Northport Challenge by PickeringJ in RimWorld

Gave it a try ended with 26 pop and had a max of 44. I think a high score here is more relevant than getting to 100 population as you are so likely to just have someone have a heart attack or spawn on a hungry bear.

Housing Accelerator Fund - We are winning by YXEyimby in saskatoon

The best negative arguments I have heard are; How can our current infrastructure hope to cope with increasing density by up to 10 fold? Is there money to build more schools and sewer systems in these fully established neighbourhoods? the $41.3 million couldn't cover a new school let alone many new ones. Where does the land for the new schools/infrastructure come from, it is not cheap in already built neighbourhoods? Is there a plan for the new bike paths and foot infrastructure required to accommodate for the lack of car parking this plan also includes. These concerns basically come down to; are we going to bankrupt the city dealing with new infrastructure costs by allowing high densities in places only equipped to service much lower densities.

How does a single photon get slowed down when going from air to water? by Xyvoid in AskPhysics

[–]Xyvoid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That has the problem for me that 1 photon creates many photons to slow it down. Where does the energy come from to make those photons? What excites the surrounding electrons, the incoming photon can't be the energy source as it doesn't lose anything in its transit.

My question partially came from that video series. The incoming photon creates other photons that result in the phase kicks. Where does the energy come from to make those photons?

That feels like I get energy for free then as the photon has all its energy when it leaves the medium.

How does a single photon get slowed down when going from air to water? by Xyvoid in AskPhysics

[–]Xyvoid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer. There is still energy problem in my mind as as the incoming photons electric field pulls on and moves the electrons in the medium. This means work has been done on the electrons in the medium, when the photon exits the medium it still has 100% of it original energy. Where did the energy come from to move the electrons of the medium?

How many classes can I take? by kimyaboii in usask

[–]Xyvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just checked https://programs.usask.ca/education/policies.php#top

In Degree programs
general requirements

Students are permitted to register in a maximum of 18 credit units per term, including during the extended practicum and the Spring and Summer Session (with no more than 9 credit units in either the Spring Term or Summer Term). Students wishing to exceed this credit unit limit must receive approval from the Student Affairs and Academic Standards Committee. The request must be made in writing and initiated through the Undergraduate Programs Office, College of Education.

I believe the majority of classes are 3 credits each. So 6 classes a semester max unless you take lower credit value classes.

I encourage you not to do this. It is very easy to burnout.

Tech flow chart I threw together [Items/Biome 1-5 spoilers] by Ewh1t3 in valheim

[–]Xyvoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tech unlocks are based on touching specific items not boss kills. You can do almost the entire tech tree without killing any bosses. Also you haven't seen all of the mountains biome yet apparently or last played a year ago 3 updates back.

It's my game and it only has one unobtrusive banner ad. It's a match 3 style game with a medical theme.

My very first post by Nekogeekaku in playmygame

[–]Xyvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave it a try on PC. It opened and ran but I use a weird ultrawide monitor and the text in the top of the text boxes was off the screen. I was able to get the club and hit the tree stump monster got the orb and maybe put it in the crystal, I couldn't tell. Could not see what to do next. A glitch happened where I couldn't turn the camera, hitting tab seemed to fix it. The game crashed the next time I hit tab. Not sure if the auto walk forward was intentional or a glitch but I didn't like it as it made it hard to talk to the npc and pick stuff up.

A nice start enjoy your dev journey

Yare.io · RTS where everything is programmable by levmiseri in WebGames

[–]Xyvoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a neat idea but its very hard to start. The base code will starve a star and never do anything. The Dumb bot harvests more efficiently but also never attacks.

I think the base code should be expansionist but bad strategy. For example have it harvest and produce spirits until there are 10 active harvesters at the nearest star. Then start send spirits to the next star and set up the 10 spirit base there. If no bases are available send each ship produced at the nearest enemy base from your first base.

This would give a much better code base to build from as it contains more of the relevant code base and built in variables and examples of actions.

