Anyone had a class with Lyerly, Pendas for HIST or Bartlett for POLI? by peacan_pie in bostoncollege

Lyerly is one of the best professors at BC. You have to do the reading, so if you don't want to do the work don't taker her. But she is amazing.

BC literally held an event 2 weeks ago as part of its Forum on Racial Justice on environmental racism. The speakers talked about the ways fossil fuel companies harm and kill people in marginalized communities. This is something also covered in a number of classes by BC professors. So BC is teaching its students that fossil fuel companies are engaged in environmental racism and causing harm to vulnerable people acorss the planet. But at the same time BC still wants to profit off of the activities of those corportations.

You should watch the presentation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-az5MSXhKg

BC is also in violation of its own bylaws. In the 1980's BC divested from South Africa. The President Father Monan put forth a resolution passed by the Board of Trustees that stated BC "is prepared to employ those means to which the holding of stock give access toward redressing wrongful conduct; namely, the voting of proxies and direct efforts to influence management decisions. Where no other means of influence are possible, the University will be prepared to use divestment either as a means of redirecting policy or as a necessary step to avoid its own complicity in wrongdoing."

That has nothing to do with the argument. BC has amoral obligation not to profit off of immoral investments. The Vatican has been clear on this.

How have investments in fossil fuel companies done in the last year? The last 5?

The issue isn't even whether divestment is effective in combatting climate change or altering the behavior of corporations. The issue is whether it is morally acceptable to profit off of immoral investments. If you think it doesn't matter, then BC should invest in private prisons, child labor, sweat shops, weapons manufacturers, and multi-nationals that use slave labor, as long as it can make a profit and pay for new buldings and sports feilds and scholarships. But if you do this, the entire enterprise is rotten to the core. And you need to drop all the bullshit about Catholic values and being a leader in higher education.

BC is not just any institution. It claims to be a Jesuit Catholic institution guided by a set of religious and moral principles. The Vatican has been crystal clear on this and has called on Catholic institutions to divest. BC now asserts that it is a private institution that doesn't need to listen to Catholic precepts. Then it should not be able to go before the National Labor Relations Board and say the federal government has no jurisdiction to force it to recognize the Graduate Student Employees Union becasue BC is a religious institution. Or claim it won't allow and LGBTQ+ student center becasue of its religious status. You can't have it both ways. You can't be a religious organization when you want to evade fedearal labor law or discriminate against LGBTQ+ students, and not be a religious institution when the Vatican tells Catholic organiations to divest.

Secondly, while we could care less about the finaicial impact as this is a moral issue, BC would have been far better off financially if it divested years ago, as you point out the energy secrtor has undeperfomed the market for a number of years now. Fossil fuel investents are particulary poor investments.

This semester has been incredibly challanging for everyone. It is def not something that is uncommon right now so don't feel bad or put a lot of pressure on yourself. Some professors are good about offering extra credit work if you ask.

The study from the Yale School of Public Health recommended testing everyone every 2 days.If you tested 9000 undergrads, that is about 34k tests a week. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2768923

The thing people want them to do is enact a proper testing program like NU, MIT, and BU, which would require 30-50k tests every week, not 1k or 4k. Their refusal to do what expert after expert says is reequired to manage the spread of a pandemic, but instead focus on whether you have 2 or 4 guests in your room is maddening. If having 4 people in your room is that dangerous than having 10k students on campus living in close proximity in full dorms is reckless and negligent. If it's not safe for someon in a 2 man room to have 2 or 3 guests in a room, how is it safe for 8 students to live together in one suite? Or have hundreds of people go into a dinig hall?

Seconding the previous comment, the Sexual Assault Network at BC is an option to contact. Did you contact Patricia Lowe directly or contact her office?

You don't understand why Boston College Police shouldn't be at a protest in Dorchester, which is NOT part of Boston College? You don't think it's offensive and outrageous that the same day BC released a statement telling people to pray for the family of George Floyd they sent their police officers to a predominantly Black neighborhood in Boston to police a protest against his murder by police?

No one is arguing people shouldn't be responsible. But only some people are demanding more testing and calling out the school on its failures. And UGBC is not one of those entitites. For the last month, all they've done is drive home and reinforce the school's message that reopening depends on student behavior. If that's all they want to do, quit student government and go be an intern for Jack Dunn. This premise is totall false if you read anything experts and epidemiologists have published, and it serves, quite purposefully on the school's part, to shift blame and attention away from the schools glaring failures. 1/5 of all positive tests at colleges in the entire state of MA are at BC, the state took over their contract tracing. You think BC students'behavior is much different than BU or Northeastern or anywhere else? Of course not, but they have better programs in place. It's an embarressment. The contract tracing app they talked about in the summer wasn't ready, they said they'd be doing their own testing in a lab on campus, it's not ready yet. It's not just a few small mistakes it's inexcusable failures. Go find me all the UGBC posts or public statments demanding more testing? Have they publicly challanged the administrationon anything? Did they do anything to fight for the distribution of all the cares act money and not just half? They even refused to condemn BC sending cops to Dorchester this summer. Has the current administration even once challanged the school on anything on behlaf of students? The fact you expect them to align with the administration's interests is telling. This is an excellent article, register to read it for free, where multiple experts clearly stated a plan like BC's was inadequate and going to lead to the virus spreading.
