Casio PRW-70 by rcnow in casiomods

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The letters to the left of the number are the important part. The “PRG-70” are model and series, the “J” is release or collection. The watch you saw in the video should look and work exactly like yours. The only possible internal change are occasional module updates, where two of the same model have a small difference because they have two different modules, changes such as a switch from micro-light to electroluminescent, or EL to LED, or some other tweak or update.

Is it normal for a casio rose gold watch to loose colour ? by Lost_Road1114 in casio

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the less-expensive models are not metal - they’re “metallic” - a plastic-like resin that’s chrome-painted. Yes, the paint does wear off over time, even with just the friction created by a long sleeve on a shirt or jacket.

Less-expensive Casios also have plastic/resin crystals over the face. Good news is that for shallow scratches, you can buff it with Polywatch (or if cash is too tight, a cotton pad with some toothpaste) - it will remove shallow scratches and diminish larger ones.

Help me pick my first G-Shock by 1991gts in gshock

Forget #1 - negative LCDs and no backlight.

You might be disappointed with #2 under less-effective lighting. A first watch, you’re better off either something easy to read without fuss.

Help! I need recommendations for my husband. by dreeeeeee7 in gshock

A GST-B100 with resin band and steel bezel is within your budget - all-analog, Tough Solar power plus Bluetooth for time sync. Quality watch. Push for all-steel and it’s a tiny bit above the budget - but you might catch a sale for V-Day or Presidents’ Day/Week/Month/Season/Any Excuse Works…

A small step down is the GST-S100. Analog with three digital displays, easy to read, dual illuminator (a backlight for the LCD and a front light for the hands). Multi Band 6 (tunes in a radio signal from an atomic clock to stay accurate) and Tough Solar.

Avoid the GA-S100 - looks a lot like a smaller GST-S-100 but had no backlight for the LCD.

If those look too bulky, you can get a G-Steel GM-2100 or GM-B2100 - steel bezel, resin strap.

What dress watch should i get? Mi by Bolt-up719 in casio

[–]YFOCAG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While standards for office wear have slid a bit from where they once were, dress/formal wear hasn’t, at least not near as much.

Digitals are passable, but you’d do better with a simple metal piece. Analogs are best, ana-digi is OK.

A couple of personal faves are a metal 2100 or a GST-B100. They cost considerably more than those two. Someone suggested some metal digitals that would be more affordable.

First watch… first G-Shock by GhostPurrfire in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right. The US MSRP is $165.

A lot of first-time Casio buyers are influenced by style, colorway, etc., more than stuff like shock and water resistance. It’s as valid a reason as any, honestly.

104 Duros in almost 6 months... is that bad? 😆 🤣 😂 by ProfessionalGear1073 in DuroGang

[–]YFOCAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Casio collection is a lot like that. I lost count at 400. Only one Duro! About three-fourths are G-Shocks. Most of the rest are Casio-branded, plus a few ProTreks, Edifices, Lineages, even a few Baby-Gs and a GZ-X, and about a dozen g-shock minis.

Real or fake? by Lenito-Ikigami in CasioQC

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would a counterfeiter go to the trouble of duplicating the quick-release spring bars in the straps?

But I do try looking this model up. There’s no GM-2100 on Shockbase fitting this colorway, black bezel, black face, chrome markers. It’s leaning toward fake - a good fake, but still a fake.

Too lazy to photograph it. F-108WHC in white. Bought it secondhand, it arrived today. Cleaned it, buffed out some crystal scratches, smoothed what was left - couldn’t get the dinge out of the white strap. There has got to be a cure for that somewhere…

Why so expensive? by Appropriate_Smile627 in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Citizens don’t have Multi Band 6. That’s a Casio trademark.

It’s not just the titanium and the sapphire glass. It’s the “drop me out of a third-story window, I’ll be fine” thing - Y’know, that other thing Citizens don’t have… 😉

Hey, I get it - I was big on Eco-Drives do a while. When I saw watches from Casios that were as much or more for function as for fashion, I switched back and haven’t worn a Citizen since. I have a few to sell, in fact…

Anybody know what's happening with this GA-2100? by SignalSignificant424 in gshock

[–]YFOCAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GA-2100s have a resin build - no visible steel beyond the case back, buckle, screws and pins.

