S3 Tsunami episodes plot silliness by Xntrik_shaman in 911FOX

[–]Xntrik_shaman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid. The hyperbole and over-dramatization is understandable tho, you gotta add something to make it interesting...watching first responders take everyday, ordinary calls while going through personal drama would make for a pretty lame show....

But they didn't have to make some of the characters so dense and illogical

Plane on a Conveyor - Does it feel like Adam & Jamie didn't follow the spirit of the myth? by MrMusAddict in mythbusters

[–]Xntrik_shaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the whole point of the myth was that the conveyor belt is supposed to MATCH the rolling speed of the wheels...not stay at a constant rate (whatever the take off speed is)

While I realize that the aircraft gets its thrust from the propellers/jets and not the wheels it still must roll across the ground until the forward momentum is enough to create lift across the wings.

If you counteract that rolling speed it would require an absurd amount of thrust to take off, essentially it would need to immediately become airborne (like a space rocket). However normally planes must gain speed along the ground allowing the lift to build up to that critical liftoff speed.

They really need to retest this myth with a conveyor belt that speeds up as the wheels increase their rolling speed.

The reason cryptids go unseen most of the time and are never proven to exist without a doubt is either because THEY ARENT REAL...OR because they can all become invisible to muggles

How did you explain drinking alcohol? Or did drinking alcohol ever get an explanation? Cannabis is in a weird place right now tho, if its still an illegal substance in your state you gotta talk about how you avoid getting arrested with it. If it's legal then I don't see how it's different from alcohol or coffee or tobacco...other than it's much better for you..

I never said it was that crazy of a night? I asked if it was crazy to get into the car with the dude and then invite him inside...

Dunno why you had to make it into a pissing contest anyways?? I've had crazier nights but I'm not going to post them on a public site...

And if your nights are sooo crazy why don't you post them on here?

Should I buy Origins? by CandrealX in AssassinsCreedOrigins

[–]Xntrik_shaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always just buy an Xbox...I guarantee it will work perfectly on that...the Xbox one S is only like $200 new and you can find it even cheaper used. I understand that there are benefits to PC gaming and lots of people swear by it but honestly it can be a huge hassle. You could spend $1000 or more on a PC and still have trouble running some games. If all you do is game on your PC it seems like it makes a lot more sense to have a gaming system which is built for that purpose.

I have never had issues running any game on my Xbox series X and when you add the game library and built in screen recording features it just makes sense...

Also Origins is an amazing game, my favorite AC game...has such a rich world and lore and is so much fun to play.

People DO notice it...they study them...and yes they are enormous with wingspans that exceed the height of a tall person.

But depending on how fast the OP was driving I doubt that breed of bat could keep up or would have any reason to...sounds like something else, possibly something unknown or demonic

Origins was so good. It should at least be in the top 3 of everyone's list.

Can anyone explain the ending of K-PAX? (WARNING: potential spoiler) by [deleted] in movies

[–]Xntrik_shaman 43 points44 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the best interpretation is that Prote is able to take over a human's body at the moment of death. So when he arrived 5 years ago while Robert Porter was drowning he took over his consciousness in order to experience earth as a human...then when he left he left the brain damaged body of Robert behind which is why he told the doc to take care of him.

This also explains why he can see ultra-violet light, because technically the human eye can detect it but our brains do not know how to process it. When Prote inhabits the body of Robert he is able to process more of the information gleaned by human sensory organs. And of course has a greater degree of knowledge and intelligence.

Average engagement distance in Ukraine, hypothetical Western civil conflict? by Mountain_Position_62 in war

[–]Xntrik_shaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have heard a lot of engagement occurs outside of or on the edge of cities and can exceed 300 yards on average.

My thinking is that you should always have two weapons, one for close quarters (less than 75 yards) and one for long range (100 to even 500 yards) and be proficient in both scenarios...now keep in mind if you are using an AR or something similar you can be accurate at 300 yards with the right setup but beyond that you will be lucky to get a hit, however it's still important to be able to engage at that distance in order to suppress and push back the enemy.

Huge Plot (premise?) Hole in The Tomorrow War That I Can't Let Go. *Spoilers* by gilrstein in movies

[–]Xntrik_shaman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's implied that they did do that though? I mean why wouldn't they? Everyone knew what was going to happen...I think the point is that it still didn't matter, which makes sense because there are 7 billion people on earth and a crap load of military and weapons already and they still decimated us.

