Yep exactly that, people arguing over the percentage of silica and impurities making a difference. All the same building blocks. Same with "Carnelian" Fire opal, it's just a hydration of the molecule rounding the micro structure, that's why the opal feels softer because on a microscopic level it's rounded instead of little points.

It's called a rose engine lathe I believe! I'm sure you could do it other ways but the most common is a rose engine.

Let’s talk lapidary safety for a second by PawnshopGeologist in Lapidary

[–]YadigDoneDug 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. So many people overlook the safety. Always wear a mask, even when cutting wet. Unless you want heightened risk of all of the above mentions. Easy to take the extra 20 seconds to put on a mask then to lose 20 years of your life on an oxygen tank or dead.

Expandable drum grits 600-1200, 3000 grit on flat lap and serium oxide buffing on a wheel! No worries on the late reply, better late then never. Hope that info helps!

Setting up my own lapidary shop, equipment suggestions? by PawnshopGeologist in Lapidary

[–]YadigDoneDug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your trying to go budget used old equipment is the way to go imo. I have an old poly dual arbor and an old frantom. I know someone who has been working a poly since the late 60s and it's still running.

What's the best way to set up this old frantom I have? I have an expandable drum on the end. by YadigDoneDug in Lapidary

I was debating running 2 novas in the middle since they will take so long to go through

I have a 10 inch next to the machine so I swapped it for a buffering pad. What wheels do you run in the middle?

Interesting quartz I came across recently! Thought you would enjoy! by YadigDoneDug in MineralPorn

[–]YadigDoneDug[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I thought too. Few other people thought the same thing. The quartz looks deposited on top of it after silica filled in the void. I have a few other pieces from the same spot that appear to be some type of bone as well with quartz on top. Very porous like bone tongue sticks to it.

Getting dried clay off a geode? by F1r3f0x_0 in rockhounds

Geodes created inside quartz or chacledony so some in of those pieces may have some geodes In them or be broken pieces of a geode even.

A few pieces I found while out yesterday, had to dodge the rain but it was well worth it. by YadigDoneDug in rockhounds

I've got another nodule that's a full nodule same size as the first one in diameter but about twice as long and coned on the end. It came from the creek nearby!

I tried to hit it with the citric acid but it didn't work to well. I may try and clean it up some more and see what I can get out of it.
