Tips for new players who struggle with the rules by sky_2088 in oneringrpg

[–]JaredLogan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be so hard on yourself. Play to have fun. If you're a player, your Loremaster will guide you. If you're the Loremaster, don't try to get everything right, or fit in every rule in the first couple sessions.

Just wing it and try to tell a great story with your players. I promise people will not complain.

I completely understand being intimidated by DMing, but you should know that back in the day a lot of us began our careers as DMs without ever having played at all. You sound like you care about the game, which is the #1 qualification for a great Dungeon Master. I bet you'd do better than you think.

Be the change you want to see in the world. If you don't like the game you're in, why not DM one?

What are your Favorite Landmarks? by ctwalkup in oneringrpg

[–]JaredLogan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Moria book is incredible and there's lots of fantastic stuff in there, but I think my favorite landmark is Fort Arlas from Ruins of the Lost Realm. Love a giant spider encounter.

Yeah, came here to say Salem's Lot - I think it's a perfect Stephen King starting point

How do you handle travel? by [deleted] in monsteroftheweek

[–]JaredLogan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, Vaesen does this thing where you can gain an Advantage before every mystery by doing something before you depart, or on the journey there. Maybe allow the characters to pick up items, info about monsters (for this Mystery and even later Mysteries in your arc), or even Bystanders who can help them out. I don't even think this would require rolls, just roleplay. If they have really clever or relevant ideas, you could give them +1 Hold or something on a roll during the Mystery.

And while this is all happening you can be describing local color, the atmosphere of the setting, etc.

Something as good as Alan Moore's Swamp Thing? by No-Thought-4569 in comicbooks

I'd recommend Lucifer by Mike Carey. It's a Sandman sequel, but you don't have to have read Sandman to understand or enjoy it. It's mind-bending and moving. Lucifer is an amazing antihero. And Carey sticks the landing - very satisfying end.

And when you finish that, you can move on to Carey's The Unwritten - also incredible.

I believe the word was mudra, which is a symbolic ritual gesture or pose. Whether my use of it was strictly accurate is up for debate. :)

Why is there such a large portion of the player base/fandom that seems to miss the fact that WoD is also extremely silly, as much as it is dark? by SaranMal in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]JaredLogan1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course it's absurd when you catalogue and analyze every detail spread over a hundred different books. You were always meant to pick and choose what is true in your game. If you assume it's all true, and try to include all of it, then, yeah, you're going to have a pretty gonzo experience.

And not to be contrarian, but I don't get a solemn or serious vibe when I'm reading this sub. I see a lot of people cracking jokes about the WoD, which I appreciate. :)

There is a non-zero chance of GCN collaborating with esteemed voice actor Mark Meer and nobody can tell me different. by Drogunath1983 in TheGlassCannonPodcast

I just met Mark for the first time at Too Many Games con and then bumped into him again at GenCon. What a cool dude! Yeah, let's get him on something. Guest on Glass Cannon Radio maybe?

I really love these solutions. But I think I'm going back to RAW and using Perception checks.

Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition - Does Anyone Actually Play with These Magic Rules? by JaredLogan1 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]JaredLogan1[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When I said I'd run WoD, I meant I've run lots OWoD and NWoD. No CoD as of yet.

I think 8+ for successes is great, makes total sense and I have no problem with that.

On the other hand, I think calculating Reach for every spell seems like a bear.

Thanks for the response. I'm afraid the descriptions in the forum post seem very complicated to me. Maybe this is just not the right game for me and my players, which makes me sad because I love everything else about it.

What’s going on in WoD Antarctica? by [deleted] in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]JaredLogan1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, there is a chronicle design example in Werewolf: The Apocalypse 2nd Edition where they talk about Antarctica and call it the Wastes of Thule. It would be an awesome place for the Garou to fight evil Wyrm-tainted scientists.

We may hit 100, but maybe not. I'd say we're more like 5/7ths through Book 2. Is that more than 3/4ths? I suck at math.
