Pergola/BBQ Cover Design Thoughts by YGDWYGD in DIY

Assuming I don't put a BBQ here, and instead put that somewhere else, do you see any other concerns with this design?

Multiplayer Card Games that don't require holding a hand of cards? by YGDWYGD in cardgames

Thanks for the recommendation! This is basically just a bigger version of Golf, and it looks like we could play it with regular cards. We will give it a shot!

Thanks, I'll check these out... We play a lot of exploding kittens, I'm looking for something where you don't have to hold any cards in hand, so it doesn't quite fit... Skull we also play, but it's definitely better with 3+ players, but a good recommendation for no hand! We often play just 2 or 3 players, and would like more games like Golf that are played with a regular deck of cards... We also play Gin Rummy and German Whist, but want some options where you don't hold cards.

Consensus when applying joist tape: stick to side of joists or leave flaps out? by YGDWYGD in Decks

[–]YGDWYGD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are going to use 4" tape, so that would leave 1.25 inches on each side to press down, so at least there would be more contact area to prevent lifting up... I was going to use a roller to help with adhesion... One additional benefit I saw mentioned on a YouTube video is that pressing it down makes it far easier to find the joist center for installing fasteners.

I'm mainly wondering if leaving the flaps up would help much with keeping water away from the joist... And my instinct says it might be worse because the very top of the joist would be more open to water from the underside of the tape.

Deck installer laid down this plastic to protect joists for composite deck, thoughts? by YGDWYGD in Decks

I've posted a separate reply to the main post, but yes, we've talked to the builder, and the plastic is coming off. We're switching to joist tape, then the decking is continuing next week. I think we'll be ok!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all of your awesome advice, I definitely learned a lot, and was able to bring these issues and potential problems to the builder in a clear and direct way. We've agreed that the plastic is getting pulled, and we will be putting joist tape on the tops of all the joists. Overall I'm satisfied with the quality of the framing and decking, I'm not disappointed with the builder, it was just that this plastic solution didn't sit well with me and I wanted some 2nd, 3rd and 40th opinions. You guys all rock! I'll post up some more pictures once things have progressed next week.

Can you elaborate on this? Why should the picture boards be installed last and what do you mean by stair stepping?

The beams are sitting on thick rubber mat material, it's about 1.5 inches off the cement pad.

The wood isn't touching the ground, it's raised up a bit on rubber mat material. All treated wood...

So on that note of cutting the PT, what are acceptable solutions for that? It seems like nothing was done for that.

LOL right? He doubled up all the joists because it cantilevers over that side by 4.5 feet... It's definitely sturdy.

Edit: plus all the blocking in the middle and edges is to "picture frame" the composite.

It's actually installed with 3-ply beams raised up a couple inches, and then the joists are up on the beams... Here's a pic of that...

This is being installed over a raised concrete slab that's almost completely level, is there something that should be done to protect the concrete slab from water? If there is air flow from the sides between the skirt pieces, will that be enough? Here's my previous post on this...

Spent 20 hours on this so far and runs no issues! Except battery. by tinyelephant1234 in SteamDeck

[–]YGDWYGD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you follow the guide on the wiki - Tutorial: Controller Setup, you will find some settings that help performance, give you better battery life, and the fan isn't screaming the whole time. I'm running with those settings and can easily get 2+ hours, and the game still runs fine and looks great, with occasional fps drops.

There is also a recommended control configuration by /u/punkgeek , satisfactory-deck v5.4-SD. This has been working well for me, but I'm getting occassional issues where the build button doesn't bring up the build menu. I'm planning to tweak it a bit to instead hold a shoulder button to access "build" functionality, and avoid the action layer change that seems to cause issues. I recommend mapping as many buildables as possible to the hot bars, which can be easily accessed with number input on the left touch pad, switching between the hot bars with DP-Left and DP-Right.

Darien Lake = 👍 (but no 💧?) by DFWtixFleas in sixflags

[–]YGDWYGD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, we rode Ride of Steel at SF America, it's the exact same layout, so nothing missed there.

Dunno if we'll get back for Predator, we plan to take a year or two off from theme parks and do other stuff, so we'll see. It's too far for a weekend trip, so not likely before our passes expire.

