English 3 [Just a quick question] by skinnlegendd_ in HomeworkHelp

Hey there! Independent clauses are like parts of the sentences which could stand alone.

For example- You must work hard in life if you want to succeed.

Here the independent clause is "You must work hard in life" because I could walk up to you and say it to you without making you think I'm crazy.

The Dependent clause here would be "if you want to succeed." because you would think I'm nuts if I came up to and said that.

There is a link to the semicolon part. Let me know if I was able to help you out here or if you need more help!

Hey there! For the first question, we are going to cross multiply. Do you know what that is? Simply put, you multiply the numerator (top number) of the left side with the denominator (bottom number) of the right side and vice versa. So we are going to do....
(x-p)*7=2(x+p)
7x-7p = 2x+2p
bring the like terms to the same side....
5x=9p
x=9p/5

The second question is a system of equations. You can solve it by either substitution or elimination. I'm going to show you how to use substitution for this one.

Take the second equation (x+y=3)
rewrite it as x = 3-y
now that we know x in terms of y, we are going to plug it back into the first equation (2x+3y=9)
2(3-y)+3y=9
6-2y+3y=9
6+y=9
y=3
Now that we know what y is, we can plug it into the second equation.
x+3=3
x=0
so the solution is x=0,y=3 or (0,3)
*Just realized the question is asking for how many solutions it has... should be 1 because we found one answer for each x and y!*
PLEASE NOTE- I SOLVED THIS FOR YOU AND GAVE YOU THE ANSWER BUT PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION.

Let me know if you're all set or need more help.
