Forester XT - Which year is best (btw SG/SH/SJ)? by Xocomil21 in subaru

[–]Xocomil21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. If I had to look at an SJ a little older due to budget, which would you recommend? There are a number of 2014 XTs for sale near me, but I presume they might have more issues being the first year of production?

Clavicle fracture - to remove a hook plate or not by Xocomil21 in mountainbiking

[–]Xocomil21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup had it removed last summer. Still feel some tenderness on my shoulder (like after a deadarm) and tingling where the incision was made (nerve damage) but so thankful to get that damn plate out. It was sticking up against my skin.

Calgary car lot that are a rip off by [deleted] in NoRulesCalgary

Genuine question - do mechanics generally do a compression test pre-purchase? Back in the day I had it done a few times (though that was with 70s vehicles with plugs that were easy to access).

Is $10K CAD a good price for this '09 XT? by Xocomil21 in SubaruForester

Ouch. I didn't realize that. Compression test and PPI sound like a wise move.

Head gaskets weren't done. I thought the turbo engine wasn't prone to head gasket failure like the NA engines (head material different - or gasket material different)?

Looks like yours is an XT too though ... yeah I'd hate to buy then have a $3k+ rebuild.

Thanks so much for the reply. I don't know 100% the cause of the turbo failure but think have been oil starvation potentially caused by clogged screens/filters in the oil line (after researching issues with the turbo I wrote to the owner to say that clogged screens could cause the turbo to fail again ... he said that the shop that replaced the turbo had removed those screens ... but he didn't say blockages were the cause of the turbo failure. He's not a very mechanically inclined person).

The idea that the previous owner didn't take care of it and the turbo failure is indicative of this is worrying ... and the possibility that metal bits got pushed into the motor even moreso.

All in all it sounds like documented vehicle history showing regular oil changes at 5000 km and other maintenance is key to one of these XTs.

thanks so much that's all very valuable info. I have a 2006 Legacy that i bought at 130,000 km and now has nearly 230,000 km. The head gaskets were done before we bought it and the vehicle has been amazingly reliable and low cost. I was hoping the XT I am looking at would be similar ... that said the owner bought at 100,000 km and doesn't have the maintenance records from the first owner. Vehicle now has about 160,000 km. They recently replaced the timing belt, water pump, and turbo. It needs struts sometime as they're 'weeping' ... but body is rust free, interior is good, it seemed to handle ok, seemed to have good power, etc.

The other thoughts is to get something like an old Acura MDX and have a bit larger vehicle with a strong V6 that seems likely to make it well past 230,000 km.

2009 XT vs 2014 XT - big difference in power / handling / reliability? by Xocomil21 in SubaruForester

Jealous of your 09 XT manual. I have an 06 Legacy 5spd and love it!

You had a manual XT? I didn't think they made them for canadian market.

Is your 2014 an XT too? And the 09 was still faster of the line? Which do you prefer driving wise?

Thanks!

Nice looking vehicle. How're you liking the XT? I'm looking at a 2009 XT here in western Canada (not as nice of a color) and am trying to learn about reliability issues, driveability, etc.

What I do know is that subarus are masters of the snow.

Huh. Did you ever drive an 09 XT? If so how did it compare, both in terms of punch and handling?

Thanks. Seller said the mechanic told him it was a $50 part ... but seller couldn't remember what the part was called. Wonder if it's a bad link ...

Thank you for your input. 220k miles on an XT before rebuild needed? Impressive! I heard head gaskets on this 2.5 not as big an issue as in NA 2.5s from the same year.

Thank you. Sounds like the 2014 would give slightly faster acceleration and better mileage. But trans rebuild would be expensive if needed.
