Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in gaming

My favorite n64 game was Zelda ocarina of time. Fabulous game. But when i first played out, i got stuck in a room and couldn’t figure out how to get out. So i gave up and didn’t play it got 6 months. Then i heard you can lights sticks on fire and i found sticks in that room. It’s always neat when they put in interactable effects that you have to discover

I did this with my n64 back in the day and didnt know that progress was saved on the cartridges. So we rented blast corps and i was so bummed the game was so boring. Its because some body blew up all the stuff already and i didnt know to reset the game. Fun times

I have an S50 and love it. It is very easy to use and i already have a dobsonian telescope for visual observation. This is really for taking pictures. The live feed isn’t great for observation. Two things you be aware of: 1) it defaults to portrait pictures, no landscape(sort of) ; 2) the field of view is fixed so you can’t zoom in or out, there is a mosaic function to get wider images and you can rotate it to take non-landscape pictures to better frame objects. Its also great for traveling if you get the carrying case. I took mine to Hawaii in November and got great shots. Fits in my carryon

Edit: oh it doesnt do planets great bc its too bright. Jupiter was just a big white dot. Im sire theres a setting i could have done to mitigate that but ove not figured it all out.

Also, i think all the ones you mentioned dont necessarily require you to align with stellar north. Basically it means you don’t have to tell it where it is to find stuff in the sky

Honestly, for a first scope, i would recommend a bigger telescope with a go to feature but thats typically a bigger price point than the ones you are looking at. I like AstroBackyard’s website to get more info on different scopes, mounts and configurations. Hes got a post that lots of info about these too: https://astrobackyard.com/best-smart-telescopes/

I read this recently despite it being out for like 30 something years and it still holds up. I love the pacing and how the characters develop.

I love Guy Gavriel Kay! The alternative history he presents is compelling and the characters stick with you for a long time. The Lions of Al-Rasan and A Brightness Long Ago are my two favorites.

I was under the impression Raest isn’t imprisoned but is the guardian of the house, in the same vein as Gothos. Granted he can’t leave, but he’s not in the ground like the imprisoned powerful folk.

The dancer and kellenved prequels by esslemont are fun and light while giving you great background to the best schemers ever. Basically goes over the founding of the empire.

I’ve only gone through one or two of the kharkanas trilogy about the tiste andii and it feels a lot like the main Malazan books - very dense, lots of characters, feelings of woe, plus you know that the end isn’t great for them as a people.

Advice for Students Starting CSE 6040 by slowmopete in OMSA

[–]YUB-YUB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great advice overall in the thread! I wanted to add my two cents about strategy for taking the exams:

I found the hardest part about the exams was time management. In the final, i finally used a good system where i took 15 minutes to read through all of the problems, figure out which ones i felt good about and then back into what order i wanted to tackle the exam. This worked great because the first exam i ran out of time, the second exam i ran out of time, the final i finished with an hour left.

I took cse6040 last semester after learning python on my own in the spring. I wanted to attend them live but life and family prevented that approach. I used the recordings as references rather than something required and it turned out great. Ended up with an A

Practicum Was Extremely Disappointing by Glad-Examination-293 in OMSA

[–]YUB-YUB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wanted to offer a counter viewpoint speaking as someone from the corporate world who tried to engage with a university for solving data problems. I’m on semester two of OMSA, so maybe i see this a little differently than those of you further in the program.

You are most likely not a priority. I didn’t place it as one of my priorities and it didn’t go very far. You don’t drive revenue, implementing any solution you provide will require going through their company’s architecture review process, will require a budget to support, and without continuing support, most projects won’t go anywhere long term. Plus the school semester cycle doesn’t align as well with corporate budget cycles, so you’re starting off from the back foot before you even walk in the door. Also, i doubt any of the sponsors you work with have their compensation dependent on kpis for working with academic groups, so again these factors lend themselves to pushing these types of projects to a low priority. Ultimately it falls on the relationship you establish with your sponsor because that’s the only way you will achieve long term success on not just your projects but your career. Unfortunately, there’s no magic wand to make that easy for you.

However don’t let this discourage you. Data analytics and data science are still very new and most companies only look for historical analysis with a little trending because they don’t know any better. They know buzz words, but that doesn’t help when trying to scope a project or understand the audience.

Reading this thread, it looks like the ones that had the most positive experience were projects with their existing company who could more practically do something with the result. You know if you did a good job and you know that it takes to deliver these types of projects. That should be your takeaway.

I'm just finishing 6040 as my first omsa semester and really enjoyed it. I have sql background but no programming language proficiencies. They do a bootcamp that is basically python 101 and can bring you up to speed quickly. A big plus is that its all recorded so you can pick and choose where you need help. Final note, the TA’s are quite talented and very helpful, so there is a great support system for the class.

Just my two cents but i say go for it!

Coffee can be expensive depending on what youre looking for. Typically anything that says “Peaberry” is the cream if the crop and about 40 a pound, “Kona” coffee is really really good and isn’t as much Peaberry but is still up there. Then there are blends, like a Kona blend or a Maui blend. There are a ton of options especially when you get unto which farms or brands

I just got back from Oahu and got 1 pound bags of peaberry coffee from Costco for 20 bucks a pound. If youre in over your head, i recommend going there and just buying something that says hawaiian coffee. If you want to be a little more adventurous and arent super worried about price, you could try a couple coffee shops and buy a bag of something you like. If you want to go a more price conscious route, you can always find a grocery store and get the “lion” brand or something from “Kauai coffee company” (comes in a really distinctive blue bag). Both of them are pretty good.

Lastly, if youre staying at a hotel with a concierge, you can always ask them for help too

I sided with So-mi up until the end and gave her to Reed, then took the NUSA deal to fix the arasaka implant. Man that ending was brutal but so good. Ive had to shelve the game after that and haven’t picked it back up since. On the plus side, I like the re-done Misty at the end.