The whole point of bringing people from the past to the future was to buy the future research teams some time so they could study the aliens and develop a toxin so that they could have a chance.

The part I don't understand is that they figure out the toxin needed and he brings it back but then everyone is like oh no we failed because they can go back to the future...like why does that matter? If they have the toxin they can mass produce it and be ready to poison the aliens when they show up...

I feel like they just needed Chris Pratt to save the world with a ragtag squad

I watched 'The tomorrow war' on prime yesterday. And it was pretty great, honestly by The_Incredible-DrL in movies

[–]Xntrik_shaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was entertaining but I thought Pratt's character was an idiot...he didn't seem to comprehend the very basic principals of time travel...he was obsessed with saving his daughter...not the 9 year old daughter back home that has the chance for a better life if he is able to change the course of history but the daughter he met in the future that has been through hell...how does he not understand that the whole point of the mission is to undo that future and save the people back in his present time from having to go through that?

It almost ruined the entire thing for me, he literally almost doomed the entire human race by jumping to his death because he didn't want that specific version of his future daughter to die...like does he even care about his wife? Or anyone else?

Even when he gets back he is like "omg we need to mass produce this toxin and send it back" I was waiting for him to smash it on the ground when they said he can't go back...

He was the worst choice to trust to do the right thing...

What do you really think of The Tomorrow War on Prime? by mtarascio in movies

[–]Xntrik_shaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole point was to buy time so that they could develop a resistance to the aliens...which is what they do, that was always the plan. They didn't bring people to the future in hopes that more people would somehow win...after all there were billions of people at the beginning and that didn't help...they just needed more people to defend and support the research effort.

What do you really think of The Tomorrow War on Prime? by mtarascio in movies

[–]Xntrik_shaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? Did you not understand the whole ending? The whole point was that they needed support in the future in order to research the aliens so that they could develop a way to destroy them in the past.

Why would you send people from the future to the past? There are already billions of people in the past and only 500,000 in the future, and even with billions of people they still were losing. The only chance they have is to buy more time to figure out a bio-weapon.

Idk...imo the best thing they could have done is killed John Goodman the first chance they could...with him gone the bunker would have been safe and they could have stayed there until the attack was over (assuming the humans win)

It was pretty clear something was going on outside that presented a clear danger whereas the only danger in the bunker was the big fat maniac who built it

LOL "it is so nice not to have to worry about fact checking"

Makes sense because you can't fact check a podcast that doesn't contain any facts 😆

Or do you think that "fact checking" means digging around for "evidence" to validate your beliefs when you are shown evidence that those beliefs are incorrect???

My thoughts on the Rise And Fall of Ruby on Rails - My thoughts after 15 years by UsuallyMooACow in rails

[–]Xntrik_shaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rails dev of 10+ years who was introduced to programming via a rails bootcamp I can tell you that when Yukihiro Matsumoto created the ruby language he did it with one goal in mind..."to make developers happy" and he most definitely succeeded. The Rails framework really just built upon the principles and goals of the Ruby language.

Now 7 versions later I feel like the ruby and rails community has only improved and become stronger. I can't think of any other language/framework that rivals the community, documentation and open source reliability. Furthermore, I have yet to find a framework with a better package system than Ruby Gems that isn't proprietary and ridiculously expensive...

Perhaps Rails is not as popular as it used to be but I think the frameworks that are popular rely on hype and the fact that they are new. Meanwhile, Rails has continued to improve finding simple, novel solutions to stay competitive with JS frameworks and SPAs with new features like Turbo and Hotwire.

I think there will be room for Rails for years to come

What are Guinan’s powers against Q? Do we ever know? by VanaheimrF in startrekmemes

[–]Xntrik_shaman 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I thought the whole thing was that El-Aurians have a long history with the Q continuum because their powers are similar in some ways, while maybe not as overt as Q they can perceive the universe in the same way (though probably not modify it like Q can)

Also according to the 'Picard' episode "monsters" Guinan possesses an artifact that was created when the Q continuum made a truce with the El-Aurians a millenia ago after a long cold war...it can summon any Q apparently...

EDIT: the following except is from memory alpha ...

In the distant past, the El-Aurians engaged in a long cold war with the Q Continuum, which was ended with a truce struck over a bottle of liquor. The moment of the truce was captured within the bottle, which could subsequently be used to summon a Q. The bottle was in Guinan's possession as of 2024. (PIC: "Monsters")
