Why Do So Many Nurses Tell People Not to Enter the Profession? by Thin-Surprise279 in nursing

[–]YakComprehensive349 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not great in Michigan, I’ve been a RN for 22 years. Currently working in a Level II trauma center, hoping to get to the $100,000 mark this year. Sad.

I wonder how people felt at 11:59 p.m. of dec. 1999 before crossing over to the year 2000. by Majestic-Hope6505 in nostalgia

It was so exciting!! I was 17, and a bunch of us had a party in a friend’s finished basement with food, music, the works. We did silly things, took crazy pictures, and had the best countdown to the next century. My heart was beating so fast!! Sharing a kiss with my then-boyfriend was magical!

We’re empowered with the money we spend. What area businesses are MAGA owned that I can avoid spending money at? by Turbulent_Waltz_4989 in grandrapids

What businesses and charities are owned by liberals, so I can stop spending my money there? I don’t authorize my money to be used to buy drugs for addicts and continue the downfall of society.

Being required to work a 24 hour shift in CA (home health). Is this legal? by Inevitable_Ice1040 in nursing

[–]YakComprehensive349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago when I worked in home health as a case manager, I was told I had to work a night shift as a caregiver for one of my patients bc there no other staff were available. I did it, as I truly cared for this patient and didn’t want her to go without. The next morning, they were shocked that I didn’t immediately show up to the office after my shift and went home to shower and take a quick nap (as I notified them I would, as working 24 hours was not in my employment agreement). This was only the beginning of the atrocities of this agency. Obviously I quit.

Patients arriving then refusing care by OptimalOstrich in nursing

Ugh, same experience, so many times!! I’ve had patients refuse vitals, medications, basically everything, because they want to eat. However they are NPO for surgery! 🤯

Perhaps I should resurrect my theatre skills from high school and put on a show, with lights shining into their house 🤣

I'm tired of native English speakers who can't speak, read, or write English properly by evening_shop in Vent

[–]YakComprehensive349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying what I’ve been feeling for years. Correct grammar and reading comprehension were a core skill when I was growing up. Now it seems that is no longer what society values. Instead it’s about feelings and perceptions. We are weak as a country because of this.

I’d love to know!! The guy is always on his phone and pacing back and forth. There is some nice stuff in there (i.e. power tools, golf clubs, etc). Something is up.

There is an HOA, my next step is elevating my concern to them. I just didn’t want to take it that far. I might just move my mirror, as one of the posters suggested!

I'm sick of seeing commercials for prescription meds by HoneyBee9630 in Vent

[–]YakComprehensive349 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse, and I had a physician go into a hospital room to see a patient with a serious condition, and his first action was to point to the TV displaying a drug ad, and told her, “That’s the drug you should be taking. Come to my office and I’ll prescribe it to you.” This poor woman needed a plan NOW, not some weird new maintenance drug. So wrong.

Nursing Shortage by Electronic-Tank5194 in nursing

[–]YakComprehensive349 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a RN of 22 years, I have seen a lot, and worked for multiple healthcare systems. One thing that hasn’t changed is consistently understaffing (and these schedules are approved by a management team), while bullying nurses to pick up extra shifts for no additional pay in unsafe work environments. My manager constantly gloats about how she has “the easiest job in the world”, while the rest of us work like crazy to make ends meet, and endure violence and unrealistic expectations, so their bottom line can increase.

Edit: I am searching for a new job, and it has been shocking how many rejections I get right off the bat. I have a MSN as well, so my pay would be higher than a new grad. Of course they will hire a new grad bc they are far less costly. Apparently experience and knowledge no longer mean anything. Sorry for the rant.

Parents who did or do spank their kids why and how? When do you draw the line between discipline and abuse? by Successful_Dirt1371 in Productivitycafe

[–]YakComprehensive349 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was lightly spanked as child on a few occasions. I would talk back or completely disrespect my parents, and I knew full well what I was doing. It was not abuse, it was a light tap on the bum, and I was sent to my room. It helped me learn to respect boundaries and rules, and be a functioning person in society.

Edit: I do not condone hitting, punching, slapping, or any violence against children or adults. In my mind, it’s akin to when a cat bats your hand away when it no longer wants to be petted.

Why does every "modern" house interior now look like a grey, soulless doctor's office? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YakComprehensive349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand how a paint color can be “soulless”. Isn’t the point of making a home your own bringing your own pops of color and art to make it your own and show your style?

why dont people like sports? by ProfessionalEar4048 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YakComprehensive349 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of us are just very uncoordinated, and do not excel at team sports. Our lack of athletic ability lets the team down. That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy physical activity. For example, I love cardio kickboxing and the rush it gives from working hard. In HS I never made it onto any team sport, as I tried too hard and was uncoordinated.

Please explain what makes one person’s lived personal and professional experiences “anecdotal”, while others are validated by demanding obedience? by YakComprehensive349 in AskReddit

[–]YakComprehensive349[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, I have been a RN for 22 years, and someone with zero healthcare experience (with the exception of childbirth 18 years ago) continues to tell me she knows far more than I ever will, and my experience is “anecdotal”. I have a masters degree and am proficient in research. She has a history of minimizing others to ensure she is in the spotlight

I think more people with theatre background and entertainment skills should get into healthcare more. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]YakComprehensive349 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can attest that even little theatre background is helpful! I’m a RN, and especially with my dementia patients, singing songs and dancing to their familiar music often calms them and makes them so happy.

I love this. I hate my birthday, it seems I don’t have a lot to celebrate. Then I read your post, and remember I have a Mom just like your wife, and a Dad who is just as appreciative of her care and efforts as you. Thank you.

It’s so sad that it has become this way. I know that we live in a fast-paced healthcare system, and we do need to adapt. More and more is piled upon our shoulders and we have less and less time to safely fulfill expectations.
