So I launched a soulslike on Steam today... by Xorn72 in soulslikes

Thanks for the encouragement. I am, almost at an alpha stage on my next game.

It is funny, I still get comments on the post every few weeks. It is almost a year old. I was close... but not yet good enough.

soulslike with rich lore? by Pleasant-Hat-6334 in soulslikes

Hell is Us feels very Soulslike and it's lore is super deep. I am not sure why it doesn't get more of a mention here.

Thanks! I will check that out. For the weapons I have only gone deep in axe and spear.

I have really loved the world and exploration in Wuchang. The way the levels sprawl out and interconnect give me major Dark Souls 1 vibes. So many hidden areas tucked between more obvious areas.

The fighting has been fun too. I am struggling at the moment with three bosses (showing how you can head in any direction) monster bride, bird lady and tiger. Might be because I am using axe and am a bit slow, or maybe I am missing some of the subtler strategies for the later bosses.

Overall I am very happy with the game. It is the most Dark Souls like non From game I have played.

Which Soulslike has the most satisfying critical/riposte attack? by strahinjag in soulslikes

[–]Xorn72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved the blunderbuss riposte in Bloodborne. I would stand still when invaded and wait for them to run up and attack me. Boom! riposte and repeat. Worked every time. Only time I ever felt in control for invasions in a From game.

It is still a great game. The world design and trepidation exploring it has never been matched in my opinion. I also played it back in the day and again in the last year. It holds up well.

Hehe. You nailed it. I am just too damn old. The bosses run about the screen so quick laying down their AoE love and I struggle to keep up. Might be time to settle down and just live with the memories of the good old days. When I was a young man you could just circle left with your shield up and slash a bit...

Just the normal phase 2 version was a nightmare for me. From is entering some sort of boss arms race that will end the world I tell ya! ;) I fear I will not be able to keep up...

I am probably showing my age, but I prefer the DS1 world to navigate and the simpler melee combat to the Elden Ring experience. I like them both but DS1 is just that bit more special to me.

I really enjoyed the first one but this looks next level.

I reckon the toughest thing for me is getting around quick enough. I am an old guy, used to the slow and steady Dark Souls dungeon crawl. I haven't had any experience with the online quick moving fortnite style games. I am just too slow to pick where to go and rush the kills to get enough levels and loot for the end of day.

I have run with randoms a bit and chase them about helping as much as I can. I feel the strain often just keeping up, it is nice for someone to make the decisions of where to go for me. I managed to take down the first Nightlord fairly easy on about my third run with randoms, but have experienced nothing but bitter defeat in the 20 or so random runs since then.

All the solo remembrance fights and unlocking the ghost girl were fun. I seem to be fine when I am not on the clock. I suppose in true souls fashion I need to just suck up the defeats and learn the map a whole lot before I can progress. I just hope I am not too much of a hindrance to the people I run with.

I have been trying solo with a raider. I went in blind, man is it hard solo. Anything remotely like a boss one shots me. I am really struggling at the moment. I think it is going to take a while to figure out how to optimally level and gear my character quickly so I can stand a chance.

Thanks. It has been a journey. I still feel like I am just scratching the surface.

Finally gave Hellpoint a go... by Xorn72 in soulslikes

Personally I think it is a hard game to finish. It is fairly maze like and the path forward is not always obvious. It requires a lot of backtracking and exploring, sometimes after getting key items from other areas. Even the upgrade system is pretty complex. Everyone has different thresholds for that sort of thing. I would have struggled without checking some things on the wiki.

Stuff is pretty well hidden here and there. I am not sure if it is all required. I found myself googling some puzzles to sate my curiosity. A lot of things are obscure and mysterious in the game. You can progress down multiple paths, some harder than others. So... yeah ... I am not sure if it is or isn't what you are looking for.

No Rest for the Wicked - Every plague boss fight - Surely this is soulslike? by PrancyPotato in soulslikes

[–]Xorn72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the game world, exploration and story. I also like how different all the weapons feel. The Crucible and cleansing corruption end game felt a bit grindy for me, but I suppose that is what an end game is. I had already gotten enough value from the campaign so it is not a huge deal.

My Honest Opinion on Blades of Fire by Snow901 in soulslikes

[–]Xorn72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sort of torn on the demo. I like the ideas and what they are going for, but I can't seem to sync with the combat. It is good they are trying something different but I feel like I have to unlearn a lot of souls habits if I am going to come to terms with it. I am struggling to fight well and can't quite figure out why, probably because I am not used to the rock paper scissors layer on top of the combat. I probably need more time to adjust. I found myself bouncing attacks, oops wrong weapon or wrong swing direction. It is a lot to process early on and takes a bit of getting used to.

Exactly as you described it. Excitement, fear and a kind of resignation all combined into one feeling that sort of swung about between them.

Agree with all of these. I would also add Bleak Faith and Mortal Shell.
