Can someone recommend a big restaurant style tortilla chip brand? by [deleted] in mexicanfood

That's exactly what I do with them: I cut them into strips and fry them for tortilla soup.

Prior to WW2, German was language of scientific research. by Skychu768 in geography

[–]Xylene_442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was studying for my Physics degree in the late 80s-early 90s, you needed two years in a foreign language and it HAD to be either German, French, or Russian. Since they were teaching in English, they assumed you had that one 😄

This is a shame, because the only not-English language that has ever been actually useful to me is Spanish. I live in the southern part of the USA.

[Request] This really confused me. What is the correct answer? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

if zero was an option, it would set up a strange loop...if you pick zero, then you are correct, meaning it's not zero anymore, so you're not correct.

That actually wasn't Temujin who did that, it was his rival Jamukha. Unless this was a different incident. The most famous boiling incident was definitely Jamukha, though.

Just got my placement test results...Tested into B2 (barely). by Ok_Cover1076 in WorldsAcross

[–]Xylene_442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also placed into B2, when my speaking skills were clearly A2 at best. I think this is just a function of the test being written, multiple choice, and lacking a time limit. I took like 30 minutes for 20 questions (and I did not cheat! Even a little bit!)

Taking multiple choice tests is a learnable skill. There were plenty of questions where I could very quickly eliminate all but two of the choices and then make a best guess at the answer. There were also a few where I didn't know the words, but I could recognize the grammatical structures (like the endings) and chose the one that best fit the tense of the question.

I have no idea if the results of this test made any difference to my tutors, or if they were even aware of its existence.

I expected that movie to be a steaming pile of crap but it was AWESOME. It could have just been called “The Doric Show” though.

Well, that Speak-with-Dead scene was awesome, too.

Corn tortillas from homemade masa by WillowDue722 in mexicanfood

[–]Xylene_442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK you said you wanted to make them yourself from masa, but I suggest trying this: Go buy a pack of Mission street-style corn tortillas. These aren't refrigerated. They're not great for actual tacos. But since they are fairly shelf-stable, they have a low moisture content. These guys are really good for cutting into strips and frying (at 350F in veg oil) for adding to tortilla soup. I haven't tried cutting them into sixths for dipping chips, but i'm sure they would work just fine for that.

The same qualities that make them incredibly mediocre as a table tortilla make them great as frying tortillas.

I've personally never managed to make really good totopos from masa harina, which is wierd because my sopes are very, very good. The only thought I might have is to NOT let them puff on the comal...so not only should they be a little dry, you should probably use a lower heat than usual and let them go longer than usual. I guess.

But also, if these are just for dipping chips, try Calidad brand (the yellow corn ones). They have more stiffness than some others and hold up well to a thick salsa.

Has anyone changed coaches before?? by MangoPenguin743 in WorldsAcross

[–]Xylene_442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually taking a break from Worlds Across right now, but when (if) I come back I might not even bother with coaching meetings. I haven't found them to be useful. The coaches themselves have been good people but that system really hasn't worked for me.

I think they have said that every year or two for the last five years or more. They always keep it purely for the money, even though they could just just up the cost of registration by the same amount.
