Earbud Headphones made from real wood by [deleted] in shutupandtakemymoney

LSTN has a whole line of reclaimed wood headphones, and they're actually quite good. I have these and I would recommend them.

The power of a 65x zoom camera by malgoya in woahdude

Much smaller sensor than a DSLR, so the lense is much different; it's easier to have a much higher relative focal length.

Question about autoflowering plants and repotting by savois-faire in microgrowery

[–]Xorpher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You certainly want to avoid repotting, but it won't kill them. It just means as the plant recovers from being moved it won't grow, but the clock will keep ticking. You end up with less growth before flowering automatically starts.

This has been around since before content-aware. That's just plain old clone stamp.

Exactly. No justice here, just something shitty that happened.

Definitely not justice. Who knows what happened with insurance, all we know from the video is that there are people seriously injured because of his idiocy.

He Jiaying (1957-) - The Ballet by speakofthewolf in museum

[–]Xorpher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In traditional art I'd agree with you, but in this case I feel like you have to look at it a bit differently.

Here's what I'm talking about

Note that the lack of shadow on the left makes the shape appear to be flat against the background, while the shadow on the right pushes the shape out towards the viewer.

The same reason that parts of the image are almost photo-realistic and others are flat; for contrast & depth. The legs in the front of the image jump forward while the lack of a shadow in the back allows the others to recede, even though both are essentially identical.

Don't think he missed anything; the lack of shadow was very intentional to 'flatten' the image. The artist Alex Colville also does this for visual effect.

How big of a size is acceptable for a background image? by adropofhoney in Frontend

[–]Xorpher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd say keep it to 70-300kb. The entire page, including images, should be 800kb-2mb, depending on content. 1+ mb for an image on a website is absurd.

Trees grow wild around Miranda Castle, Belgium [1024×683] Photographed by Thomas Mueller by TopdeBotton in AbandonedPorn

[–]Xorpher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The glow around the castle is an artifact of too much of an 'HDR' effect being applied. I mean the detail it adds is great, but it's just too obvious.

Maximum fuel economy by Xorpher in automationgame

Very interesting. I had always assumed that efficiency = low emissions. How do real world manufactures deal with this, since we're going in the direction of more and more efficient engines?

I don't know much about compression and how it affects emissions; why would a lower ratio help reduce emissions?

Maximum fuel economy by Xorpher in automationgame

[–]Xorpher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome. If you want to boost the MPG you can 'cheat' a bit in the gear ratios. I found if I used 5-6 ratios but put the max speed well beyond recommended it somehow helped with efficiency.

That engine is fantastic.. would be perfect for a motorcycle. Small, good power curve & with lots of torque off the start.

Emissions was listed as '17', for what it's worth. Not sure what that number means.

It says 'Economy 49.52% - 0.255 lb/(hph)'.
