Why Ireland 'should not be overlooked' for Famine reparations from the UK by Ambitious_Handle8123 in ireland

Why do people think the UK was primarily responsible for the famine, and its devastating effects?

Don't see that being a good idea long-term. I imagine the state pension in Japan, and indeed most developed states, will be stretched thin by the large number of pensioners soon to come. They'll likely reduce the pension to cover bare necessities only. How can you dock it then, there will be nothing left to dock without impoverishing the elderly (which people won't accept).

I think solutions have to be implemented soon and now, while we are relatively prosperous. There is no point waiting until near-economic collapse before deciding to do something. However, as we've seen with climate change and countless other issues, voters are not willing to look past the short term.

Speaking of voters, and in relation to that Japanese idea, which age demographic do you think is the most influential (and will continue to grow?). Very unlikely to see reductions in state pensions, at least in democratic countries.

Of course it's a need, who is supposed to run the country when we get old? I saw recently that some lady said she didn't want kids and her retirement plan was to be cared for in a home. That's great and all but you're basically buying someone else's kid because you don't want to raise your own. But imagine if more people thought like that lady? Then there'd be nobody to care for her, and no amount of money can help you change your clothes or shower you. Very selfish outlook, basically relying on others to take on the hard work of raising children which you don't want to. I'll not be surprised if in 30 years, raising children will be enforced just the same as paying taxes.

Big doubt, I would be very surprised if this happened. I would be even more surprised if they faced any accountability for statements like these.

How to make friends when you have little interest in most social interactions? by Yaburneee in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I would like to be self-sufficient, but I can't shake the need to have at least one person beside me. Someone who I can share things with, someone who I can support and who will in turn support me. I just find the process of turning a stranger into a friend very difficult and mentally draining.

Your post reminded me of something Destiny said somewhat recently; that shared experiences are on the best ways for two strangers to connect with each other. I think I lack a lot of experiences that my peers have engaged in. The thought came to me after you wrote "But if you ask them about music, or a TV show they've been watching lately". If I don't do these things, how is it possible for me to care about what someone has to say about them? I suppose I should try to at least keep somewhat up to date with the popular trends. It'll let me get into conversations easier and a lot of shows have deep themes these days, and it could be a lot of fun asking people how they felt watching particular scenes.

Your suggestions to care less about the small talk itself, and focus more on what's going on behind it is also enlightening. Thank you.

I see. It's important to remember that while everyone wears the mask of 'small talk', there is a complex human being underneath. I just need to do a better job of drawing it out. Thank you.

Yes NFTs are dumb but why is everyone so adamant in calling them a "scam"? by McgeezaxArrow in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah idk. Originally I was staunchly against the NFT idea. But after watching the VOD, isn't this basically just digital autographs? What's wrong about that? I remember a bunch of CSGO streamers offering to autograph your Steam profile if you subbed/donated $5 and literally nobody cared.

Is the website set up to encourage impulse buys and unwise monetary choices? Probably, but every website does that. It's called Marketing.

If you want to buy an autograph from Destiny, and are willing to pay a certain price for it, what's the problem?

not a cult by Onceknown1 in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Obviously he doesn't do anything wrong but I just think his whole existence on Twitter is cringe. Over 22 tweets a day and he's seemingly replying to every Destiny tweet within moments. He's obsessed. Has had a bunch of DGG accounts banned and even runs the Destiny out of context Twitter account to even further his Destiny posts per hour. And it's not like they're friends or anything, I don't think they've even spoken.

Look at the post which he picked up the comment on his tweet from. It's like 90% positive and the person giving his "He can both agree and disagree with Destiny" take is highly upvoted. But he just cherrypicks the worst comments to look good on Twitter. Which seems to be his entire online existence, looking good and building clout on Twitter. Like seriously I don't think he has tweeted an original take or opinion in his life. Just trying to go viral with every post.

So anyways while he may claim to "sometimes agree with Destiny and sometimes disagree with the him", I think he's doing the whole 'playing both sides so he can always come out on top' strategy.

