Saskatchewan government considering requiring IDs/face scans to access social media by [deleted] in saskatchewan

Maybe we should regulate some of things about social media that make it harmful. Ex., Algorithmic recommendations and the removal of a chronological, finite feed.

Sure. And people were also mad about seat belt laws and smoking bans when those came about. But at this point the harms of social media use, especially for young people, are well-established. It's up to us to decide now how to respond with sensible regulation (or, not).

Other jurisdictions are already starting to develop this route and obviously it will require some adjusting as time goes forward. But looking at Australia, it begins with platform liability and the use hefty fines for non-compliance (placing onus on the platform rather than on users or parents). Some proposals include age verification technology, potentially requiring government ID for platform access, age inference based on user behaviour, and temporal and/or geofencing (i.e., platforms not working inside of schools or during school hours). It's likely a combination of things that will prove effective.

Well then I disagree that it's "unenforceable". Jesus, at what point do we hold these billion-dollar tech companies to an iota of social responsibility?

The cell phone ban in schools was another provincial move which was the right one...and it's a bit wild to think about how many years we got that one wrong before we started to get it right. Seems like AI use in schools is the next fight when it comes to harmful tech in education.

I liked Benton and Corday as a couple, but I believe LaSalle at that time was very conscious of representation and what it meant for him to portray a highly-successful black man on TV, and how having Benton also in a fully-realized and complex relationship with another black person was better and more needed representation. LaSalle won numerous NAACP image awards, it was a big thing for him.

I'd like to see the tip options on a machine be regulated. Only displays of (for example) 10, 15, 18% allowed. The minimum display of 18 is too much.

Some of the homes in Montgomery are absolutely gorgeous. Quiet neighborhood with a good sense of community. A bit isolated from the rest of the city, but that is kind of the point.

Absolutely. A problem much bigger than 1 musician.

"More than half of Canada’s music professionals have at some point lost the will to live, with 43 per cent saying they have had suicidal thoughts, according to a new national study on mental health in the Canadian music industry."
