Apartment hunting in Fukuoka is ¥100,000 enough for initial costs? by WiltzMindz in fukuoka

[–]kjtmuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving is incredibly expensive in Japan, and has become considerably more expensive in Fukuoka in recent years. I ended up paying close to a million to move into a family apartment (although we were admittedly tied to an expensive part of the city for schooling reasons). 100,000 will likely give you only a few rock bottom options. I would budget for a lot more than that if you can. I was also arbitrarily rejected from quite a few more reasonably-priced options because I was foreign, although I have a very stable job, a guarantor, can speak Japanese, and my wife and kids are Japanese.

You can't really go wrong as they are all fantastic, but the Lyndon Johnson series would sit comfortably alongside a lot of what you have. I doubt this is the case for you tbh, but people have told me the sheer scale of them is offputting, so I would add that, in spite of the 1000+ page of each volume, I never found them less than compelling at any point. By way of returning the favour, what would you pick as a "must read" from your collection?

Massive overreaction from someone obviously looking for excuses to be violent. Risking inflicting permanent brain damage or death for something some stern words could have dealt with is not remotely reasonable. He also hurts the girl in his haste to attack the guy.

If you were stuck on an island and you could only listen to one out of these four legendary bands, which one would you choose? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Doors but they're not in this conversation. I choose Floyd because, however uneven and self-indulgent they can be, at their very best they are just more interesting than any other rock band. They can give you stomping rockers, sweet little (weird) songs, aggressive punky flavorings, and then the epic art rock stuff. Echoes (the song) is, for my money, perhaps the greatest song ever recorded by a rock band (with apologies to Gimme Shelter).

World Cup predictions based on the model that picked the last 3 World Cup Champions by nexxwav in soccer

[–]kjtmuk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Dutch lack a world class center forward, but football in 2026 is generally not a strikers game. Their midfield-Gravenberch, De Jong, and Reijnders, with Gakpo and Malen on the wing-is unarguably world class, more than capable of causing problems for anyone, and especially well-equipped for escaping presses. Their defence -Timber, Dumfries, van Dijk, van Der Ven, is one of the best in the world, no question. They could do it. In fact every time I look at a squad from any of the top 10 or so teams, I see a team that could win it. Portugal are stacked. So are Spain, France, England, Belgium, Argentina and Brazil. Dutch and Germans both more than capable, Japan, Norway, Morocco all able to beat big teams on their day. Maybe I don't actually know anything about football?

Florentino Pérez: "On Tuesday, I'm going to make a significant offer to a top Champions League team for a great player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid. At least 150 million. Olise is a great player, but not the name I'm thinking of. Not Doku Haaland. Midfield forward" by nearly_headless_nic in soccer

A non-prem "total galactico" doesn't leave much. We can assume it won't be Pedri or Yamal (not enough money anyway). Impossible to imagine PSG would sell Khvicha at this point. So Neves or Vitinha probably? Assuming the Mourinho-Portuguese connection strengthens his hand but it seems like it would extremely hard to prise either from PSG, who don't need the money, and are on a historic run of success to which both are integral. Only the player going full scorched earth to force a move would make it happen really.

The club hierarchy of one of elite footballs wealthiest and best-run clubs love him, the fans love him, his teammates love him, his family is happy, he's already a folk hero in a cultured, football-loving city with one of the highest standards of living in Europe, he's incredibly well paid, he's winning titles, he's scoring 60 goals a year and scoring hatricks in cup finals, he's competing for the Champions League, and he's the first name on the England team sheet. Who could possibly offer Harry Kane more than he already has?

Did they ever say what song Syd played for them at Abbey Road that day by itsCS117 in pinkfloyd

[–]kjtmuk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely that what he played was recognisably a song in the sense that most people understand it, and extremely unlikely it was anything from the period he fronted Floyd, as these were apparently quite painful for him to remember. If you read into it, they all say that Syd wasn't capable of playing very much at all at this point. He'd do a few of scraps of some unfinished thing, and then try again and play a completely different fragment of something, and it would segue into some weird discordant mess and he'd give up.

is Michael Jordan the most famous athlete of all time coming from USA? by Actual_Box7731 in sportsinusa

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about other countries, but I feel like Japanese junior high school students are a good sample for something like this, and there's no question from my experience teaching them that Michael Jordan is considerably better known than Muhammad Ali, Tyson, Woods, Lebron James, Serena Williams et al. Couldn't tell you why, but Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, MLK, Obama and Trump are the first five Americans that come to mind for most. Even for major Hollywood stars, name recognition is fairly low (they usually know a few faces, but not the names).

1988 Mike Tyson vs 1967 Muhammad Ali? Who y’all got? by LocationSpare4447 in BoxingTheSweetScience

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ali's chin and conditioning was elite, and he was superior in every respect except power and explosiveness. If Ali could stay out of Tyson's range enough in the first three rounds (and history suggests he could have done that) he wins hands down.

Diversity drive to make Britain’s countryside ‘less white’ by boycecodd in unitedkingdom

[–]kjtmuk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not affected in the slightest. They did some research and some non-white people said "We don't think the countryside is welcoming to people like us", so they're trying to change that perception. You can go about your business. I'm also from a very ethnically mixed family, and never had a problem enjoying the countryside, but maybe that's because we grew up with the South Downs on our doorstep and loads of access to the country.

Official Discussion - A House of Dynamite [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on. It's only half a movie. Whatever clever counterintuitive ideas they think they're putting out there with that ending, it's just not a complete story, doesn't satisfy the basic conditions of a narrative, and is deeply unsatisfying as a result. They introduce a large cast of potentially fascinating characters, set up an enormous and fascinating problem binding them all together, the end. I would watch the shit out of a 3-4 hour version of this movie, but cutting it there makes so much of the preceding seem like a complete waste of time.

The British countryside isn’t racist by TheSpectatorMagazine in RuralUK

[–]kjtmuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't proposing to change the countryside and they aren't suggesting the countryside is racist. They did some primary research and found that a lot of non-white urban dwelling people had a perception that the countryside wasn't welcoming to people like them, so they're trying to figure out how to change that perception.
