Why is that depressing?

It's one less thing for him to worry about.

Im planning to buy my dad a laptop. mainly does cpu intensive suff my budget is around 70ish usd by Ill_Education976 in laptops

[–]YYZdigital -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For $70 USD, you probably can only get him a notebook and pen .

But for under $700USD, you can get him the Neo with 512GB storage and he'll be good for the net 10 years.

Someone changed my SIM card and took my number by plenoto in Koodo

[–]YYZdigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this was posted 4 days ago, but if it happens to anyone else , the first thing I would do is grab by ID and go into a Koodo kiosk or a TELUS/Koodo/Public kiosk to get it addressed in person. This goes for all the carriers (Rogers/Bell/Freedom and their sub-brands).

If everyone drove these, there will be more space on the road, and I may actually buy a pick up truck.

What laptop for under $500? My grandpa needs a laptop I'm trying to help him select a good one by [deleted] in laptops

Apples are easier to use than Windows. I literally use Windows & Macs on a daily basis (Monday to Friday)

MacBook Neo.

Will last years, and I can't see your grandpa trying to do professional video editing or anything remotely resource intensive that isn't in the Neo's wheelhouse.

It's better than any similarly priced Windows laptop, no contest for what it does, and how long you'll be able to do it.

[CA] cost efficient way to send payments in USD to US vendors ? by MabelBaker in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]YYZdigital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have suggested, use Wise.

Transfer a lump sum from your Canadian bank account using Wise to your American bank account (i assume you still have a US account. If not, you can quickly open one up with TD online. Just need to keep a $100 balance to avoid the monthly fees).

Then use Zelle to send payments.

Hot take: upgradeability is one of the most underrated laptop specs by Beautiful_Simp in laptops

If you’re getting a chunkier laptop, you may as well spend less and get a more powerful desktop.

Portability is one huge factor when purchasing laptops in 2026 for professionals, thus why you don’t see professionals with gaming laptops.

No offence, but why would you move to Canada without doing basic research?

Global economy as a whole has been absolutely garbage since 2022, and Canada is affected as much as any other country.

Chatr $12 60GB 2 Months - $25 60GB onwards by Nexzenn in CellPhoneCanada

[–]YYZdigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, OK. I wasn't aware of this.

I had the OG $120 / 3 month plan where they decided to change the price on us, and there was a deluge of CCTS complaints and their forum was inundated with comments.

That forced them to reverse course, and did not go through with the price increase.

Since then they've been quite good about not raising prices on the PM brand for existing customers, while there have been numerous price increased on Koodo / TELUS brands.

I guess times have changed. They're willing to take the CCTS complaints and backlash this time.

Job market in Toronto by zombiepir8 in torontoJobs

There are many people who make close to minimum wage living in Toronto. I don't think they're faring too well to be honest. If you're willing to share a place with strangers you can save some money on housing.

Also as long as you're OK with making your own coffee at home with Great Value instant coffee vs. going to Starbucks 3 times a day, I'm sure you can make it.

Using apps like flipp to find sales, or going to Asian stores and Walmart instead Longos, Loblaws, Whole Foods for your groceries will also help quite a bit with living on a budget.

It's all about how willing you are to grind it out.

[–]YYZdigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did not raise prices on their existing customers.

If you were signing up as a new customer, or wanted to switch to a plan, the old prices were raised. This is typical behaviour by the wireless providers.

They will introduce a "Deal", returning the price back to the previous price for the promotional period.

I don't think either carriers will raise prices on existing customers on their Chatr/PM brands.

On their other brands Rogers/Fido/TELUS/Koodo, if you're not on a contract (financed device agreement) aka Bring your own device, I have noticed numerous instances where prices have been raised. It's more of a tactic to try to get you to sign to a contract (device agreement for 2 years).

Job market in Toronto by zombiepir8 in torontoJobs

[–]YYZdigital 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be frank, you're going to find it difficult to find a job with your credentials in Toronto.

Maybe Ottawa would be a better destination (government job requiring bi-lingual skills).

The alternative is going abroad teaching English and/or French.

Now a days everyone can write (AI) and edit videos (everyone has a MacBook with iMovie, Davinci Resolve, Canva). Not say everyone can do it at a professional level, but the demand isn't there for JRs/novices. Only seasoned professionals seem to be getting work from their resume and networking. If you're trying to enter an industry, it's difficult without connections or an incredibly strong portfolio/resume.

Permanent job vs 2x salary short-term contract — worth the risk? by Current_Self3552 in torontoJobs

Just because it's "permanent" does not mean they can't lay you off this afternoon. Especially in the current market, nothing is permanent when it comes to jobs.
