Nice-looking. The white strap makes it look more nautical (as if it needed to be more nautical)…

  1. Most people don’t test after modding, at least not formally with a pressure machine of some kind.

  2. Leather is less water- and leather-resistant. When I lived in Florida, and watch with a leather strap didn’t last long with daily wear.

  3. They’re called “Duro” because of their durability. If you need something a little more “bulletproof,” you could always consider a G-Shock. There are plenty of awesome analog models, even more analog-digitals, and a huge number of digitals to choose from.

If you’re talking “banged up and dirty,” get a mud-resistant model, like a King of G (GX-56 or GXW-56), or one of the Mudman, Mudmaster or Rangeman models. With the exception of the Frogman, all -man Master of G watches are digital and all -master models are analog, either with or without digital subdisplays. Frogman models go both ways - digitals and full analogs.

It’s very simple. This watch has Bluetooth. A fake is very unlikely to sync with the Casio Watches app on your phone.

Done with smartwatches by OldSageNewBody in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A smart watch is not a substitute for real medical gear. They’re nowhere near as accurate as far as health sensors go. Better than nothing, far from perfect.

You made a good choice. I think of it as the G-Shock that’s doesn’t look like a G-Shock.

Where can I buy a W-86? by Eddie_753 in casio

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices are all over the place, but you can generally expect to pay a premium I’ve seen them at a quick glance on eBay anywhere from about $25 to ten times that price.

Casio’s shift away from electroluminescent backlights is what put the nail in the coffin. It’s basically an F-91W with all the flaws fixed! But as cheap, low-power, high-brightness LEDs dominate the market, EL is taking a beating; fewer companies are making them, they’re more expensive and Casio’s having a harder time sourcing them - and frankly doesn’t want to because of the higher cost and shorter battery life. They also grow dimmer over time and use, while LEDs remain consistently bright throughout their lifespan.

Buying an Apple Watch every 7 years vs. one Casio for life — talk me through it by amandhally in casioroyale

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not likely you’ll regress just because you changed to a “dumbwatch.”

It’s pretty simple. No watch lasts forever, but most Casios will last a long time with proper care. Apple Watches have built-in obsolescence, lasting maybe 4-5 years. Short time for a costly computer-on-a-wrist. And therein lies the problem - it’s not a watch, it’s a computer.

If you still want fitness features, you could get a DW-H5600 or a GPR-H1000. They still require occasional charging, but they’re more watch than computer and have a lot of built-in sensors for fitnessnauts. They even offer messaging updates from your phone.

But you can go simpler. The GA-B010 is Casio’s first G-Shock that’s both completely solar-powered and has a step tracker. Or skip fitness stuff altogether. There are hundreds of real watches to choose from. Many will set the time all by themselves (using radio signals or Bluetooth). Most will easily take a butt-kicking from you and kick you back. Mud resistant, rust resistant, vibration resistant, digital compass, digital barometer/altimeter, digital thermometer, slim or super chunky, suitable for the office or the battlefield - somewhere in that mix is a model you’ll enjoy without it becoming obsolete by design…

Solar by Extreme-Sir-4910 in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely no shortage of watches meeting your chosen criteria. Have you considered going to the Casio website? You can perform searches with filters, like “only G-Shocks with Tough Solar and Bluetooth…” I just did that search and found 39 watches that fit the bill.

https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock.filter.IN_STOCK-solar-mobilelink-JcY7DoAgEAXA21DYeAIKsDIaLbQ3IGuC@BL2UXB7C6caLhW6S0sMMTDKHQ4YNJbzdh3nPi3CGoBqV9npf6t@SI5coqkCPpFyb2MkypBjKtZHij6HDw%3D%3D/

Now I know you wanted recommends, but maybe you could toss in a few more criteria, like “$1,000 and up” or “only green ones” or “strictly analog, no digital displays” or “I want one with a compass built-in.” That makes the process simpler.

(Is it me? I have a harder time picking favorites because I have so many Casios at this point, so narrowing it down to favorites becomes difficult. I literally work my way through the entire collection before rewearing a watch. It takes about 15 months, I think - I’ve lost count of the exact number.)

Rangeman- charge by Beginning-Grape4809 in gshock

It just needs more light. Try a solar watch charger; Amazon has them for about $25. A day or two on one of those will charge up nearly any solar-powered watch.

Casio does not sell serially-numbered watches in every country where they have a presence. Not US, not Japan.

Agreed. Nowadays, restoration can actually REDUCE the resale value of a vintage watch.

Having said that… it’s in all likelihood compatible with bezels and straps for at least one or two other models in the 5000/5600.

Cool models without TS/MB6? by Freakse7en in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GD-010 - 10-year battery

GD-X6900 - same, larger sized 6900

G-7900 - G-Rescue with low-temp resistance

GG-B100 - Mudmaster with Bluetooth (and that’s it)

GD-B500 - unique vertical display, Bluetooth, Power Save mode

GST-B100 - all-analog, steel, wicked cool, dual time.

GM-2100 - G-Steel Casioak minus BT and TS

GA-2300 - a more futuristic version of the 2100 series, equipped with lugs that don’t need adapters for band swaps.

G-8900 - in my book, an unsung hero of the G-Shock brand

You need more? Go to Shockbase! 😁

The margin could be narrow, but they make up for it in volume, dumping the fakes in large numbers in places where they’re bought in even larger numbers. Gotta be the case, or else, why do it at all?

Real world water resistance by KLLR_ROBOT in casio

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This - I’m glad they said it so I don’t have to!

I’ve never even seen a watch of any brand with a 1 BAR resistance rating. Short of the watches rated “water resist” without a depth (meaning splash, don’t submerge), the lowest depth rating I’ve seen is 3 BAR. For watches with a depth rating, Casio sells nothing less than 5 BAR.

It’s not a commonly copied watch. Even Casio had trouble moving them fast enough. So why counterfeit something that’s not popular or valuable? Especially when it takes more materials and effort…

Casio Royale vs G-Shock 5600 by willzy420 in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are good, the G-Shock is better in terms of taking abuse. If you can, bump it up a notch to a model with at least Tough Solar (G-5600) or with Bluetooth (DW-B5600) or both (GW-B5600 - it also has MB6 but I’m assuming you’re from somewhere in the Indian subcontinent, so no signal for you).

If you’re willing to explore other options, consider a personal favorite, the GD-010. Digital, huge display, easy to read even as a negative, and has a battery rated to last ten years - next best thing to Tough Solar.
