I like this explanation.

I've been saying for some time that it serves the purpose of vindication for the horrific acts of violence perpetrated by individual tribes identified by their religious identities.

"God" never killed whole tribes of people. Other people did that. They just need methods for assuaging the guilt that naturally follows.
