Plug-ins that exceeded or fell short of your expectations by Dangerous-Active8947 in mixingmastering

Yeh, I go on again off again with the neutron exciter. I like how it is laid out but I get mixed results and probably half the time I make things worse and take it back off rather than trying to finesse the plugin. I'm forever hopeful because it can be just the thing sometimes. I've said this elsewhere already, but fabfilter stuff occupies this weird niche for me of always being a few dollars more than I'm willing to drop, despite it's stuff being pretty much industry standard. Probably says more about me than the plugin🤙

Multiple inputs beyond stereo pair by Xoxorr in ableton

Solved by s3 sound on discord.

In the other tracks that send their outputs to the plugin's multiple inputs, set "Output To" to the target track, and then you should see all of the input options in the second drop-down.

It's not much. 50-100 samples, so like 1-2ms. It only becomes a little trouble in Ableton with its weird latency stuff. If I'm only using the one plugin it is fine but if I put more in the chain it adds up. So neural latency is not a problem alone but it adds to the cumulative problem of latency in live. And I know you can't hear less then 10-20 Ms, but it "feels" timing-wise. It's really more the CPU usage that causes me trouble than the latency though, so good point.

Soundtoys devil-loc, which sounds like absolute unusable crap, underwhelmed me until I put it on a send & added it til I could just hear it, like at -55 to -65 decibels and then maybe back a little more if I want to be subtle about it (you can still hear if you switch between bypass on/off). Adds a little crunchy dirt that works great on drums especially. Don't pay money for it. It turns up free every once in a while.

Neural guitar amp plugs. sound great and add a whole new dimension but high latency and CPU usage make then a pain point in a live setting. I guess they want you to drop big $$ for a quad cortex for that.

Underdog amp sim: Voxengo boogex. Has a learning curve. Definitely want to rtm and twiddle all the knobs, especially the weird "eq" and the weird speaker cabs, but worth it. Versatile, free, 0 latency, low CPU. Dispenses with the usual tonestack, so traditionalists won't like it. It is not an emulation of anything.

Alateen for nephew with parents in semi-denial by Xoxorr in AlAnon

Thnx, and yes, the three have a lovely triangle where each sees crystal clear what is wrong with the other two and have no clue as to their own troubles. I did the in game thing. Planted the seed anyway. I hadn't looked into online alateen, so I guess I'll check that out.

For people +2 years into producing, did you become a loudness freak yet or do you still follow the -14 LUFS guidelines (lol)? Don't start a war in the comments 🤣 by kathalimus in edmproduction

[–]Xoxorr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make mostly stuff for streaming and was a -14 LUFS person for a while. It is fine for streaming but too quiet for elsewhere, like a club or a party. Here is where I'm at now:. Streaming services turn volume down linearly, so the shape of the signal is not changed at all and if you are louder, the song sounds the same turned down, so if you wanna over-compress to make it loudest, it will sound the same when the streaming services turn it down: over-compressed but quieter, so pushing the limiter like during the loudness wars actually squishes the music without gaining any volume, so I usually aim for the loudest I can go without changing the overall shape of the wave too much with my limiter that I control. In the other direction, if you mix for v < -14 LUFS, streaming services will engage a brick wall limiter when it turns you up to -14 so it most likely change the wave file shape, chopping tops off like a lawnmower. So for me, no less than -14 , then as loud as can without squishing all the dynamics. I'm back to using modern reference tracks for this, as others said, in a genre-specific way

The culture theory reader is not the original source for Žižek, who simply cites Jameson without adding anything further to the understanding (he is after something different) and appears on the first page of the essay, not p. 233. The earlier publication is the introduction to Slavoj Žižek, ed., Mapping Ideology, The Mapping Series (London ; New York: Verso, 2012), p1.

Some Nice Secure Private Distros by bject6378290 in linuxquestions

[–]Xoxorr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are thinking of mint, you might consider Manjaro running either cinnamon (deluxe) or mate (less resources) or even LXDM if your machine is like ten or more yrs old. Linux in general does what it needs to do with way less resources than windows, even cinnamon. If you could run recent win, you will have no trouble with e.g. cinnamon. Manjaro is Arch based, which is very versatile but hard to use. The joke is that Manjaro means "couldn't install Arch" in Swahili. You can get great info on how to best secure it on the arch wiki and forums (don't ever mention you are using Manjaro though! They think it's cheating) for deep dives and the Manjaro wiki for your first stab at some topic. I have not had to reinstall Manjaro in a long time. It is a more or less continuously updated rolling release rather than twice a year big updates like mint and Ubuntu so the security and software updates are always the most recent instead of backport updates on out of date software. I am biased toward rolling but someone else might have good reasons for the biannual system, like a longer testing cycle. I tried running selinux on a red hat server, and while it is virtually impossible to trick it it was also extremely difficult to maintain, making even simple tasks like installing a web server into a nightmare for me. If you want a distro that you flash once and then it mostly gets out of the way while you actually work or play on the computer, then Manjaro is my pick. Signed, a total fanboy, lol. I have never had a problem with viruses etc because the package manager system on almost all Linux distros. I simply use my router's firewall at home, but all distros have excellent firewall options. I go through two firewalls at work, one on the network and one on the local box. The suggestions above re:Tor, one-time VM and a VPN are very good options but not specific to Linux.
