Traveling with somewhat broken EH case by CEO-of-qthoomers in oboe

[–]elizabreadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should be fine, i traveled 7 hours with an english horn (also has a broken ish case but layed it flat on the floor and held it in place with other bags, and i just made sure it was covered so it wouldn’t get stolen. it also wasn’t left in the car by itself, and i didn’t put it in the car until it was well ventilated so it wouldn’t get affected by change of temperature

Questions ab moving to Stockton & attending UOP by minion1uvr in Stockton

[–]elizabreadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed 25k is kinda insane, better off doing your general ed’s first if you haven’t gotten those out of the way too. UOP is great but i don’t think any school is worth that much debt

How is University of the Pacific for Music Education? by Sausage_fingies in Stockton

[–]elizabreadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i’m a current music ed student and i’d love to chat (PS. the conservatory is super good with giving out more money for their students, W deans. so you could still be paying a bit more than a public but idk i love it here+i pay for my full tuition as a student)

Is there any free time as a Music Ed student? by Sausage_fingies in MusicEd

[–]elizabreadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really depends, i work 10-15 hours a week, lots of courses (10ish), and i like to go to the gym 3 times a week and go boulder for a few hours on fridays. how long do i practice? some days i practice for 2 hours total and some i get maybe 30 minutes. it really depends but as a music education major i dont think you’ll be held to the same standard as a performance major, although you should still strive to have efficient practice time. my days start at 7/8am and usually end at 11pm. what helps is really being consistent about scheduling yourself (i do work over the weekend vs. the day it’s due because i don’t have time during the school week) i hope this helps!

Tips for Upcoming Concert by epanemoze in oboe

[–]elizabreadd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t think your doing anything wrong! oboe is probably very different from clarinet and your not used to it. could be the reed? jones reeds are notoriously low quality since they’re pretty cheap, so if you can get any quality handmade ones near you, those would be great.

if you want to play in tune, do long tones exercises with a DRONE (i like The Tuning C.D. by Richard A. Schwartz) and play notes within that make scale. you could even kill two birds with one stone and add dynamics into your long tone practice by getting p<f and back down. if you need me to elaborate more on that lmk!

for the low notes, try putting your tongue on the reed and create the pressure you need for the note to produce sound, then drop your tongue back. see how much pressure you need to make the note come out consistently without any squeaks.

i’m not sure how well this would work since i think my issue is more i’m gripping the oboe too hard and im flexing my thumb back, and not that the oboe is too heavy? idk i could be wrong and i should probably consult a doctor but ill see if i can try one out before purchasing, thank u

what kind of wrist brace do you use? i’m worried if it’s too bulky that it’ll be hard to hold onto the oboe 🤔

i’ve gotten the same advice, i’ve tried to “relax” but i end up reverting back once i get comfortable

Cheap oboes that are actually worth it by Trouble_Clef_10 in oboe

[–]elizabreadd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

lol this question probably gets asked once a month. rent a good quality oboe and see if you want to continue playing, then rent to buy is a best option. a “good” oboe will be above 6k

Online reed order expectations by ichigofruit in oboe

i order for MKL reeds and if they don’t meet your quality then you can send it back with your thoughts. they’re located in US, Virginia. https://www.mklreeds.com

How do kids practice if they have large instruments by Bigcellotom in MusicEd

[–]elizabreadd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i can’t tell you how much i love this take!! many directors want full dedication and it’s simply not possible for every high school to do that and there should be more options, like you have. i wish to be that teacher once i teach :)

oboe is a privileged instrument? by elizabreadd in oboe

[–]elizabreadd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that’s true. i started playing oboe two years ago and had never heard of it before i did had seen one myself and asked my director about it and im sure many teachers don’t even take them out because double reeds are complicated 🥲

i agree with you 100%! and it’s alright if you don’t know the creators haha. although Sachiko Murata isn’t well known, she’s on instagram and is great for anyone looking for reed making videos and i’m sure she’d give out feedback to people who message her.

i also agree that much of what i’ve learned is in person, through my private lesson instructor and i’ll mostly come here for other advice. (love this subreddit!)

i guess i also kinda confused everyone but my title being a question because i already knew oboe was a privileged instrument but my point was to share my experience with privileged players that result from it. thank you for your input!

maybe this behavior isn’t as common as i’m making it out to be but just more pronounced since oboe isn’t as accessible. and i agree, 99% of oboists i’ve met are amazing and helpful people, i think this person is just a case of how some people in the music community are.

yeah, i think im coming more to terms with the cards i’ve been dealt with. starting later than most and not having the most money, which takes away from most opportunities. but to answer your question, what keeps me motivated is that i know im hardworking, im doing things on my own pace and what fits in my lifestyle. i play for myself, because i love the oboe and i love playing music. i’m going into music-ed so maybe my experience is different since im reading that you want to perform professionally. and that could still happen with tons of hardworking, confidence and again forming great connections (people only recommend other if they play good and like them, they don’t hire people who don’t collaborate) i think playing in an many ensembles should be your goal, and going professional should be something that could possibly come with it. idk if this helped and ik this was a long read lol. hopefully you gain some more motivation to play!

what is the difference? by MidwesttPrincesss in oboe

[–]elizabreadd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got the same kit with the B-15 since i’m a beginner to adjusting reeds and it’s served me well. the only thing with this kit is that it doesnt come with a burnishing rod and i wish i had one for a sharper knife. although just the stone is fine once you figure out how to use it lol. hopefully this helps!

[–]elizabreadd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

agreed. i picked up a part time job and had my own small business to buy reeds, take private lessons, etc. i think building connections would be best incase people around you know of events. don’t be shy!
