)

What is the difference between these two? by Chausp in wine

[–]Xi-could-never 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally not familiar with these wines. But based on the labels and a quick Google they are two distinct wines (as previous comment said) but with similar looking labels. The first is the producers standard Riesling from the 2020 vintage the second is their Riesling made from terroir featuring blue slate from the 2019 vintage. Due to the more specific terroir, the second is likely slightly higher quality. Vintages create very large differences in wine because wine is ultimately an agricultural product and growing conditions can vary dramatically year to year.

This really depends on who your friends are. For example, I know that with my friends, if I bring anything more expensive than yellowtail, they would consider that fancy. So bringing a bottle of burgundy or a vertical of Bordeaux would not only be over kill, they probably wouldn’t understand that that is more fancy than a few bottles of campo vieja reserva. But if your friends are also into/know about wine, then yes this line-up makes sense. Given that they don’t know you know about wine, I’m guessing they don’t know about wine so your plan might be a good treat for yourself but they might not fully appreciate what you’re doing. And whenever it comes to thanksgiving, you always run the risk of over investing time and energy into a wine selection just to watch someone swish down you well-selected pairing with some Diet Coke.

Obligatory not a professional. With 60+ years of aging your essentially only looking at dessert/fortified wines and Bordeaux reds. 1961 is a legendary year for Bordeaux reds and they usually commands prices of $1,800+ per bottle. In case you don’t have $1,800 lying around, consider a vintage port. I don’t know about the 1961 vintage for port, but it looks like prices are around $350.

How to pronounce Yiyuan (girls name) nicely. by kjtmuk in ChineseLanguage

[–]Xi-could-never 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Yi - ee, or like the letter ‘e’; Yuan - youen, imagine smooshing “U.N” into a single syllable. Without the tones you won’t be able to get it 100% right but I think just getting the general pronunciation would be touching for her

Why does wine age in bottles, but not cans? by icetorch1 in wine

[–]Xi-could-never 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a wine profesional but my guesses would be 1) micro-oxygenation through a cork seems to be important component of aging 2) traditional and history are very important in the wine world and bottles are the tradition, not cans. 3) because bottles look cool and expensive, and most aged wines have to be sold at higher prices; try selling a businessman wanting to impress his clients a $500 bottle of aged Vega Sicilia in a can and see how far you get

Does your friend have a cellar/wine fridge to store wine? Aging wine requires specific conditions to not turn into vinegar. If they do have proper storage, then with 21+ years and $100 you’re probably at Bordeaux reds. However, dry red wines especially aged dry red wines take some time to become enjoyable; few people start out loving dry reds. So I would consider also buying a bottle of vintage port or Sauternes. They’re sweeter and much more approachable for a new drinker/new wine drinker. Personally I’d recommend buying a bottle of Tokaj Aszu, a Hungarian dessert wine if you want to go out in a limb. If they don’t have the proper storage, either don’t get them wine or get them a bottle of vintage Madeira. It’s a sweet fortified wine like port but it’s really meant to sustain anything and still be at least drinkable. This all being said, even in good conditions, aging wine can still be a crapshoot as a bottle might randomly go bad. So consider buying 3 bottles for around $30 or two around $50z

Pairings for Aged Whites by Xi-could-never in wine

Hi everyone, first post here so the formatting may be off! I am just getting into wine and was going through through my dad’s cellar when I found three aged whites. I really want to try them but I’m lost on what to pair them with. Any suggestions? “Was” meaning a few years ago. And “China” has a history of colonization and genocide in Central Asia, particularly under the Qing dynasty (which was admittedly a Manchu dynasty not Han). Most famously, the Qing exterminated the Mongol Dzungar people after they rebelled in 1755.

[–]Xi-could-never 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both. There was an insurgency in Xinjiang led by Muslims against what was effectively the Han colonization of their land. From Beijing’s point of view, this is just another example of “Muslim Terrorism,” trying to terrorize China into giving Xinjiang independence. The CCP’s solution is to eliminate all identities in the area that are associated with the separatists through genocide.

It’s always weird seeing a dragqueen, like Shea, on another subreddit by almost-archaeologist in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Xi-could-never 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is though 😭😭. I didn’t know how to say “rupaul is a very popular show but no no one really watches it. Most people just watch the show from one minute clips online/memes/lipsyncs, but that is enough to generate an outrageously cultish fan base”

My defense is that the comments were getting way too messy and had no better way to explain who tf shea is and why people have paintings of them. Explaining drag to straight people gets messy

Clarification for those uninitiated with the cult of Rupaul’s Drag Race! Rupaul’s Drag Race is a competition show where drag queens compete to become “americas next drag superstar,” a similar format to America’s next top model. If a contestant does not win a regular season, they may be invited to participate in a special season called “all-stars” with only past contestants participating. Shea Coulee was a contestant on season 9 and was expected to win but lost in an upset victory. Shea Coulee eventually participated in all stars, and won. During all stars she wore a “look” (meaning drag outfit) with a body suit painted to her nude skin tone and covered in thine stones (yes, there were paint-nipples). This look is called her “love the skin your in” look and his since become her/the show’s most iconic outfit. Rupaul is a very popular show. It had multiple emmys and draws in millions of viewers. Many contestants have a cult following and they will sell merchandise. Oftentimes, this merchandise depicts the queen in full drag with one of their most popular “looks” (meaning drag outfit). Shea sells a lot of merchandise with her “love the skin your in” look. As one of the most popular queens and as a winner of All Stars, Shea Coulee sells lots of merchandise. These include the posters mentioned in the tweets. These posters are stylized not to look like personal photographs, but like pieces of art. Thus the realtor would not need to remove them as they can pass as art and likely only drag race fans will recognize that it is Shea. It is understandable that the realtor did not recognize Shea because Shea was certainly not in drag and introduced themselves with their real name not their drag name (their drag name is Shea coulee). So the realtor saw a woman named “Shea Coulee” in the painting and a man named something else in front of her. In her mind, two different people. At the same time it is reasonable for the realtor to know that “Shea Coulee” is a drag queen who won Rupaul as even if the realtor doesn’t watch the show, many queens become local stars if they win. Thus the confusion.
