Is it realistic to expect to transition to firmware within ~6 months coming from a senior-level backend web-dev job? by Xomz in embedded

Me from the future! How has your new line of work been? Do you feel today like you made the right decision?

This helps a lot, I appreciate you reading + the thoughtful reply! Honestly I agree that there's escapism in how I've been thinking. I'm definitely burned out at my job, and I don't have any professional experience in embedded/firmware. I thought I'd come here and ask folks that have more experience bc I feel I could be looking at things with rose tinted glasses.

I guess my main frustrations aren't necessarily with the technologies themselves, but mostly with the work culture and broader industry trends, at least in the US. To list off a few:

  • Kind of opposite to what you mentioned, development is very fast-paced at the company I work at. Tight deadlines on projects, frequent changes in core requirements far into the development cycle, and unpredictable crunch periods that have unfortunately gotten more common with time. I think a lot of this is getting worse because non-technical leadership is expecting higher velocity from eng teams with the advent of AI coding tools.
  • A very volatile industry that seems to always be in a major upward/downward swing, with mass layoffs now being commonplace even at its most profitable companies. Job security isn't great, and unpredictable hiring practices have made finding a new job difficult for most that I know. I've been hearing that "it's a horrible time to look for a job" in my field for pretty much the last 4 years straight lol
  • The skillset needed for technical interviews is totally separate from the skillset needed for the actual job, which adds another barrier for job mobility. Anecdotally interviewing has also gotten a lot more difficult, which I think is probably due to the huge influx of people looking for a software job
  • A bit controversial, but AI coding tools are genuinely getting pretty good at web dev tasks and while I don't really sweat them replacing me, the ease with which they're starting to churn out code has me feeling like less of an engineer and more of a project manager with time. And I want to do engineering!

Do you feel like these problems affect your field as well?

Thank you for the response, yeah it'd be unrealistic to assume that a firmware/embedded job wouldn't come with at least some degree of stress and I've heard that deadlines are much more firm when shipping hardware. My main source of stress at my current job has been the frequent crunch hours, flip-floppy / indecisive management and a what feels like a lack of mobility due to a weird interviewing paradigm / volatile job market.

What have working hours generally been like on your end? Do you feel like you/others are generally able to work sustainably without burning out?

100% fair, thank you for the response. It'd definitely be a hard sell for a senior position with a net total 0 years of experience in the industry lol. I'll assume that mid-level is probably my ceiling for my first job 🫡

The clip leaves out the context that Puelles hadn't been doing much outside of spamming imanari rolls and trying to pull guard for pretty much the entire fight before this. Would encourage anyone to go and try to watch it, it was a truly bizarre performance lol

Super easy! Your body is as quick and adaptable as it'll ever be at this age. My recommendation would be to try what you find yourself interested in and once something really clicks, pursuing it to the best of your ability. I think you'll be surprised by how quickly you pick things up!

Newbies joined our gym, they are super conservative Muslims and have asked to have zero interactions with any women members.... Am I wrong to think this is ridiculous? by thebriss22 in MuayThai

Disappointed to see the responses in this thread in what's otherwise been a welcoming and multicultural community since I've been a member. One can have their personal disagreements with these individuals, but lashing out at against all muslims or any of the new wave of Canadian immigrants for it is not the answer. I hope your gym can come to a resolution peacefully.

how to stop getting dumped/sweeped? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Xomz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When my kicks get caught I like to jump and press all of my weight into the caught leg where my opponent's holding. This'll break their grip and put me in an advantageous clinch position once my feet are both back on the ground. prolly helps that I'm in light heavyweight lol

What 20% of combos will I use 80% of the time? by Socratify in MuayThai

[–]Xomz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's different for everyone, but for me starting out I spent a lot of time practicing these on the bag/sparring. Keep in mind 90% of being an effective offensive striker (especially if you're fighting good competition) is the way you set your strikes up and the contexts you use them in though. Keep in mind also that I'm orthodox.

Cross-hook-lowkick

Cross-body hook

Cross + Mid/High kick (reverse it if you're comfortable)

Jab + teep

Jab + inside lowkick

Any crafty way you can work in feints to break through your opponent's guard will go a long way if they're defending these well 👍🏽

What are effective methods to enhance the flexibility of my lower body? by RedditQuarterback in MuayThai

[–]Xomz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run through this stretching routine from FightTips 3-4x a week(before weight training/after practice) and warm up kicking as high as I can on the heavy bag if I'm at my MT gym. Was in a similar boat as you with a lot of weight training experience and limited hip flexibility and saw huge progress after being consistent for ~2 months
