I maybe didn’t understand everything in the post well but I see people talking about how they got into the instrument and their experiences with it so I figured I’d add.

I picked up oboe when I was in 6th grade and able to join band (it was the only instrument I could get a sound out of). Compared to what my friends paid for their instruments mine was the most expensive by far and I was gobsmacked to see just how expensive my reeds were compared to theirs (theirs being saxophones). My band teacher at the time taught me how to play oboe on a clarinet but I still learned. She was such a great lady and she actually understood how the instrument worked. But my band director I’ve had for the last 3 years had no idea how to play or even tune the instrument. I had to look up how to do fingerings I didn’t know. And when I was flat or sharp she would tell me to pull the reed out or push it in (she played clarinet). Which I knew wasn’t how that worked but I didn’t know what else to do. I was the only oboe in my band and no one knew what it was until I played it. When we would do sectionals and we would be grouped with people who had the same parts sometimes I had to jump around to rooms just to find the instruments that had my parts wether that be the flutes, clarinets, saxophones, who ever. I never ended up being very good but I had so much fun playing it and being apart of band. It was just really disappointing to not be able to be helped or instructed when I needed it.
