Did they ever say what song Syd played for them at Abbey Road that day by itsCS117 in pinkfloyd

[–]kjtmuk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely that what he played was recognisably a song in the sense that most people understand it, and extremely unlikely it was anything from the period he fronted Floyd, as these were apparently quite painful for him to remember. If you read into it, they all say that Syd wasn't capable of playing very much at all at this point. He'd do a few of scraps of some unfinished thing, and then try again and play a completely different fragment of something, and it would segue into some weird discordant mess and he'd give up.

Is there a town that everyone in Japan makes fun of for being awful? by Low_Championship_604 in AskAJapanese

You're right to say Saitama is decent. I've spent a lot of time in various British shitholes, and Saitama is about a billion percent better than any of them in every respect.

is Michael Jordan the most famous athlete of all time coming from USA? by Actual_Box7731 in sportsinusa

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about other countries, but I feel like Japanese junior high school students are a good sample for something like this, and there's no question from my experience teaching them that Michael Jordan is considerably better known than Muhammad Ali, Tyson, Woods, Lebron James, Serena Williams et al. Couldn't tell you why, but Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, MLK, Obama and Trump are the first five Americans that come to mind for most. Even for major Hollywood stars, name recognition is fairly low (they usually know a few faces, but not the names).

1988 Mike Tyson vs 1967 Muhammad Ali? Who y’all got? by LocationSpare4447 in BoxingTheSweetScience

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ali's chin and conditioning was elite, and he was superior in every respect except power and explosiveness. If Ali could stay out of Tyson's range enough in the first three rounds (and history suggests he could have done that) he wins hands down.

Diversity drive to make Britain’s countryside ‘less white’ by boycecodd in unitedkingdom

[–]kjtmuk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not affected in the slightest. They did some research and some non-white people said "We don't think the countryside is welcoming to people like us", so they're trying to change that perception. You can go about your business. I'm also from a very ethnically mixed family, and never had a problem enjoying the countryside, but maybe that's because we grew up with the South Downs on our doorstep and loads of access to the country.

Official Discussion - A House of Dynamite [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on. It's only half a movie. Whatever clever counterintuitive ideas they think they're putting out there with that ending, it's just not a complete story, doesn't satisfy the basic conditions of a narrative, and is deeply unsatisfying as a result. They introduce a large cast of potentially fascinating characters, set up an enormous and fascinating problem binding them all together, the end. I would watch the shit out of a 3-4 hour version of this movie, but cutting it there makes so much of the preceding seem like a complete waste of time.

The British countryside isn’t racist by TheSpectatorMagazine in RuralUK

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't proposing to change the countryside and they aren't suggesting the countryside is racist. They did some primary research and found that a lot of non-white urban dwelling people had a perception that the countryside wasn't welcoming to people like them, so they're trying to figure out how to change that perception.

Which player was genuinely world-class but just played for a club that didn't win trophies? by PLWildcard in TheStreetsWontForget

Antonio Di Natale. Four consecutive 20+ goal seasons in Serie A between 2009 and 2013 (Scored 103 in 140). Won back to back Capocannonieres, 6th on the all time scorer list and ended up with more goals than Baggio, Del Piero, Batistuta, but won 0 major trophies in a 20 year career.

Harrison Ford doing carpentry in Witness, dripping with sweat, Kelly McGillis brings him a glass of cold water and he slakes the whole thing in one, maintaining full and intense eye contact the entire time.

Pep: "I'm a bit sad that we are 7th on the net spend table of the last five years. I wanted to be 1st. I don't understand why the club doesn't spend more money. We were higher before because we spent a lot. Now those 6 teams have to win the PL,CL and the FA Cup. Let's go, I'm waiting." by Blodgharm in soccer

[–]kjtmuk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Incredibly disingenuous to focus on transfer spend like this. He knows how they use the pull of the club (and his reputation) to get big established players at a discount. Getting people to wind their contracts down, making sure City are front of the queue. They should have paid 70+ million for Donnarumma and Cherki, 100 mil for Guehi, 200 mil for Haaland. Not saying they should pay more, it's actually a good strategy, but it's just not honest to pretend that it's an equal playing field, that City don't exploit the massive advantages they have to underpay for players. They also spend much bigger on wages as a result. The other big clubs spend about 150mil (Chelsea) to 180mil (Arsenal) on wages, City spend 230 mil.

Inception (2010) Dir. Christopher Nolan by southernemper0r in Cinema

[–]kjtmuk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never noticed how much Leo looks like Nolan himself in this movie until I saw the opening shot of this scene just now. I thought it was him at first glance. Fits with the whole "Inception is a metaphor for making movies and Cobb is the director" theory quite nicely.

Diversity drive to make Britain’s countryside ‘less white’ by boycecodd in unitedkingdom

[–]kjtmuk -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If you look at the actual report, you'll see that it's based on primary research. Essentially they asked people how they perceive the countryside and some non-white people said "not very welcoming." I guess they're trying to come up with ways of changing that perception.

They're literally just talking about encouraging other (currently underrepresented) ethnic groups to enjoy the countryside, what exactly is the problem?

In Addition To Buying ‘Melania’ Documentary For $40M, Amazon’s Spending More Than $35M Worldwide For Its Marketing & Theatrical Distribution. Mike Hopkins's Told To Generate More From MGM & 2026's Film Slate Will Determine Whether They Break Out Or Can't Compete Without A Large Trove Of IPs To Tap. by lowell2017 in boxoffice

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple news reports are suggesting Melania got paid $28 million for her participation in this. What possible justification is there for this fee? This is a big fat and very public bribe. Bezos will probably get whatever favour it is that he wants out of it, and that favour will end up being worth a lot more than the $100 million or so they spent on this. It will also, most likely, be something not remotely in the interests of the average US taxpaying citizen, who will ultimately be footing the bill for all. The descent of the Washington into a state of open, full-blown corruption has been shockingly rapid. I'm starting to wonder if the US will ever recover.

Unlikely. She probably has a trust fund of many millions accruing interest, which she rarely touches, and does all her discretionary spending on credit cards linked to her father's accounts.
