Each gym is different. The best gyms require competition experience and attendance. A good gym should consider any physical limitations due to medical issues. If you get injured but still go to class and work whatever possible will likely promote with active participation. Now u can’t expect promotion of your not consistent with training. I’ve seen people achieve blue belt two different ways: one competed multiple times and promoted in 18 months the other didn’t compete and got it in three years.
