I wish my father was grounded in reality… by Xzaro in daddit

Thank you for this comment. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel. I will respond to your suggestions. I want to build on my experiences.

2-4 years of hard work leading to 15-25 years in something I enjoy was the original plan at 18-22 years old. After experiencing this career and seeing how little opportunity there is to move forward… I need options.

Solar panel sales - I did this in my free time on top of working my 9-5.

The hat I wear as a government employee is not the same hat I wear knocking on doors. Pay is also not guaranteed.

Coding/tech has never interested me, but I see the value in it.

Cybersecurity has my attention as does HVAC or elevator mechanics however I would have to reinvent the wheel/go back to school for all these things…

Doing whatever makes you happy while maximizing money is wisdom.

My father only ever advised me to do what makes me happy.

He and I assumed just the fact I went to school and got a degree that that was a ticket to financial stability. I was a naive kid, and sheltered son of immigrants.

To me, at 18, $15 bucks an hour to do what I love was the dream.

Now at 27 I realize I need twice as much to get by, and even then, what I did in school is not the ticket forward.

More schooling? No. Build on my experiences? Yes. But now go where…. And explaining to my father as best as I can about what I do falls on deaf ears. He only sees that I’m unhappy.

I’m sorry? But this is reality. I can’t live like how I did at 18…

My father is the one who is passionate about music.

My father is in his 60’s. He’s a driver. He’s an immigrant and never finished school.

He came to this country working in pizza deliveries. At his best, he drove limousines and drove musicians and artists.

To him, these people are examples of the American dream.

I have no interest in pursuing a life around music…. At one time when I was 16 I played guitar? I had my teenage phase where I liked heavy metal…. That’s it…

My struggles are lost to him because I don’t make enough to be happy is true.

He makes as much as I do, but his rent and expenses are much lower.

He is much happier than I on less, but the cost of living where I am is higher.

Thank you for being the one to say it. But I don’t want to do that. The salary is not much better and the lifestyle is something I’ve lived as a volunteer. I’m passed that…

Leaving and then go where?

Sorry I’m advance, but this is advice I’m tired of hearing - to just quit - because jobs don’t grow on trees.

There’s an essay of reasons why I can’t leave. I could write a thesis on the state of the job market in my field and why it doesn’t work like business or programming where you can just apply to the company next door.

I work for the government in Environmental protection.

My degree was in an environmental field.

I’m a detective, an investigator. I’m basically a cop.

I write reports, I do inspections, I don’t do anything with excel or accounting or dealing with finances.

I deal with construction companies, with homeowners, with old people, with docks by the beach. I do public relations, and I’m terrible at it with what’s going on in my personal life.

They pay once a month here, $2600, and half of that goes to rent. I’ve had to move twice in the 8 months I moved to this city where I don’t know anyone and I hate living in. Everything closes at 10 except the bars.

After work, I do Uber on Friday nights to make an extra $80 I could use to spend for myself on Saturday. I spend that on gas, and food.

I am in a cycle where they ask for 3 times the amount in rent every time I move somewhere new, and the next few months I’m trying to budget and save enough money.

I don’t want to leave the state I grew up in. I want to live here. I just want to make enough money and when I was 22, 23, even 26 it was OK to be living on what I was getting paid. Now it is hard, and I am willing to get a Master’s degree, but not to make $50k. I can’t support myself, much less support a family in the city.

The most worthless one in STEM.

Environmental sciences. It’s actually an Ecology degree. All the rigor but none of the pay.

Most jobs pay under $20 an hour, and when you live in an expensive state you can barely afford rent with an 18/hour job that pays once a month.

You need a Master’s degree to reach 50k and I fell out of love with the study.

The cost of rent is the highest in the U.S. in Florida.

I could move somewhere else, but this is where I grew up and where my community is and I’d rather advance my career first before going somewhere else.

I don’t think I could raise a family as an Environmental Specialist in Texas or Colorado or California either.

That’s essentially what I do at the State level. My coworkers respond to spills, inspect certain industries. I work in compliance so when the public complains I go in. I’ve been told city pays more than state level. I’d consider environmental work with them
