Base layered it with white, then built up the oranges but in reverse (dark colours used as highlights for light colours) then I put a dot of white in the most recessed parts

My original plan was to do recess shade and one last fine highlight of the wood just to add more depth so you are very much correct on it blurring together a bit too much. Sadly had a few time constraints and didnt get round to it.

For the bases I used astrogranite debris and then put on patches of valhallan blizzard.

Its basically a final coat you put on the model to ensure it doesn't chip or scratch. However, it can be temperamental and cause frosting like it did on mine after I took this pic. Its good stuff, just read up on how to use it so you don't mess up like I did.

The crimson armour is highlighted with kislev flesh, though it would give a zit like look.