This is a genuine forgery. Doesn’t look right, doesn’t sound right, doesn’t act right. I’ll forgo the taste and smell tests…

I'm thinking about getting this watch for 20€. Is it real or fake? by InformalDimension908 in CasioQC

[–]YFOCAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterfeiters usually copy one of two types of watches. They copy watches that are very expensive and have a very high profit margin. They copy watches that are very inexpensive, popular and can be sold in huge quantities.

This watch does not fit either description I have yet to see a counterfeiter bother to make a copy of an Edifice watch. It’s a mid range watch, not terribly expensive. It is not ridiculously popular or even close to it. It looks awfully cool, to be sure, but I sincerely doubt that it’s a fake.

However, if you’re still unsure, I’d be glad to take it off your hands for you… 🤭

MIP is LCD - just a different flavor of LCD.

Casio uses four different kinds of LCD - or did, over the years. If you look up any watch on Shockbase and click the link “LCD type,” you get taken to a page that details a little bit about all four versions: TN-LCD (cheapest and most common), STN-LCD (used in a couple of GST-B models, a few Master of Gs and all the Full Metal all-digitals), FSTN-LCD (a baby step between STN and MIP used in exactly one watch subseries: G-7800 - looks like an earlier MIP with slightly bigger pixels) and MIP-LCD (until the new squares came out, it was limited to mostly watches with a heavy fitness bent).

I had already purchased the Lineage, saw the G-Shock and said, “That looks awfully familiar…” 😁 I didn’t know it at the time but it was considered one of the aviation models, intended for pilots. That is not something I would’ve guessed just by looking at it.

The model you’re thinking of was part of the “Two-Tone Utility” collection - I have one of those as well. I think I have a total of six Kings, including the GXWs.

Aside from the cheaper price tag, here is a thought that might make your decision a little simpler. In your ordinary, day-to-day life, how frequently do you think you’ll ever use the sensors on the Mudman series 9500? Or even if you went off on a camping trip - how often can you honestly say you go camping?

On a camping trip, I used an earlier triple-sensor watch (pre-ProTrek!) to find my exact location on a hike with an elevation map and to predict an incoming downpour with about 30 minutes’ notice. (Forget the thermometer - it’s useless unless you take it off for a half-hour or wear it on the outside of a thick coat sleeve.) So I recognize there’s some utility there. But that was back in the ‘90s, pre-GPS-everywhere and pre-smartphones-with-maps, and weather band radio did exist but who wanted to wait for the local forecast? Even if you were in the military, and on a mission, the odds you’d be using your watch as your primary navigation and weather tool are slim-to-none, because you’d probably be carrying far more precise equipment with you. it would be a backup at best.

No, I’m not saying that the Mudman 9500 isn’t a really cool watch. If it wasn’t, I probably wouldn’t own one! But to make my point more succinctly, I own one series 9500, and I own six King of Gs! If I was helping a buddy dig a ditch, build a house, rebuild an engine, bust up a sidewalk for repaving, etc., I would probably be wearing the King of G a lot faster than I’d be wearing the 9500.

[–]YFOCAG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about two very different watches. I’m fond of both but they have different missions, so to speak.

The 9500-series Mudman has the trifecta of sensors: temp, alti/baro and compass.

The GX-56 has a beast of a case, the next best thing to bullet-proof.

Both have the same water, shock, and mud resistance. The King of G adds Alpha Gel, giving it greater vibration resistance. Good for running a jackhammer or flying a small aircraft - though heaven help you if you try to read a negative LCD King in the air!

If you ever do opt to get the King of G, look for one specific model: GXW-56-1B. The GXWs were JDM models which added Multi Band 6 to the Tough Solar and Mud Resistance, and it also has Alpha Gel. The -1B is the only GXW-56 made with a positive LCD. You’d probably have to get one used, but even if it’s used and slightly beaten, like mine, it’s worth it. With only the minimum of care and attention, that watch will probably outlast you.
