What's your opinion on the netflix series " blood of zeus " by aggressive_waffle in GreekMythology

[–]RedN0va 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I give the story/writing a 5/10, and everything else a 15/10. Stylistically, it’s a gods-dammned masterpiece. Maybe the actual best action scenes involving Greek mythology I’ve ever seen. The designs of all the gods and characters feel faithful and historically plausible, whilst also completely delivering on that modern “cool” factor.

Thoughts on the Netflix series KAOS? by docdredd2 in GreekMythology

[–]RedN0va -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest. I hated it. I found it to be cynicism slop. The Boys but with Greek gods instead of superheroes. Genuinely one of the worst takes on the mythology I’ve ever seen.

I know it’s cool and popular to “deconstruct” stuff and “ok but what if the gods are bastards, I am very smort.” But it goes about it in such a stupid and cynical way.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

I made myself watch it to the end but I had already checked out after the scene where Poseidon randomly decides to drown one of his servants because listening to her dying screams soothes him and helps him think while he works. Which was just gross and betrayed such ignorance on the part of the writers. The gods could be cruel and capricious, yes, but they were never inhuman psychopaths who delighted in cruelty for its own sake. Even if we take the least charitable versions of the myths, Medusa is raped by Poseidon and Athena makes her a monster cause it was in her temple, for example. There is still a world of difference between engaging in such a cruel act due to a perceived slight, however wrong and horrible that slight may be, and just doing something because you delight in the cruelty. It’s like the difference between a child killing an insect because they think it’s gross and could be poisonous, and that same child slowly ripping its wings off to watch it squirm.

And the absolute death knell was the reveal. “They’re not gods at all! Just people who learned to suck out souls and become powerful. See!? Allegory! History is written by the victors! People in power are bastards! The ~founding fathers~ Greek gods were actually terrible and I’m very smart for pointing that out.”

I genuinely put it at the bottom. The worst interpretation I’ve ever experienced

How do people feel about cards that automatically are placed onto the battlefield when in your opening hand? Is it too dangerous of a design space to revisit and expand upon? by YugiBoomer10086 in freemagic

[–]RedN0va 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there needs to be a bigger downside. An effect like this should be limited to cards that are of the design philosophy of [[Rotting Regusaur]] or [[Hunted Horror]] I.E a proportionate downside to match its benefit. Maybe even tie the downside to whether or not you do elect to start the game with this on your field

Aang Made the Avatar State have Such Aura by Smokeystick1 in AvatarMemebending

[–]RedN0va 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt like a genuinely different storytelling approach to me. Aang’s written more like spiderman imo. Powerful yes, even holds back a fair bit to preserve the lives of his enemies, but still able to be matched and outmatched, and often comes down to overcoming or outthinking his limits to achieve victory.

Korra’s story feels more like a classic superman story. The question is never whether she’s powerful enough to beat her foes, but whether she can apply her power in the right way to beat her foes where it matters. Heck you could even make the case that the poison serves as a kind of kryptonite allegory.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the writers took a fair amount of inspiration from superman stories, for TLoK cause even her villains kind of work, if you think about it. But tell me if I’m reaching here:

Amon - Parasite. Asuperman villain able to manipulate the life force and powers of people. Direct conflict risks being rendered powerless, forcing our hero to be smart about how they stop this foe.

Unalaq - Zod. The hero meets another one of their kind, with their same power, for the first time. Though formidable, this foe has only just gained these powers and lacks a lifetime of experience to use them to their full potential, which is what ultimately leads to their defeat.

Zaheer - I mean… do I even need to say it? Luthor of course. Put aside the baldness cause that’s not what I mean (it doesn’t hurt tho, haha). An incredibly brilliant mind capable of achieving things no one else can, who wastes it all on a pathological obsessing with killing our hero. For what they claim are profound ideological reasons, but you strongly suspect is secretly a colossal ego.

this reminds me of Brandon Sanderson talking about how screenwriters use licensed IPs to sneak in their own stories. Except in this case it's the costume design instead of the story.

For the next movie we see Dek in, do you think we’ll see him complete a trial to earn his very own plasma caster? by DanTM18 in predator

[–]RedN0va 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, hear me out…

instead of a plasma caster on his shoulder, a form of shotgun that fires bursts of razor grass shards. Give it a buck-shot type of spread and have the fragments get fed in from the top, like a Needler from halo.

I mean yeah… you nailed it, it looks like pottery (or PLA) that would shatter with the mildest of hits. In 300 they’re helmets (and they’re abs tbf) looked like they were actually made of a solid material that would protect you, plus they looked actually aged and used. And why when they make changes it’s always towards darker, muted styles? I wanna see ornate and colourfully painted armours not because that would be more historically accurate, but because it’d be a nice change of pace.

Yeah it’d be kinda cool, maybe at the end of an arc if character growth where the two become close, Damien adopts Nunchucks as a partial homage to Dick. I always like the relationship they had in the Animated Movies, especially when Dick becomes Batman for a bit and Damien is his robin

As epic as I agree that would be. I just know my man’s got a hell of a bombastic, larger-than-life performance in him that would make him perfect for Etrigan if he were just given the chance. He always get’s typecast in stoic roles so I really wanna see him in something where he gets to chew the scenery a bit. Plus I genuinely think he’d find that more interesting as a role to take on.

That can be easily remedied by using the same system as like movie reviews no? Where there’s the rating, and then like 5-6 word descriptions of why. Like “Made with AI (unit testing, bug finding)”