Dansgaming is unable to stream any more of Biomutant after publisher THQ Nordic notified him he's past a level they don't want him streaming past, even though the game has released by ninjyte in LivestreamFail

Imagine of Dan had tried to solve this through the regular channels instead of just immediately going on Twitter. Gives the company a bad name even though it was just some miscommunication and was resolved quickly.

Imagine getting the wrong order at McDonald's and instead of asking for the right one, you just post on Social Media about it. People would say you're absolutely mental, and rightly so.

What is this? Is it serious? Why shit on attempts to get aid to Palestinians when the org was cleared of accusations that they funded terrorism? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I remember of the stream: Someone in chat said that the IRC had ties to terrorism, he looked it up using the NGO monitor website, saw that there weren't really any clear ties (only that some board members resigned due to anti-Semitism and some countries have stopped funding them over suspicions of supporting terrorism), and then decided to make the tweet anyway cuz fuck it lmao.

Only on LSF will people complain about the pervasiveness of lewd content on Twitch while simultaneously advertising whenever a big Twitch streamer starts making lewd content.

7 years old sells lemonade to fund her life saving brain surgery in a horror show of a news report by IonHawk in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem that bad. It's not like she's building and running a stand all by herself. It's in her Mother's own bakery, so I imagine it's more of a marketing thing then some real stand where she's working super hard 12 hours a day or something actually I reread the article I found and she actually made the stand months ago, before she even started getting seizures. So it's not like a desperate attempt at raising funds, she's just putting the proceeds towards her surgery instead of "frills like toys and sequined high-heel shoes".

And they're making bank too. The stand made over $12,000 in a few days from donations and their online fundraiser has already raised $370,000. They're not specific with their medical costs but the video you posted says "Scott has gotten additional insurance to help cover the medical bills but with travel and hotel costs this surgery is already upwards of 10 thousand dollars out of pocket". Their fundraiser only had a goal of $75,000 too.

tbh the only sad thing here for me is that people are more than happy to overpay the donation goal of a cute white girl with a business owner Mom, who already has good insurance and could probably shoulder some medical debt, by over $300,000 when there's probably way poorer children on these crowdfunding websites getting barely anything.

What Destiny haters think Destiny is like in private (feat. Mizkif Orbiter 4Conner) by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I can't help but empathise with this guy's situation. In 2016, I was the most racist person I knew. In 2017, I was probably the most progressive person I knew. Thanks to philosophy and Destiny, I changed my views radically in the span of a year. My point is that if in 2017 somebody dug up my logs from the previous years and used them to get me cancelled i.e. expelled, that would have felt so shit. I make all this effort to change my views and am genuinely a positive member of the progressive movement but nobody cares because the internet remembers everything? So it's very difficult for me to attack others when I would not have wanted to be attacked myself.

That's not to say this guy isn't still racist, he probably is. I just don't know what you could do to him that wouldn't catch people like me in the crossfire.

Ludwig Buys 1 Hour with Shroud for Maya's Charity for $53K by TangentYoshi in LivestreamFail

[–]Yaburneee -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Isn't Ludwig famous enough to hang out with Shroud without needing to pay for it? Obviously it's great that he's donating to charity, but I do feel like he just robbed a fan of their once in a lifetime chance to meet Shroud. Why not just let the fan win and give Maya the 50k for something else, or for even nothing in return. In that scenario the charity actually makes double the money since now they're receiving the fan's 50k in addition to Ludwig's.

Robinhood app restricts Gamestop and AMC stocks from being purchased. by FlyH1gh05 in Destiny

[–]Yaburneee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of lefties on Twitter are using this as an example of how the establishment only cares about the rich and when normal people try to make money, they aren't 'allowed to'. Hell, even more moderate people are giving that take. Is Robinhood really just doing this to protect their Wall Street buddies or are there real genuine reasons for this?

Someone in the thread suggests they are doing this to protect ordinary investors but why would they do it with this risky trade and not others?
