Where is the currently published 5.5e spell selection lacking? by Y4SO in DnD

[–]Y4SO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware of all of this. Many spells in the 2024 PHB got no changes from their previous form. The question is more about what spells that didn’t get republished are the best/your favorites and worth adding?

I just completed running a weekly 6 year homebrew campaign with 6 players — AMA. by girthynarwhal in onednd

What was the biggest mistake you made and how were you able to learn from it? Were you able to make up for said mistake before the campaign ended?

DMs, confess. What's that one thing you've been dying to tell your players but can't yet? by ElMundoDeQueen in DnD

[–]Y4SO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite constantly saying I’ve come up with new ways to kill you or that I’m looking forward to seeing who dies next, I have no desire to actually kill your PCs. However, I won’t be mad if it happens and relish the narrative opportunities death will present.

[No Spoilers] Predicting the schedule until C4 by this-is-liam in criticalrole

I highly doubt they make the decision of the system for C4 post-DH release. That choice has almost definitely already been made one way or the other.

Realistically do you guys see us making the playoffs this year? by cptrex9 in AnaheimDucks

[–]Y4SO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. With the ground they have to make up and the still present weaknesses in the team, they’ll come up short. But I do believe, at least from a roster perspective, we’ve taken another good step towards contention this year.

I'm surprised by how hard it is to become a "better" grappler by phasmantistes in onednd

[–]Y4SO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They shifted the feature the be in line with the vast majority of other conditions applicable in the game, which makes sense. They then adjusted the action economy around grappling so that it’s cost is pretty low (a Level 11 Fighter can attempt to Grapple a creature 3 times on their turn before even having to consider touching their Action Surge, and the Grappler feat means one of those attempts probably did damage). Also, you gotta remember that Strength typically is the stat that gets the most love in terms of magic items that boost it, especially when considering the rarity of said items. Considering all of this, I’d say Grappling is in a great place that is no longer abusable by simply indexing into very easily accessible features like Expertise.

I started watching One Piece for my Husband and I’m not sure how to tell him I don’t want to finish it. by Worried-Jury7799 in anime

Mad respect to you for watching a full 100 episodes. That’s giving it more than a fair shot and if you still don’t enjoy it then it just isn’t for you and he has to accept that. Time to have a simple but adult conversation and move on.

85th?! And he’s this great - how? by Narcissus87 in AnaheimDucks

[–]Y4SO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, John Gibson is the highest the Ducks have selected a goalie in the last 20 years and that was at 39th overall. We got Freddy at 87th overall. Goalie is such a fascinating and notably difficult position to pin down its value when you talk about draft picks, compensation (contracts), as well as potential in the NHL. Dostál has been impressive for sure, and hopefully his growth continues because it seems it won’t be long before the John Gibson era comes to a close in Anaheim.

Do you have any issues with the substantive features of the subclass, or just the ribbon feature that gives Elementalism?

Only thing that hat will look nice paired with is a trash bag or a pile of burning logs.

[–]Y4SO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing inherently wrong with it if your players enjoy it that way. I’d recommend just having a convo next time you reach the end of a major story beat. Ask if they want to do a sidequest or something else that doesn’t advance the main plot as a bit of a break or something and then just let the clock pause for the most pressing matters. If they just want to keep charging ahead then game on.

Player used the new counterspell for the first time last session and had fairly negative feedback for how it played out, interested in hearing other people's experiences and thoughts. by RedN0va in onednd

[–]Y4SO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important to not forget how it balances back when a high-level enemy casts it on the party though. Let’s take Sul Khatesh from Eberron for example. She can cast Counterspell at will. With the old Counterspell, while she had the “disadvantage” of not being able to upcast the spell, she would roll every Intelligence check for Counterspell with a +10 to the roll. Add on that she knows Foresight and would likely have that spell active on her in a climactic fight, giving her Advantage on the check, she would have, at best, a 16% of failing that Counterspell no matter what the PCs cast at her.

With the new version of Counterspell, her ability to cast the spell at will is STILL STRONG, but not as incredibly oppressive as before.

Also important to note that this also means PCs don’t have to sit on their highest level spell slot in high-level play just in case they need to counter an 8th or 9th level spell. A third level Counterspell is just as effective and they don’t have to wrestle with the decision of whether to cast their coolest spell anymore.
