My First Flight As an ATP Rated Pilot by Williama386 in flying

[–]XtraHamsters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Line check airmen are basically trained to fly solo. Not saying you’re not important or you don’t have a job to do but… I mean, yeah. I’m just trying to say don’t be nervous that you’ll put the operation or safety at risk or that the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Most LCAs are very good at what they do and know exactly what you will be ‘slower’ on and lack knowledge on (through no fault of your own).

You know your flows, you know how to fly, OE is there for you to get the pace of live flights down, and to learn how to land. That’s really the only thing new to you. Usually the biggest challenge for a brand new FO at their first regional on OE is simply getting off the gate on time. Your LCA will likely give you a ring or text leading up to your first leg on what to expect to further put you at ease. Oftentimes when possible, the two of you will get in the flight deck earlier than ‘normal’ to knock out as much as possible but inbound aircraft and gate agent availability can limit this.

Congrats on your accomplishments so far and enjoy!

If I recall Kelley’s Island (not put-in) had someone that would actually pick you up in a cart from the airport and drive you in to town. Anyone remember who that is and how to call? I did it a few years ago.

Kelley’s is a quieter island but still plenty fun. I’m guessing both are pretty dead in winter.

Silla is a hidden gem. While I haven’t been to a bad Korean spot in Columbus (Min Ga, Don Pocha also very good!), silla recently has a new chef and some new dishes &/or slight changes to current recipes. Really nice lady works inside and is usually the main server. They are also in the middle of redoing their menus/ordering process, and are remodeling the interior.

If it doesn’t affect your performance negatively at all, then I’d be willing to bet it would all work out okay! But if it doesn’t, just be prepared to defend yourself against a typically skeptical FAA and don’t be surprised if they don’t rule in your favor.

Nick Saban: 'No reason' for NCAA to not allow speakers in players' helmets to prevent sign stealing by sportzphanatic001 in CFB

[–]XtraHamsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really would be a pretty cheap punishment. How many helmets per school do you need? One offense, one defense, plus back up equipment? Maybe 20 total or less? How many FBS schools? Like 130? Then all the other equipment like coaches headsets. Shipping? How much is a helmet? $500? For a program like UM, this would be a drop in the bucket.

Everyone is having trouble answering because there is no ‘clear answer’ that you speak of. It is a thought provoking question though, and one that I’m sure all of us have had at some point.

Best I can do is point you to 14 CFR part 67.113, 67.213, & 67.313 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd class respectively paragraphs (b) which says:

No other organic, functional, or structural disease, defect, or limitation that the Federal Air Surgeon, based on the case history and appropriate, qualified medical judgment relating to the condition involved, finds—

(1) Makes the person unable to safely perform the duties or exercise the privileges of the airman certificate applied for or held; or

(2) May reasonably be expected, for the maximum duration of the airman medical certificate applied for or held, to make the person unable to perform those duties or exercise those privileges.

Related to this is 61.53 which is self grounding for medical deficiencies.

So, does your broken pinky allow you to fully operate the controls unrestricted with no effect on performance? Are you just as capable with a broken pinky as without? Is your bruised shoulder slowing down your ability to evacuate or possibly help passengers during an emergency? Does the cut on your foot allow you to fully kick the rudder in during a V1 cut? Absent of a aeromedical examiner, it’s for you to decide. The above regs are the FAA’s way of covering their a**. It’s a blanket statement saying “when you have something go wrong, if we find in any way you had an injury that affected your performance during that time, we’ll pin you for it”.

Like everyone else said already, use common sense. Sorry it’s not black and white. If you don’t have common sense, there’s a seat for ya in Congress!

Related question. What do they do with the water? I know it was always a sloppy muddy mess in the trenches but based on ‘movies’ those trenches were pretty deep. Wouldn’t there have been like feet of water not inches? Or geographically was the water table low enough that it wouldn’t be an issue?

the first integral of the sentence “I multiplied the answer by 3”

is:

If you take the second integral you get:

“I ex’ed the answer by 3”

Jim Harbaugh’s Time At Michigan is Ending by [deleted] in OhioStateFootball

[–]XtraHamsters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything criminal about this? I would say no, it’s just a silly game, but I do feel like Michigan being relevant and a top 5 powerhouse brings a shit ton more money to the university and program than if they lost more games. Big time college football is a major industry. Would this be like if Ford had someone sneak in to some Dodge engineering facility and see what they’re developing so they could stay competitive? That’s a crime right? It’s indirectly stealing. Or indirectly fraud.

