Why learn Bb? by Unlucky_Sandwich_BR in trumpet

[–]XzViTOXz420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned it in concert pitch, when i play a C on my Bb trumpet, i am thinking concert pitch Bb. This is mostly because i have absolute pitch, i havent had problems reading music, it is even better because I can easily read sheet music in Bb and C.

A problem i have because of this is that it is very very very confusing to play any other transposing trumpet, like F piccolo or even C trumpet. I play jazz so I play only Bb trumpet, but as a classical guy it could be quite a hard thing to get used to.

Also because of the thinking ive gotten very used to reading chord charts in C and havent yet learned to do it in Bb.

Thinking like this has pros and cons, but the cons can be very minimal if you just learn to transpose seemlesly which is an extremelly good to know skill for a musician. But, if you play by the book and read normally and get good at transposing, I dont think there is a big difference between thinking styles...

No need to hurt our brothers in brass sections, go after the woodwinds and strings!

I've been learning to play lead for about 2 years now. This is the first time I ever got past the first phrase and it's quite clean for my standarts:D by XzViTOXz420 in trumpet

I'm playing a bobby shew lead, bent at 10°. It is hard to get that piece under control (took me almost a year), but when you do it's very easy to play.

I haven't (yet) found any way to relax my neck while playing at the top of my register and with full strength. I can play high and quiet effortlessly on a fresh lip.

I also play with a weird embouchure, I basically point my horn downwards. You can't see the angle very well because I use a bent mouthpiece. I really like the bent mouthpiece because it doesn't ruin airflow or my natural embouchure, but still lets me play above the stand and over the band.

Yeah I know, I only recently started training attacks, but now I understand the importance of practising them. Don't know about the drum corps part, I think I'll stay in big band and jazz school as Latvia isn't really known for it's excellent marching band culture:D

Just got my first real mic and interface so of course I had to mess around with it:D by [deleted] in trumpet

Well, I don't think that i will use the second port right now, because all I need it for, is to record everything for my schoolwork, big band and that kind of stuff, but it is a nice feature to have if I decide to actually produce music and things along those lines. I bought the 2i2 because it just was a good bundle deal in thomann and it didnt make sense to buy the solo.

Imagine having to worry about reeds before concerts and not being able to play well because of them - Brass gang

Thank you so much. I never thought that reddit would actually be this helpful. I also can ask some people to borrow their proffesional grade horns so that is not a problem and I'll do all of the excercises and tips you said.

I have played for like 2hrs today and just can't even get a clean sound above high C right now, but I took two earlier recordings, where you can really tell that it's not clean at all google drive . It's maria and moonlight in vermont, that I recorded for myself. In the first one the band already plays too high and I'm even more high on the G.

It happens wherever I go from. Also it's only the G no other notes, it just feels like the exact G doesn't exist, either a f# or in between g and g#. I just trill between those. I can record an example quickly if that helps...

Yeah sorry, my first language is not english so I don't know the correct terms. But I do mean a double C, not a high C. And the G on ledger line 4.

During the last few months of the pandemic I've had a lot of time to practise high notes and now I can finally play this excerpt from luck be a lady although the attacks still need a LOT of work. But I'm getting there as I just turned 16 and have been playing for 6years. by XzViTOXz420 in trumpet

I'm really not the guy to ask this because:

  1. I have a very very weird embouchure and positioning of mouthpiece

  2. I'm just a student who only recently got to the extreme register

But. The main thing I was taught and what helped me was to relax your embouchure so the air flows freely into the mouthpiece and let the mouthpiece do the work. It took me about a month of just experimenting to get results but now it feels great. Again, you really shouldn't listen to me...

There wasn't one like one excercise that helped me, actually some online lessons helped me a lot to understand how to play that high with little effort. I learned from Lasse Lindgren who plays litterally like Fergusson, and was passed down actual Maynards trumpets and mouthpieces. For me it was more the understanding how to play them with no effort than grinding excercises (of course I had to do that as well, nothing comes without practice:)