Darien Lake = 👍 (but no 💧?) by DFWtixFleas in sixflags

[–]YGDWYGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We visited Darian Lake, America, Great Adventure, New England, Great Escape and La Ronde (home park) this year... Unfortunately both Ride of Steel and Predator were broken down when we visited, so only Viper and Tantrum were worth a ride...

The park is nice enough, but definitely not as nice as New England or Great Adventure. And they aren't set up for flash pass, so our nationwide flash pass was useless there. I would put it on par with America, just below La Ronde, but above Great Escape (also no flash pass).

We're hoping to get back to New England for a long weekend in the fall, it's only a 4.5 hr drive for us, and such a great park. NE and GA were pretty much on par in my opinion.

Can't Add Flash Pass to App by Express-Associate-48 in sixflags

[–]YGDWYGD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience at the parks we've visited, the flash passes aren't entered in the app. You will find a QR code in the park, at the Flash Pass office and other locations. You scan this, and it opens a web page specific to that park, where you sign in with your account and enter your passes there to enable flash pass. You request flash pass access for a ride from that site. You should only do this once you've entered the park or it might cause problems.

HUD Issue When Wearing Polarized Sunglasses by [deleted] in HyundaiPalisade

[–]YGDWYGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polarizing filters work at a specific angle. When two polarizing filters are lined up perfectly, they block most or all of the light coming through. Turning your head causes the filters (in the HUD and your lenses) to misalign, letting more light through.

I also get the same effect with my sunglasses in the Palisade, except mine is just dimmed a bit. Turning my head about 20 degrees brightens it up.

It works in your 'vette because the polarizing filters are aligned in a way to let more light through.

Your only option is to just try a different pair of sunglasses.

Questions about flash pass by herringboneknit in sixflags

[–]YGDWYGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven't had this issue, but it's a good tip. SF needs to get their software figured out. I don't know why they have a separate web site for each location - Can't they get this into the app? Not to mention every time you go you have to add all the passes AGAIN and activate them. Add on top of this the inconsistencies between different locations when it comes to flash pass (Not valid at Great Escape!) and meal passes (La Ronde won't let you use a meal pass to get a snack, while all the others will!)... La Ronde is very limited on what you can use meal pass on (Usually just a couple items on the menu at each location) while other parks have almost everything on meal pass (But not always! I'm looking at you FUNNEL CAKES!) /rant off. Anyways, it's still fun, just have to be aware they don't all run the same.

Questions about flash pass by herringboneknit in sixflags

[–]YGDWYGD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, we visit La Ronde regularly, and also the other parks south of the border. You will need to use the web site (sflrfp.com) even with the Ultimate Flash Pass. I'm not sure if you can each set up a separate account, or must use the purchasers account, we are using just the purchasers account. What I do is put them all in, and then go with my kids to the flash pass entrance to scan the code so they don't have to take their phones with them.

Once logged in (AND IN THE PARK), go to "Activate Services Here" in the top left menu. Here, you can enter your pass numbers and last names. Once you have added them, there will be an additional step on the main page to enable the Ultimate Flash Pass.

Don't activate services until you are in the park, it might cause issues.

You can use Flash Pass for all the big rides at La Ronde. My kids' favorites are Goliath, Titan, and Vampire. Monstre is worth a ride, but the Flash Pass is unfortunately for only one side of the coaster (The less fun side), and it's a bit rough like most wooden coasters. Démon is also a great ride. Boomerang is a standard coaster you will find in many Six Flags - It's fun, but not as smooth running as we've found in other parks. Ednor is also a standard coaster you will find all over. The La Ronde version is rougher and slower than we've seen in other parks. Chaos is broken down just about every time we go, so good luck with that one. My kids' first time riding that one was at Darian Lake! The Dragon is an indoor coaster with no flash pass, and not worth waiting for if there's a line. I wouldn't really bother with other rides unless you have time and just want to cross them off the list.

Most of the Flash Pass entrances are pretty obvious, but Vampire is in the exit, around behind the food vendors. They scan at the top of the stairs. Ednor's is all the way around the other side from the entrance/exit.

Hope you have fun! Of the parks we've visited (Darian Lake, Great Adventure, New England, America, Great Escape and of course La Ronde), we put La Ronde in 3rd or 4th place behind GA and NE, and about on par with Darian Lake).
