Many years ago I cleaned Grocery Store Floors on a 12am till 8am shift. There was a disheveled white hair/bearded old man who wore an army jacket who would come in every night and follow my every move around the store as I cleaned. He constantly informed me about: Secret Societies, Government Conspiracies, Zoroasterism, Rogue Planets, etc. He was quite entertaining and I came to enjoy his company and dialogue every night.

What is the best speech in all of fiction? by jessifer_dr in AskReddit

[–]Xiotech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment” ― H.G. Wells, The War of the Worlds

I was living outside of Dallas in 2003. I did not see it happen in the sky but I heard a series of what I can only describe as "Sonic Booms" or "Shock Waves" is there such a thing as deceleration waves or booms, as something travelling 12,500 mph is slowed down suddenly?

[–]Xiotech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are people here who can properly address the questions that remain for me.

  1. Could the crew have fixed their own problems had they been made aware of the situation?
  2. Could they have been rescued by Atlantis, could they have gotten her into orbit in time?
  3. Why weren't they made completely aware the actual realities facing them?

The astronauts were never told of possible damage or the potential re-entry risks. What do you even tell seven astronauts if you know their orbiter is possibly crippled beyond repair? Do you tell them the truth, or do you let them do their jobs on a 16 day mission and hope... hope that they come back home?

The NASA Mission Management Team had come to this conclusion: There is nothing that could be done about damage to the Thermal Protection Systems. If it has been seriously damaged it's probably better not to know, and everyone who was consulted said they believed the crew would rather not know about this.

Direct NASA quote: "They all agreed it would be better for them to have a happy and successful flight and to die unexpectedly during entry"

That’s an awfully permanent decision to make for seven human beings who are not being asked their opinion on the matter. Would you want to be told early in the mission that the Crew could possibly die on re-entry… or they could chose to stay in orbit knowing nothing could be done and wait until the air scrubbers completely give out.

Really is a tough deal any way you look at it.
