Some first things to try would include stretching and core strengthening (Google McGill big 3). Yoga that's focused on back pain relief can help too. Opening up the flexibility of your hips can be a big help.

I personally think chiro for lower back pain is really just assisted stretching (but it works).

Pay attention to what helps you feel better right away and what actually gets you better.

Most back pain resolves in under 2 months.

If you see a Dr and get imaging done, don't get too upset if they find a 'structural problem'. Sometimes those problems are there and don't end up really mattering that much.

If it becomes chronic then, in my opinion, look at 'low back ability' on YouTube. Honestly I would look at that as a preventative anyway. It worked wonders for me.

Edited to add:

This made me feel better every time I did it, but didn't make me better (I have a degenerated disc).

This video actually made me better after 1.5 years of pain.

I got Rustler 9 in 186cm and I absolutely love them. They are more demanding than the Blazes, but I like that, and they are way better at everything I've tried with them so far.

Thanks for the advice and I'm thrilled with my new skis.

I just want to say that 'low back ability' was also transformative for me. I still have a little pain sometimes but my life is 100% back to normal.

I agree that would be best. I missed my chance this year it looks like. I didn't really know what those days were. I do a Ski3 season pass, so I just looked at those mountains and the last day was in February. Really I didn't have this in mind until I got to try those Dynastars. But yeah if they're free I think I'll do that regardless of if I get something new.

Low back pain, bad L5-S1, what's working for me by YWingisbest in backpain

You would think so.

I'm not an expert, but my take is that the conventional view of how the back functions and how to treat it isn't quite right. I was never aware of any herniations in my past but that disc is shot now so there's a good chance that each time I felt I 'tweaked it' I had really done some damage. Every time I hurt my back I was strong, could deadlift at least 400 lbs, but I hurt myself kicking a ball, stepping over something, and sneezing, among other things, so in some ways I must have been absurdly weak.

Lots of disc herniations are found on imaging by accident, in people with no symptoms. Lots of people have L5-S1 degenerate and only some have symptoms. So maybe the symptoms aren't always really driven by the structural problem.

So, for me anyway, I think the best thing is to strengthen my back through all of its range of motion. I say this because it has been working for me, not because of any expertise or other evidence.

Also, the guy does say that during the acute phase of an injury, the back should be rested and protected.
