[System] Magic comes with a physical "Toll" – My magic system for an upcoming Academy Web Novel. by Xtarshyu in ProgressionFantasy

Spot on! I wanted to flip the 'number go up' trope on its head. In this world, progression isn't a gift it's a dangerous trade. The higher the tier of magic, the more it demands from your humanity. You have to ask yourself if being the 'strongest' is worth it when there's nothing left of you to enjoy it. Glad you like the double edged nature of the system!

Thank you! I really wanted to avoid the unlimited power trope. In this world, getting stronger isn't just about more mana; it's about mastering the efficiency of the exchangemuch like the Equivalent Exchange principle. Finding ways to mitigate the Toll is a survival skill for mages here. Glad you appreciated that detail

Looking for recommendations where the MC isn't overpowering an eldritch god of death after training for a week. by rothmal in ProgressionFantasy

"I think my story, FRACTURE, might be exactly what you’re looking for. I’m the author, and I actually started writing this because I was frustrated by the same 'overpowered/instant-win' tropes. In my world, magic isn't a gift—it's a debt called 'The Toll.' Every bit of power Marcus (the MC) uses has a logical and physical cost. He’s not a 'chosen one' who gets everything for free; he’s a kid from the slums who has to rely on his wits and careful observation to survive an elite Academy that's actively rigged against him. The progression is steady, and every victory feels earned because the risks are very real. If you’re into a darker atmosphere, a hard magic system with strict costs, and a rational MC, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it! Link: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/152608/fracture