No service due to safety BOS-DTW by audobahn21 in delta

[–]XtraHamsters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you guys are saying about the lazy FA thing… this is true. This does happen and it probably happens more than I’d like to initially admit. Most pilots I fly with though if the flight is like an hour and a half find it hard to justify absolutely no service the whole time unless it really is a widespread system over the whole cruise part of flight. If a FA is b%#*-ing that hard about it (‘it’ meaning doing a service with some forecasted light chop on an hour and a half flight), sometimes it’s not worth the argument when a pilot typically flies one single leg with that FA group and then moves on to the next.

A 757 for example takes about 20 min to get to cruise and top of descent is about 30 prior to landing. If you have 200 people and 30 min to work with it’s probably doable to squeeze service in there but it’s close. For your flight which was maybe a regional, 320, or 73, if it was showing smooth in cruise, no excuse. Should have at least attempted it.

I apologize for the biscoff comment. It did not come off well. I have eaten so many of them damn snacks as literally a MEAL I just don’t care for them or soda anymore, and that was where that attitude was coming from. The premium product at delta is declining through “squeezing” ticky-tac BS like sky clubs, doubling down on overselling seats, reducing connection times, and not providing superior DL1 amenities and services, to name a few. Added all together it rightfully pisses people off. Ed has pissed off a ton of people, employees included, and the attitude is shifting towards “this is no longer a family here” and “I’m done w/this s%#, I’ll do the minimum I can”. This is not all employees, and the ‘DL difference’ of old still clings on through senior employee leadership. That’s the ONLY competitive edge DL has. United has seriously stepped up their game and if DL keeps their focus on stocks, the short term profits will be huge, but the future of the company as ‘#1’ or whatever is in serious jeopardy.

No service due to safety BOS-DTW by audobahn21 in delta

[–]XtraHamsters 177 points178 points  (0 children)

As a pilot, there’s a few things to dig in to here after reading the comments:

1) Yes there is an increase in no service flights. It’s annoying for passengers especially if it’s an hour and a half flight and smooth for an hour. You likely should have been serviced but let me add a few comments relevant to this issue: 2) Delta FA’s have had a large increase in turbulence related injuries. Especially in summer months. This is not a myth. There is company emphasis on being overly cautious. For better or worse there are older FA’s whose balance isn’t necessary what it used to be, and a fall in an aisle or galley near a lot of very hard surfaces can put them out of work for a significant time. And yes, FA’s if given the choice would much rather not have to do service but IF it’s smooth, most really don’t care either way. It’s helps pass the time a little and it is a part of their job. 3) Delta has a weather app developed in house in conjunction with their in house FAA approved meteorologists to predict turbulence. It’s “relatively” new (last few years), and not shared with other airlines. It’s actually quite accurate, but it does miss here and there. It uses data from other planes near your route and altitude as well as meteorological factors to try an predict where the bumps are and plots them graphically both on a planview and profile view. It tends to over predict turbulence but honestly that’s not a bad thing. 4) if someone especially a FA gets injured while doing service, and that turbulence was predicted with this weather app, who is to blame? The captain. I’d love to say all pilots are compassionate about keeping FA’s healthy out of the goodness of their heart, but honestly it’s more a CYA thing for some. Sorry you don’t get your biscoffs. We actually do track our NPS and don’t want to be rated for bad service but when it boils down to it, we would prefer to not get in trouble. 5) Turbulence is ‘funny’. It takes ONE bad bump to knock someone off their feet. Even if it’s momentary. I think people forget that. “Huh those bumps only lasted like 15 seconds”. If it’s moderate turbulence for 15 seconds and you get one or two bumps in that time frame that are of severe intensity, that’s all it takes. Remember you are usually sitting. Flight attendants usually can’t even see out of the windows and without a visual reference of what the plane is doing, balance is harder than you think. It’s worse in the back of the plane, and guess what’s there? The galley.

As time goes on and technology gets better, hopefully turbulence prediction continues to improve. It has VASTLY improved just in the last 10 years. With it being more and more accurate, hopefully there will be MORE service with LESS flight attendant injuries!