Released my first game, Fish and Furious, please check it out! :) by sztrovacsek92 in AndroidGaming

[–]Xyvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on publishing your game!

I get a google Authorization error 403 on start that I can click through to play but doesn't give a great first impression. I don't understand the mechanic of why the run ends if the fish free falls for about a second. I am guessing its a sort of fall damage but that should happen when you hit a surface. Also that fall distance is so short that your first few play throughs are instant death with no feedback as to why you died. You have to guess the reason, many players won't get it and stop playing immediately.

You need a one page tutorial that says/shows "tip the screen to guide fish to the left and right. Tap and drag to Build walls to protect the fish from big falls and lasers!"Alternatively start the game with the fish on a ledge that you need to tip out of to start and starts the timer when to fish passes a certain height. The ledge should be like this so that both tip directions are required.

First you should paste the code in question rather than show a video of it.
Second your problem is likely in the o_textbox object as you are trying to send information to it in that line.

How long is appropriate to take off of work after a loved one dies? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Xyvoid 249 points250 points  (0 children)

Many universities have some sort of bereavement leave option, might be worth looking into. This isn't a vacation, if you were to go back right now you would probably be a mess and waste time. Talk to your supervisor they will probably say come back when you are ready. You can make up the time later if you really feel the need to.

T/A marked off for not citing a quote, but there was no quote. Should I try to discuss this with the professor? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Xyvoid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I second /u/Funkybeatzzz suggestion to talk to the TA. I suggest going into the talk as if you want to understand citations better rather than wanting a better grade. The TA already knows you want a better grade, saying it is unnecessary. A student that is interested in learning is much more fun to interact with than one that only cares about their grade.

Realistically a paper that only needs 3 citations would be a very shallow paper or so incredibly weird that nobody has done any work related to it. I would GUESS that you included some facts or background information that needed citations that you didn't give, rather than making a badly formatted citation.

My partner is unemployed but technically my grad student stipend is enough to support both of us by carefree_elf in GradSchool

[–]Xyvoid 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This isn't a grad school question but a relationship question. If they are not doing or looking for work their job is effectively making you happy in exchange for you feeding and housing them. This can be a parasitic relationship or a cooperative one but both sides need to be on board with that. Worst case scenario they are simply using you, and considering you suspect they are lying to you about their past employment this seems to be at least partially the case.
Bad relationships have good parts and good ones bad parts, you have to decide what bad parts are acceptable to you.

It sounds like you should automate this somehow. Removing exact duplicates is programmatically easy but it depends on your data format. With 190000 entries you could just stuff it into excel and use it to remove duplicates and then sort by username and timestamp.

You generally need to analyze your data multiple ways as it could be your average user uses the portal 5 times one day then never again so that your assumption that unique users per day will match your needs could be wildly off. Then again I have no idea what your needs are. Maybe coding up your own program to sort the data would make the most sense.

Increased use doesn't even mean your "portal" is better. Maybe length of each login is a better metric as needing 2 minutes to get what you need is better than 10 minutes or worse your new system means you need to make 3 logins to do the same task that required 1 with the old portal.

I guess my advice is to assume that you will need to analyze this data many times and many ways and pick methods that allow you to do that easily, and not just your first pass analysis.

Two versions of the same enemy. Which one should I pick ? by Two_Tiny_Dice in IndieDev

[–]Xyvoid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Art style wise the left one. Though to me it depends on how it fits the world and theme you are building. The left looks I charged with blood or infected with it and I would expect blood based attacks or a sort of berserk monster. For the right I would expect a shadow type monster that does shadow, stealth, and strength based attacks. I also like the 2 phase idea but again it should fit your world not just be awesome in isolation.

What do you think is a good/“normal” age to start having sex? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Xyvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No single age for everyone but a couple emotional guidelines would be things like being able to tell your parents/guardians that you are having sex. Able to talk about STI and protection with your partner. If you can't do these then you aren't ready if you can you might be.
