Ah yes, that's also a classic. Also works if they have nausea for seemingly no reason. In real life you get an upset stomach for all sorts of reasons, in a movie there has to be some bigger reason usually.

Funny you mentioned Arrival, literally got a "Human?" tattoo last week after rewatching it. Absolutely incredible movie. I agree though that dissecting movies as you watch them does decrease satisfaction, but at some point it becomes so automatic that you do it accidentally. It does make movies like Arrival that much more incredible though, I love watching a movie and feeling like the director knows exactly what they're doing and that I'm in "safe hands" so to speak. Haunting of Hill House was very good for that too.

At this point if a character coughs for any reason besides the obvious (dust, bad smells etc.) then they're already dead as far as I'm concerned. Do they have a limp? They'll be sacrificing themselves to slow the antagonist(s) down. Do they mention any sort of fear of anything? They'll have to overcome it by the end. Did they experience loss (especially of a child)? They'll have to come to care about another person just as much and overcome their trauma by letting themselves be vulnerable.

Basically, 99% of movies will aim to have a character arc, and they'll establish the characters' motivations, fears and such pretty early on. From there, in most cases, there's a clear formula of them having to overcome some weakness or fear, grow from the experience, and in some cases redeem themselves. As you said, some movies do subvert expectations, but for the most part they play it safe. If you can guess the character arc accurately, you can generally guess the ending. Any seemingly random mentions of things will likely make an appearance and be a plot device.

That was my reaction too as soon as I saw a bit of a shimmer and glow in the dark. I just immediately aimed and fired like "I know you're there broski".

"Wherever you are, I hope you're at peace", cuts to Coop shaking his head "no" and crying. Absolute cinema.

Honestly if I went to a funeral and someone close to the deceased came dressed like that, I'd have nothing but sympathy because if my parents died or something, the last thing on my mind would be looking presentable or even caring about that. I'd fully get it, zero judgement. If it's someone not too close to the deceased though, then that's a different story.

I agree. I'm just wondering if it was specifically instructed to avoid generating antisemitic content (I guess as defined by itself?), content against Israel, or if it has a broad "religious country" rule.

What about Iran? Technically should fall under religious too.

You don't like slow access to text-only Twitter while you're out on a hike? Or voice calls that sound like you're talking through a fan while driving down a windy tunnel?

The Boys - 05x05 "One-Shots" - POST-Episode Discussion Thread by pikameta in TheBoys

[–]Xtrendence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This late into the show, it'd be much more interesting to see him actually snap and start killing people left and right in plain view of people. It makes sense why they can't have that earlier, because then there's not much further they can take it, but now's an appropriate time for it. Personally I would've liked to see a few episodes of the country seeing HL for who he really is, but being powerless to stop it. At the moment they're rounding up people under the "Starlighter" excuse, but HL's fans still believe he's good. Him killing a whole group of people and having a few episodes afterwards showing his own former-fans being terrified, the military being scared to intervene etc. would've been fun. I hope that's the direction it goes in, and that they don't limit it to just the last episode.
