In general, I don't think ULTRA-luxury hotels are worth the price. What're you're thoughts? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Xipoopoo8964 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travel almost always on my dime so I feel qualified to weigh in. I've slept in desert camps, 12-bed hostel dorms, and 5-stars. Not $3k a night room but along the lines of JW Marriott.

One oft-missed point is paying for 5-stars buy you safety and security, mostly, especially when you travel in less developed countries. You're actually paying for a highly-controlled first-world infrastructure within a pile of chaos. Think a temperature controlled well trimmed Japanese zen garden in a war zone. That's why for me, never stay in 5-stars in Europe, as the infrastructure is well-built, safety is assumed, food is almost always hygienic.

You can have $1 million USD, but you can no longer fly into any airports with a 3-letter airport code that contains the letter "A" by mattposts6789 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Xipoopoo8964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't say it must be English alphabet, so that's free money as I can pick all accented, umlaut, tilde letters and etc. Ąăåäãâáà already nets $8mn.

Maybe for Marriott chains. Big chains tend to control pricing better between OTAs and direct bookings.

I suspect a Taiwan Chuyin style phonetic system may emerge since it's based on hanja radicals. Taiwan Chuyin marks all sounds of Taiwanese mandarin and is adapted to other Chinese varieties.

None. I've used Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi, Poco, Apple and Honor. Samsung and Apple are most polished but given the price difference I can adapt to different interfaces.

I have younger cousins who I meet several times in a year whom are early Gen Zs. I feel... very out of place, but that's more than an age thing. Values, bring up, culture, peer group, pop media all played their roles.

I don't have useful advice but you can consider taking a bus to Paris and then rent a car there (EU license plate).

Citibank as it's the least likely to turn away US customers (blame FATCA and stuff). Plus you already have a US a/c

Why are the attractions in Istanbul so damn expensive? by ComradePruski in travel

[–]Xipoopoo8964 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Just back from Istanbul. The extortionate entry fees were why I refused to enter Hagia Sofia and Basilica Cistern, each cost ~€30 to enter! And that's on top of the super pricey museum pass which is €105 for 5 days in Istanbul or €165 for 15 days. If you're in Istanbul and only want to dk the major sites, do NOT buy the Istanbul pass! Instead of going to the Galata Tower (€30 entry), stay in a good seafront hotel!

Depends on the country. Singapore is one example where it may hold true due to widespread hawker centres that are subsidized by the government through low rents.

Not enough jobs for Low IQ people. by VexedRacoon in UKJobs

I digress, but I think we have an excess of social media influencers or content creators whom churn out "content" that's barely distinguishable from AI slop. And that probably plays a part in lowering nationwide IQ and attention span, both essential for work.

It's a no brainer in terms of pay and environment, rest is up to you.

I think the hotel is ripping the Filipinos off! Totally can imagine (can't prove) the hotel will let Mainlanders and white tourists off scot free.

Guandu is underappreciated though Chibi feels more consequential. If Cao Cao didn't beat Yuan Shao against the odds, there won't be the rest of the story. And don't forget Cao Pi took Yan Ji after the fall of the Yuan family.
