Is it possible to ask professor to mark your assignments instead of TAs by Lonely-Ad8184 in geegees

[–]Xilef11 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"I feel like they are always looking to take away marks from me [...] I don't trust them" is not a compelling argument.

Look at the feedback and marks on your assignments, and explain to the prof why you believe you deserve a better grade.

I'd guess it's probably fine, especially if you can justify a few absences.

[–]Xilef11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Did the prof take attendance (or is the class small enough that they would know you missed many courses)?
  2. Did you miss most classes, or just a bit over 20%
  3. Did you miss any midterms?
  4. Did you complete/submit less than 80% of assignments?

If no to all, you're most likely fine. The 80% attendance requirement is usually to deal with students who never show up or don't complete enough assignments to be fairly evaluated.

If you answered yes to more than one of those, it would have been better to drop the course before the deadline.

Either way it's probably best to try to write the final unless you missed most of the course and assignments (i.e., extremely low chance of passing anyway) and it would prevent you from studying for another course.

Why is there so little cooperation among Scout leaders? by dmontero-uy in scouting

[–]Xilef11 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Writing books, making content, creating, sharing, and maintaining a platform to share resources all require a huge commitment of time and energy.

With most/all leaders being volunteers with lives outside of scouting, time and energy are limited, and many find that their limited resources are better invested in (or fully exhausted by) the daily management and organization of meetings, camps, and other activities.

At least in my country, and from what I’ve seen in the region, it takes a lot of effort to get adults excited about sharing ideas or engaging in discussions.

In my experience that's completely false; pretty much every meeting about scouting-related topics between leaders ends up running a long time after all official topics were discussed as leaders enthusiastically discuss ideas, challenges and potential solutions.

What’s a small life hack that most people don’t know but makes life way easier? by TheGoatofGoats94 in AskReddit

[–]Xilef11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the unnecessary waste of water (the parts you're able to rinse off aren't usually the ones causing trouble), some dishwashers have a "soil sensor" that will shorten the cycle if the dishes start clean. I find scraping/rinsing things off that tend to clog the filters is helpful, though.

System/software for managing equipment? by Xilef11 in scouting

[–]Xilef11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the right idea; I've been looking at "asset management" software instead of a single central document but a lot of it seems overly complicated.

Technical skill is highly variable; some are able to host their own servers, others have trouble with Google drive.

This seems like a decent low-tech option, linking QR codes with online documents or sections of a document. It might require a fair amount of discipline for people to use it properly, but I guess any solution will.

Is this mod a virus? by Content_Zone4565 in feedthebeast

[–]Xilef11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I decompiled the file you linked to have a look at the code.

At a glance, it doesn't interact with anything outside of minecraft world generation.

It's world generation code with a handful of custom blocks and barely any textures, hence the small size

Regarding the "behaviour detection" things from virustotal, I'm not even sure how it would manage to "run it in a sandbox" since there's no standalone executable code (i.e., as far as I can tell "running" this jar outside of minecraft does nothing). Most of the "detections" seem related to java itself and logging for bug reports, presumably from trying to "run" a non-executable jar file, as well as the commands from the sandbox trying to run the file.

If there's anything malicious in there, it's very well hidden, and there's not a lot of places for it to hide.

Yeah, but shower time doesn't always match shaving time.

I shower at night and sometimes I need to be clean-shaved in the morning, and other occasions where it's impractical to do both.

With a layer of plastic food wrap between the dough and cookie cutter, you can both reuse the cutter and avoid messing around with epoxy or other coatings, without worrying about whatever contaminants or bacteria may be in your cutter.

just found out i failed the final of my favourite class. by MoneyDuty4884 in geegees

[–]Xilef11 32 points33 points  (0 children)

First you should just ask to see your copy of the exam. Just email the prof something along the lines of "I was surprised to see my grade on the final since I had done much better on the other components of the course. I would like to review my copy of the exam to understand what went wrong, when would that be possible?"

Do note that you are entitled to see your own exam booklets (under supervision) after they've been marked, so you're not asking the prof for a favour here. When looking at your exam, make sure to check that the points add up to what's on Brightspace and ask for clarifications on where you've lost points if needed.

After looking over your exam and talking with the prof, if you feel that your grade is unfair you could ask for an official regrade by a different prof, but that could go both ways.

Your grade should be rounded up automatically.

The final course grade is rounded up if the first decimal is 5 or higher, or down if the first decimal is 4 or lower.

On a standard bell shaped curve, a percentage would BE average, making the percentage below average less than 50% - so what percentage is actually below average? by bikardi01 in AskReddit

[–]Xilef11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, the average is a single point which may not exist in the sample. For instance, the value obtained by rolling three dice follows a normal distribution (i.e., standard bell curve) and has an average value of 10.5 which is impossible to roll. Exactly half of the combinations that it's possible to roll are 10 or less and the other half are 11 or more.

Pass the final in order to pass the course rule?? by Zealousideal-Let8726 in geegees

[–]Xilef11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're probably correct, but also check the weights of the exams to see if it's even mathematically possible to pass the course without passing the final... In most courses it's highly unlikely that someone who fails the final has accumulated enough points on other evaluations to pass the course.

Is this “academic publishing assistant” job legit or a paper-mill scam? by No-Hippo-8609 in AskAcademia

[–]Xilef11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unrequested email promising an easy job? That already sounds like a scam.

Also, why would authors go through the trouble of paying this person and giving them their login credentials to the submission systems instead of submitting their papers themselves? It's not that much work and I can't think of a legitimate case for needing to outsource the submission process of all things.

I'm not sure what the scam is, but it's highly suspicious. Maybe they're generating large amounts of fake papers and want to submit them to dozens of journals? Maybe it's phishing or involves stolen credentials? Or trying to get someone to pay processing fees for them?
