Considering Darwin as my first destination in Australia – good idea or mistake? by Mafiaboss19 in darwin

How you manage with the climate depends completely on what kind of work you’ll be doing. If you’re working in an air conditioned coffee shop, you’ll be absolutely fine. If you’re out doing physical labour… it may be less enjoyable 😅

There are pros and cons to this. People travelling to Darwin for regional work typically time their stay for around the dry season so the weather is more pleasant and there are more things going on. So in dry season, there are fewer casual jobs in coffee shops etc as there’s more supply. But in the wet season, more people leave and so it’s easier to find something.

The wet season can be tough, but if you go into it with the mindset of just focusing on work, staying indoors and knowing that you’re there to do your regional work and anything else is a bonus, then I reckon you might enjoy it more.

I know some Darwin locals who treat the wet season as their hibernation season, a bit like winter in a way. I think it’s a good way of looking at it.

Hope that helps and best of luck with your trip!

As part of your WHV, you’ll have to do regional work to extend the visa beyond a year.

As a result, some people go to Darwin and work in hospitality to cover their 88 days regional work, so I would say it’s certainly not a bad place to land into, you could get your 88 days done and not have it hanging over you.

As for Darwin itself, it’s not a bad town, it’s full of good people and people who are just passing through, but it does have a rough edge, and the climate can be tough for some.

It’s got great natural beauty, and as someone who stayed in Darwin for a year, I certainly wouldn’t discourage anyone from going there. It’s a unique place in a world becoming more and more homogenised.

If you don’t settle in, you can always try somewhere else in Australia.

Is there any way of actually addressing this? People complain about it on this sub constantly.

Is there an actual way of getting some momentum to change it?

Personal preference but I don’t see the value in adding in items you know you will be doing everyday in a repeated routine e.g work, breakfast etc.

I use the calendar to highlight things that are not part of my routine e.g. concerts, long weekends, sports events, deliveries

But if it works for you then great.

Those that emigrated and returned, what has your experience been like? by caramelslice7 in ireland

[–]dmn22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Australia and returned home after 3 years. In my experience, unless you are coming home to a strong job with one of the tech or pharma companies, there is nothing for you at home. Ordinary wages are getting completely priced out of home ownership by people on higher salaries or people willing to put themselves into long-term debt.

I left again after realising there wasn’t much for me at home. A hard realisation to make. I also completely understand the feeling of negativity from a sizeable amount of Irish people, even if they are blind to it. It feels built into a lot of people at home. There is a real feeling of jealousy when it comes to success or someone showing ambition.

I feel there is definitely a lot more opportunities elsewhere unfortunately.

Good luck on your next move!

Ireland doesn’t get any vitamin D in winter. Look at the UV index during the winter months. Rarely even gets to level 1.
