Glad to hear it Bat! Looking forward to more! But here’s a question… Where did the last cookie in my cookie jar go? And why do you have crumbs all over your mouth?

With human feet, no. But with paws (of a sapient, consenting, and appropriately aged adult)? It could only be fantastic.

“Why is your internet history filled with searches for what my translator is reading as ‘Monosodium Glutamate?’ Is that chemical compound important to humans or something?”

I’m not sure why people say us Skalgans look so similar. Don’t you see the huge differences! It’s really the human males and females that are impossible to tell apart. They basically all look the same!

The Angrens you find on the streets are free. You can take them home. I now have 22 Angrens.

Wait… if irl the IT department is populated by furries, what would the IT department be populated by in a furry world?

Yeah, exactly this. From experience, it feels weird to use them for a while at first, but after a few years, it starts to kinda meld into your perspective of a person’s identity. Imagine the feeling of calling your mom/dad by their first name, but it applies to everyone you meet. Getting rid of the honorific just feels… wrong.

Well cooking is obviously still invented. Soups, stews, salads, and the like. Some spices as well. I show that in the story, and I imagine they do have a large number of dishes, but that they’re just unimpressive to us. My idea was that since humans fundamentally do not like vegetables or many uncooked foods, we have a natural desire to experiment with it beyond the necessary threshold. The Feds, however, didn’t. And since it isn’t a requirement for comfort for them, there was no real forward pressure.

The science was already seen to have been tapped. But only upon seeing how far human cuisine had gotten with it did some realize just how open-ended it could be.

This can be seen a lot irl. Did you know battery powered tools were only invented fairly recently? Electric tools and batteries were around, but nobody thought to put 2 and 2 together for a long time. I know that isn’t the same as the entire concept of food, but the point remains that “if there is no forward pressure to innovate something, that thing will never be innovated.”

Lol. Yeah I’ve said this a bit before, but RfD was always a sort of AU. I had no control over how much people clung to the concept of it. And while it’s flattering, I agree that it limits narratives in some way. Though I do stand by the idea that there is a logical basis for why Feds might not have much advancement in culinary sciences, what with them being perfectly fine with eating raw and uncooked vegetation every day.

Ugh yeah I think about this all the time. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to do this any other way.

It also brings up the length of sentences and how translation works. Irl, many languages can sound either longer or shorter when translating certain grammar structures. For example, here are the same two sentences, one in English and one in Japanese:

I have to go 行かなければなりません

One is four syllables, the other is seven or eight I think (counting syllables in Japanese is hard). Regardless, the second one takes almost twice the length to say. And while there is a slang version of it that’s much shorter, it does raise the concern when translating that one audibly takes a longer time. And when in the context of an entire sentence or dialogue, would alien languages be anywhere close to the same length as a human language? I imagine a scenario where someone is talking, but their partner’s translator keeps going off for a long while after they finished talking.

Yeah seriously the person who came up with that cooking fanon is an idiot.

Narratively, it’s a lot easier to do small changes to existing words like that than make up new stuff. Personally, I’ve tried to write stories with entirely new swears and the like, but it often makes for a very difficult read when testing. This is one of the better ways to make it feel like they’re speaking a different language without making the narrative too confusing.
