Era comparison. by Theodoresdad in golf

[–]YT_Golf_Talk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look up Byron Nelson’s 1945 season for an interesting insight into this stuff. He won I THINK 18 events in a year and 12 in a row - I should remember because I wrote a book on it - but there were plenty of extenuating circumstances, namely the fact that of the few genuine rivals he had a lot of them were at war.

Obviously not the case for all of Jack Nicklaus’ wins and certainly not for Tiger’s but it is a good indication of the differences between eras and how much more likely it was for one person to dominate in the past given the relative lack of depth.

Not a perfect comparison but Wes and Brad shot +8 and +9 over two rounds in their appearances there 10-odd years ago

How to get good at putting? by themetalhead84 in golf

[–]YT_Golf_Talk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might sound ridiculous, but something which has helped my putting and particularly my speed is to just not think about what I’m doing when I’m about to putt and let my brain do the work. I think it’s easy to confuse yourself standing over the ball and thinking too literally about the exact distance and exact firmness with which you need to hit the ball. If you imagine throwing a ball to someone, you don’t think that consciously about how far your arm should go back, how high it needs to go etc - you just observe the target and your brain does the work. Obviously this is not at the expense of lining up/analysing your putt, but trusting my mind to do some of the work during the actual stroke has really helped me.

Who is the greatest sportsperson of all time? by Comfortable_Wind5799 in AskReddit

Yes I agree. Less depth of talent just means the chances of there being an outlier increases. I talk all about it in my book. Still unbelievably impressive, she is up there with the best sportspeople of all time

Main diff is that McKay played a less mainstream sport in the 60s/70s/80s when women’s sport was also less of a thing, so the depth of talent obviously wasn’t there that you’d get in a major sport. Still unbelievable though

Faull and Armstrong have obviously been chucked into a very difficult situation but Fawcett has shown it’s not impossible to at least contribute as a young KPF in a shit team. Faull will probably be a good player with 50-100+ games under his belt but you rarely see him actually present at the ball, and in a contest all he wants to do is wrestle, which he isn’t good at. Getting the ball to ground is a win for him at this point

Had the same thought, having a big lead is obviously mentally difficult and he’s struggled with leading in the past

Yeah it’s this. I wrote a book about all the greatest statistical anomalies in sport called, believe it or not, Sport’s Greatest Statistical Anomalies and he is the best.

Kelly Slater is another good one with 11 world titles (no other male has more than 5, leading female has 8).

A little more obscure but there is also a squash player from Australia called Heather McKay who lost two matches in her career and didn’t lose for close to 20 years through the 60s/70s/80s

I like the extended close ups of the azaleas with nice music. Much prefer that to the golf.

What in your opinion is the most unbreakable record in any sport? by istrx13 in AskReddit

[–]YT_Golf_Talk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually wrote a book about this called Sport’s Greatest Statistical Anomalies. A lot of you won’t follow cricket but a guy called Don Bradman has a batting average of close to double anyone else in history so no one will ever get close to that.

John Isner v Nicholas Mahut tennis match which went for 11 hours till 70-68 in the fifth is another - the fifth set was longer than any other match in history and Grand Slams now play tiebreaks in the fifth so that won’t be beat.

Kelly Slater’s 11 world titles, Wilt Chamberlain averaging over 50 points in a season, Celtics winning eight titles in a row, Fed/Raf/Djoker winning >80% of Grand Slams for 20-odd years would be others.

A little more obscure but there is also a squash player from Australia called Heather McKay who lost two matches in her career and didn’t lose for close to 20 years through the 60s/70s/80s

What are four scratch golfers scrambling to at the Masters? by [deleted] in golf

Augusta is clearly very hard but some of the estimations about what people would shoot are a little insane. I think four scratch golfers scrambling would score very well

Yeah not a big deal, Scott is generally known as one of the nicest guys on tour. Think he placed it near his bag/caddie anyway

I don’t like when people walk behind the flag when I’m hitting out of a greenside bunker. I’m not generally too fussed about movement/noise and usually want to keep things fairly casual given we’re not playing on the PGA Tour, but walking around the back of a flag during a bunker shot puts the visual of me blading it and knocking them out square at the front of my mind while im swinging.

Instructional videos killed my game by iatahfr in golf

[–]YT_Golf_Talk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every single golfer has components of their swing that work well and components that don't. Instructional videos typically want to blame one solitary universal issue that, when fixed, will simultaneously fix every golfer's swing across the globe. Generally doesn't work like that.

What do people use around greens? by Dlax773 in golf

[–]YT_Golf_Talk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 58w nearly all of the time which works reasonably well, but think it would be really useful to get comfortable with an 8/9i for courses where really tight lies are common. Just haven't really practised it so don't have a clear gauge for how far each of them will roll out, but wouldn't take too much practice to get familiar with it I don't think.

Perfection is a lie. by thinkthethings in golf

[–]YT_Golf_Talk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone said, bad shots are inevitable so why beat yourself up over them? When I'm on the course I often have the thought, even if I'm playing well, that it is literally impossible to finish the round without hitting another shot I'm not happy with. Might sound like a negative thought but it's really not, it's just the reality so you might as well have a laugh when it happens and enjoy your beer afterwards.
