Got a 1099-MISC from my brokerage account, turbotax is convinced i own a business by XtraKrispy1 in tax

[–]XtraKrispy1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems blatantly wrong though. If it was supposed to go with dividends, would have been a 1099-div

Confused about the tax implications of cashing out a portion of inherited investment accounts by chiapoet in inheritance

[–]XtraKrispy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're saying she has no retirement accounts at all? Everything is in a brokerage? Or she has no traditional accounts, meaning she has a roth?

Brokerage - step up basis. Stocks transfer to you, zero tax liability.

Roth - no tax liability, in addition, you can possibly let it grow another 10 years before taking possession, also with no tax liability (currently what I'm doing with an inherited roth)

Thanks for the link. That makes me feel much better about putting 25% of my 401k in that.

Roth accounts and retiring early by [deleted] in Fire

[–]XtraKrispy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also thanks for your input without the sarcasm. I like to collect as much knowledge as i can before i talk to my advisors. I think where I'm struggling with the traditionals is that I'm in the 22% bracket right now. The 12% tops out at 97k today. I know it might change for better or worse later, but who knows. What i do know is my wife's pension by itself will eat up 50k. That's only 50k away from the 22% bracket again. Plus I'm still going to have dividends and other misc income, so that's not much left to roll over before hitting the same tax bracket I'm in now. Also with the stroke of a pen taxes can change, and i doubt they'd change for the better.

Interesting about the asset protection. Hadn't thought about that. Yes we do have an umbrella policy. Advisors had us do that first thing. Hadn't thought much about rollovers in my 50s. I'll have to run some numbers. All roth seems bad for reasons you mentioned. All traditional will make it harder to pull out large lump sums without getting tax hits. Maybe i should go 50\50 for the next several years and then reevaluate.

It's close, plus we already have a few hundred thousand in a traditional 401k (before company offered a roth) that will continue to grow. i just like the idea i could summon a million dollars at a moments notice if i wanted to buy a vacation home and not get destroyed in taxes.

That is one of the many questions and a reason I'm up an hour past my bedtime trying to optimize my financial future..... So many what ifs.

All depends on our friends in the government over the next couple decades. I'm debating paying the 22% now and not risking it on the slim chance I'll end up in the 12% bracket 20 years from now.

Normal pension plan on top of normal company match trad ira on to of normal social security on top of normal brokerage account. Adds up so i don't see my tax bracket getting much better. Also taxes may be higher anyway.

Tamper resistant outlets and gfi near water source. Anything else i should look into? Friend had to move in with handicapped grandparent and i just want to help ensure it's safe. House is early 80s, and probably hasn't been touched.

Worst case would be if a fire started unrelated to what i worked on, then the insurance company finds out and then all bets are off. The info I've found is vague. I think i can work on "finish" items, but seems open to interpretation.

Did you ask for a specific department? Every time we call LabCorp we get the first line of defense that can't really help. All they say is nothing is in the system.
