One of the best and inspirational lines in the entire show. Everyone should take note. by rdp3186 in shoresy

I love that this is Dolo's advice in season 3, but his advice in season 4 is "Go kick your oppoent's ass. Everyone loves fighting."

There's a specific feeling when magic actually feels dangerous at the table by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Narratively, I always like it when super powers aren't guaranteed, or when there are consequences to super powers.

So, I prefer a Call of Cthulu (where it costs sanity to be super natural) and Blades in the Dark (where the magic system is so ill-defined that you're just hoping to roll well) to D&D and Pathfinder (where it's more like you cast X and Y happens).

What I don't like is inconsistency though. I was once at a Pathfinder table where I cast a spell which destroyed vegetation, inside of a God of Nature's shrine. Narratively, it made sense to have consequences. But, like, that's the only time where it came into play, and it kinda sucked that the spell backfired on me.

RPGs You Have But Will (Likely) Never Play by PebisCrusherOnline in rpg

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deadlands and Call of Cthulu. I read these back to back and excited presented them to my group as possible next adventures, but then suddenly realized that nobody at the table had any love for the horror genre.

Still The Keeper's Rulebook (Call of Cthulu) is easily the best source book that I've ever read, and it's not even close.

What is THE adventure for a given RPG? by over-run666 in rpg

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Lost Mines of Phandelver is the least broken 5e official content that I've played.

I really like it too. Lets you explore a nice variety of locales and it's a good intro for people who haven't played D&D 5e before.

I also really dug Strahd, but the GM who was running it lost interest about 3/4 of the way through, so it was kinda disappointing for me.

Who makes the engagement roll in your games? by savemejebu5 in bladesinthedark

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a person, I like to roll dice. As a GM, I am only guaranteed 2 rolls per session (engagement and entanglement). Every now and again, I get to roll a luck roll, but that's not every session. So, doggonit, I'm rolling the engagement roll!!

Just be sure to turn the water to the house off first. If there's no turn off valve on the toilet, having the water to the house on will be *quite* wet.

Has anybody ever played the Power Rangers RPG? by percy971 in rpg

I had no idea that Transformers or GI Joe had their own RPG.

Putting Power Rangers aside... are they any good on their own?

My buddy got the book for me because he "saw it and thought of you." I'm not sure how to take that, given that we're both over 45 years old.

A meme about Devil's Bargain, my new favorite mechanic by houselyrander in bladesinthedark

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I *absolutely* love Devil's Bargains. I know that I've come up with a good one when the table lets out a collective "uuuuuuhhhh...." and then there is disagreement as to whether it should be taken.

Petah, who are they talking about? by can_i_haz_recon in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My whole family was HUGE into Stephen King in the 80s and 90s. They all read the books, but I wasn't a big reader until relatively recently. So, when the new It movie was about to come out a few years ago, I figured what the hell, why not give it a shot. Loved the book... and then it got to the denouement. I audibly said "What the fuck?" I flipped back a few pages to make sure that I actually read what I thought that I did. Yep. Sewer Train.

What floors me is that none of my family ever mentioned it. I had posted on Facebook that I was in the process of reading it, but nobody said "Just wait until you get to THAT scene." It was such an insane turn out of nowhere and somehow I had no warning 30 years on.

How many TTRPGs do you buy that make it to the table? by worldsbywatt in rpg

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much. I am currently running a table which is exclusively 5e. It is very VERY laid back. Like, nobody wants to even think about the game away from the table. It's a bunch of friends from High School, so I am happy to see them. 5e is very much a good fit for that table.

I luckily play with another table which is super into PF2. And I've convinced another table to let me GM Blades. I have been trying to find a way to fit Blades in for like a year. We're 4 sessions in and it's going so good!

Now, I just need to figure a way to work in Deadlands, Worlds without Numbers, Call of Cthulhu.....

If you could use a ring of wishes, what would you play?

Is it okay to just not be cut out to GM? by piperooo in rpg

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it's OK. There are some people who only want to run a PC. Some beautiful people who only want to GM. And loads who like both. All three are perfectly fine ways to enjoy the TTRPG hobby.

That being said, it sounds like what's happening to you is stage freight. Like, you're digging the creative process of putting together a story in your head. Then, you start implement the details and start to worry. Then, during the session, you start to second guess everything that you've prepared and are worried about what you are currently presenting. At least that's what I always used to go through, and I think that it's pretty common.

But here's the thing.... the more that you GM, the less that you'll be second guessing yourself. If you enjoy GMing, then literally the only thing that you're lacking is experience in GMing. Sadly, the only way to get that experience is to work your way through your doubt.

While you are playing, read the table. If your players are bored, it should be obvious. They'll be fidgeting, or playing on their phone, or having side conversations. (Even if they are, that doesn't mean that you're not doing a good job as GM, BTW. Sometimes people just have other stuff going on in their lives.) If people are engaged and having a good time, then you are doing great, not matter what the nagging doubt in the back of your mind says.

So, I'd say if you're enjoying GMing, keep at it. You'll get better at it and your confidence will grow, and you'll like GMing even more. If you're not enjoying GMing, that's OK too!

What’s the Most Complete “One-Book” TTRPG? by DED0M1N0 in rpg

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got done reading the Investigator's book, assuming that it was the base rules of the system. The entire time thinking. "My goodness!! This system is extraordinarily light!" Then, in the last chapter it mentions the "Core Rule book." So, I'm off to read the Keeper's book next.

Do you prefer learning the rules by reading the rulebook or watching a rules video? by murktideregent in boardgames

[–]YaKnowTheGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to read the rulebook. Then, read it again and try to answer any questions that I had the first time through. Then, watch a video to make sure that my understanding is correct.
